It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since STASH Awards founders Chris Simunek and Kyle Kushman came up with the idea for a feature article on the year’s best grow products and cleverly titled their awards the Significant Technological Achievements in Secretive Horticulture, or STASH for short.
Michael Randall asserts that the Brotherhood of Eternal Love did not die with Johnny Griggs. The point I was trying to make was that when Griggs died, the Brotherhood scattered far and wide. Perhaps it did not die, but it certainly atomized.
At the Toronto Freedom Festival-held in conjunction with the Global Marijuana March on May 4, 2008-over 20,000 stoners turned out to soak up a massive dose of cannabis vibrations. They also got soaked in a furious rainstorm that blew in late that afternoon.
Ah, springtime in South Dakota— when snow squalls roll in off the Great Plains and cover the land with a blanket of snow, which then immediately evaporates in the 75°F weather, only to be followed by piercingly windy nights with temperatures plummeting below freezing.
Being a patriot in the US is getting increasingly difficult. For example, prospective college students with drug convictions are currently denied federal financial aid— over 200,000 aspiring students have been shut out on loan applications, mostly because of misdemeanor pot possession.
On May 13, NORML founder Keith Stroup and HT associate publisher Rick Cusick were found guilty of possession last September after being arrested at the Boston Freedom Rally. An undercover cop busted the pair as they shared a joint on the Boston Commons prior to speaking.
On the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, construction began in mid-May on a community center that is being built using Hempcrete. A product of American Limetec, Hempcrete is an environmentally sustainable building material formed by combining air-lime-based binders with the chopped core of the hemp plant stem.
Remember the medical-marijuana vending machines that were being installed in Southern California? They were designed to offer patients with an authorized “marijuana ATM card” low prices, convenience and anonymity. But in April at the Herbal Nutrition Center, a popular dispensary in Los Angeles, DEA agents staged an unnecessarily violent raid in which they shattered the 10-foot storefront window, smashed 20 glass display cases inside, confiscated all of the center’s medicine and made off with the med-pot vending machine.
There’s a drug problem in the USA—and It ain’t pot! Half of all insured Americans now use prescription drugs. In fact, America leads the world in pill popping. Medco Health Solutions, which manages prescription benefits for about one in five Americans, examined prescription records from 2001 to 2007 of a representative sample of 2.5 million customers.
How does a Customs agent test out a drug dog’s sniffing ability? Plant about 5 ounces on an unsuspecting passenger. That’s what one agent did at Tokyo’s Narita Airport. To make matters worse, the dog couldn’t find the pot and the agent couldn’t remember which bag he stuck it in.
It all started as a joke that standup Doug Benson told in 2006. He proposed a documentary that would rival Morgan Spurlock’s Super Size Me, the hit film in which Spurlock dines exclusively on McDonald’s fast food for 30 days. But Benson, a veteran of the Off-Broadway hit The Marijuanalogues and a HIGH TIMES Stoner of the Year, wondered what would happen if he went a month without smoking pot—and then got baked constantly for the next month while filming the results.
At Ontario Seed Bank, based in Toronto, you can purchase Cannabis Cup-winning strains from Holland and Canada in their original packaging. OSB is known far and wide for offering the very best values in the North American seed market. Here, you can buy seeds in bulk—in 50-packs, 100-packs, even 500-packs—at astonishing savings.
As hemp becomes more widely available and public awareness of its health benefits grows, the demand for this inexpensive plant in its various edible forms—as flour, oil and seeds—is expected to increase. At the forefront of the hemp-foods trend is Denis Cicero, owner of the Galaxy Global Eatery in New York, one of the city’s most visionary restaurants.
Amy Winehouse— (We should really just stop there and let you fill in the rest.) In May, Scotland Yard arrested and detained the Grammy Award-winning singer for nine hours regarding a video that The Sun, a UK gossip rag, posted on its website showing Winehouse allegedly smoking crack.
A San Diego State University student offers a perspective from the busted campus.
San Diego State University has been thrust into the national spotlight following the largest campus drug bust in US history. In May, 75 SDSU students and 21 others were arraigned on various drug offenses, ranging from minor possession charges to cultivation, distribution and felony weapons charges.
Reefer Madness is back and worse than ever-and this time it’s being paid for by you!
Stoners in the Mist is perhaps one of the most offensive and outrageous pieces of anti-drug propaganda ever produced. Part Reefer Madness, part Birth of a Nation (the notorious 1915 film that has been condemned for its hateful and overtly racist portrayal of African-Americans), this faux-documentary is a film so prejudiced that even the White House—which commissioned the interactive video—is hesitant to promote it.
Dr. Mitch, I know there are a million different strains, but do all these types of marijuana really have different effects? Nicholas Wonder Hi Nicholas, Absolutely! Different strains carry different amounts of two key components in the plant: THC and cannabidiol (CBD).
The Canadian activist known as Neev rallies the issue.
Neev is the director of CALM (Cannabis as Living Medicine), a national peer-run organization in Toronto that provides almost 2,000 Canadians suffering from severe or chronic illnesses with safe and continuous access to medicinal cannabis in a supportive, empowering environment.
After four decades of advocating marijuana not only as a health-healing herb, but also as a spiritual sacrament, Church of the Universe founders Walter Tucker and Michael Baldasaro have lost their church and their freedom. The two men were convicted by a Canadian court in November 2007 after sharing small amounts of pot with an undercover police officer who posed as a member of their church in Hamilton, Ontario.
A recent incident in Germany, reported in the April 10 edition of The New England Journal of Medicine, tragically underscores the need to legally control cannabis via regulation and taxation rather than our current regime of failed prohibitionist policies.
Cannabis-law reformers have a bill in Congress that could end the federal prohibition of marijuana. Representative Barney Frank (D-MA), chair of the powerful House Financial Services Committee and widely considered to be a leading power in the House of Representatives, introduced HR 5843,termed the "Act to Remove Federal Penlties for Personal Use of Marijuana by Responsible Adults," on April 17.
A new documentary keeps the legacy of Hunter S. Thompson alive.
The counterculture lost a heavyweight on Feb. 20, 2005, when Hunter S. Thompson shot himself in the head while seated in front of a typewriter in the kitchen of his Aspen, CO, home, talking to his second wife on the phone. Few—if any—of his generation's writers could match his unique insight, acerbic wit and groundbreaking originality.
The newly released book Conversations with Hunter S. Thompson (University Press of Mississippi), edited by Beef Torrey and Kevin Simonson, pulls together interviews with the author between 1974 and 2003. Among them is HIGH TIMES’ classic 1977 sit-down, in which Thompson explained the origins of "Gonzo journalism" to journalist Ron Rosenbaum.
Bay Area rockers kick it up a notch with Magnificent Fiend.
On Howlin’ Rain’s Magnificent Fiend (Birdman/American), you can witness the San Francisco band liquefying everything you ever dug in your parents’ dusty old record collection—and not just the biggie stuff like Zeppelin, Hendrix, the Beatles, etc., etc., but also a lot of the one-hit-wonder-type detritus that came in one ear and soon departed out the other, like, say, Sugarloaf (or Lobo, even).
Famous for his ethereal “Far East sound,” reggae master Augustus Pablo started his career in 1969 with “Iggy Iggy” for producer Herman Chin-Loy. That tune was one of the first in Jamaica to utilize the instrument that would become Pablo’s trademark: the melodica.
On the day that Dr. Albert Hofmann, the man who discovered LSD, died—at the age of 102—The Onion asked people what they thought. “It’s just like I tell my kids,” replied one. “If you get involved with drugs, you’re going to end up dead.” And the death of this renowned Swiss chemist inspired David Letterman to share with his audience that same evening the fact that researchers have “combined LSD with birth control pills so you can take a trip without the kids.”
Of all the numerous 4/20 celebrations that go on around the country, none has become more notorious around the HIGH TIMES office than the Seedless party in San Diego. I’d always wanted to go, but had usually been too busy doing press in New York and thus forced to celebrate stoner new year with just a small group of friends.
HIGH TIMES’ resident mistress of marijuana mayhem answers all of your questions and quandaries.
Gee Mike, I wish you would've elaborated on that question. Do you mean, “in which way can I get high?” or “what utensils should I implement to get stoned?" or “how is it possible to smoke weed with no mouth?” They each mean significantly different things.
MPP holds a benefit for medical marijuana in New York.
On May 14, the Marijuana Policy Project held a star-studded benefit for medical marijuana in New York State on Manhattan’s West Side. Attendees were treated to music, food, drinks and passionate speeches in favor of providing cannabis for New York’s patients in need.
It’s a side effect of smoking marijuana that every stoner has experienced— sometimes to excess. Much maligned and misunderstood, it’s time to explore the real meaning of the munchies.
THE SCIENCE OF MUNCHIES

HAZARDS OF THE MUNCHIES
THE GREAT DEBATE: BEFORE OR AFTER
THE MUNCHIES ARE HERE TO STAY
Pot is amazing—it truly is. Not only for the mind-expanding high, euphoric head rushes, heightened sensuality, sense of serenity and countless medicinal effects it provides; puff enough of the good stuff and it can transform a tray of microwave mac-and-cheese into a five-course pasta dinner.
This is the first of a series of articles on the history of some of Canada’s finest strains. Many of these varieties have been around for decades, but the genetics have rarely made it out of their area of origin. In the past, Canadian breeders and growers have been quite secretive, tending to keep their strains within close circles of friends.
If you’ve ever wanted to grow pot under fluorescent lights but thought it was impossible, think again. Fluorescent bulbs produce much less light than high-intensity discharge (HID) bulbs, and multiple fluorescent tubes are required to successfully grow a crop of marijuana, but it can be done-with surprisingly excellent results.
In addition to the quantity of light required, the proper spectrum of light is essential. Several manufacturers offer full-spectrum fluorescents that, at 5,000°K (or degrees Kelvin), closely approximate the color temperature of daylight.

BEST “OUT OF THE BAG” PLANTING MIX: FOX FARM SOIL
This year’s simple innovation takes us back to the basics: All you need to do is fill a container with mix, plant some seeds or clones, and let nature take care of the rest The Earthbox makes life easier by eliminating over-watering altogether and reducing the chances of under-watering as well. As featured in our recent “Organics” issue (HT June ’08, pg. 56), Earthboxes use a wick system that draws water when needed from a trough located below the soil, allowing plants to absorb just the right amount of water needed. An overflow hole keeps water from over-saturating the mix. The trough measures 29" x 13.5" x 11", allowing you to use it inside, outside or both. The Earthbox is a great growing tool that turns beginner growers into expert cultivators. You can find Earthboxes at most gardening centers, or you can easily order them off the Internet. Shipping is quick and discreet (i.e., not shipped from a hydro store).
THE PROCYON 100 L.E.D.
If you’ve been following the recent series of lighting stories in HIGH TIMES, you know that the latest in lighting technology has come in the form of L.E.D. lamps. While the results vary from grower to grower, it’s becoming increasingly evident that, in time, these lamps will take over and replace conventional high-intensity discharge (HID) bulbs. The Procyon 100 is the newest in a short line of viable options for growroom lighting. Using only 100 watts, the Procyon has the biggest output thus far for L.E.D. products, replacing a 400-watt HID with close to 75% savings on electricity costs. Requiring no external ballast, the Procyon is kept cool with a single built-in fan, thereby giving off nominal heat and making it very easy to keep your grow space cool and temperate for plants. The Procyon is another two-spectrum unit, supplying gardens with the highly absorbed red and blue spectral wavelengths. There are 40 red and 16 blue diodes that combine to cover a garden plot of 10 square feet. The Procyon is manufactured in the US and will supply over 50,000 hours of illumination. (Dimensions: 13.5" x 5" x 5", approximately 7 pounds.)
$3,595; other grow cabinets starting at $1,695
For those looking to find a single ready-to-plant growbox that can hold clones and mother plants, vegetate fresh cuttings and flower plants all in the same unit, check out the new Trinity from Supercloset. This triple-charmbered and fully automated grow cabinet controls timers, feeding schedules, airflow circulation and odor filtration for an all-in-one capacity that fits into any room seamlessly and is perfect for a garage or basement. A trellis keeps plants standing, raising the lumens at plant levels. Built-in carbon filters clean the air while internal fans keep it moving, preventing mold and mildew. The 400and 600-watt lights are on yo-yo hangers, making them easy to move up and down, and the adjustable height chambers allow you to provide more space where needed. Combine that with the triple-lock system with two keys that offers both simplicity and security. The 6' x 8' x 3' Trinity comes with an instructional DVD, nutrients, numerous customization options and a three-year warranty that fully covers everything and provides free lifetime technical support. We love the Trinity, but whether you choose their Deluxe, Back2Back, Side2Side, Superflowerer or Supercube model, you’ll have an easy-to-use unit that can produce plenty of pot.
We’ve been on the verti-grow bandwagon for a few harvests now, and each time the subject comes up, the EcoSystem is a big part of the discussion. One of the easiest vertical grow systems to operate, the EcoSystem offers a relatively small footprint (48" x 48" x 66") for the growroom and is as turn-key as you’re going get with an advanced system. Employing a hydroponic grow system in an enclosed vertical cylinder, the EcoSystem uses a drip-emitter for steady feeding, with a built-in 80-gallon reservoir for easy drainage and recycling of nutrient solution. Vertical slabs of rockwool hang along the EcoSystem’s walls, encircling a tempered glass light tube that houses two air-cooled grow bulbs (either 400or 600-watt HPS) for maximum light absorption. The lamps are cooled with fitted fans, and the system has two inbuilt circulation fans for air movement inside the grow chamber. Growers will also need to properly ventilate and filter room air with this system, as the gardens grow big inside the unit. The EcoSystem has a total capacity of 200 plants (with an optimum load of 140) and comes complete with all the necessary pumps and irrigation fittings to get you growing right out of the very large box that it comes in!
You’ve seen the commercials airing late at night and wondered along with the rest of us: “Can that thing grow weed?” Well, the answer is yes—but not much. With seven holes and a maximum of under 2 feet of vertical growing space, the Aerogarden’s ideal pot-related use would be for rooting cuttings or keeping young plants in a vegetative state, but we couldn’t resist having it tested out for flowering, too. Yields weren’t high, but the fact remains: The Aerogarden can finish plants and leave you with a small but potent harvest of kind nugs (as long as you’re not expecting more than an ounce or so per cycle, even in a best-case scenario). Think of the Aerogarden as a “gateway” device: You’ll learn a lot about growing without soil in small places, but you’ll likely decide to move on to a bigger and better growing scenario once the novelty wears off. Then you can use it for what it’s intended for: growing cilantro, basil and dill on your countertop year round.
It’s always great when a new product comes along to fulfill a grower's needs properly. The innovative Cubecaps cover rockwool or alternative cubes perfectly and eliminate the need for homemade foil or paper cutouts. Airflow to the root zone is increased while at the same time algae on the medium is reduced, leading to proper growth without competition for nutrients. Reusable and available in many sizes, Cubecaps also keep your garden clean and help reduce fungus gnats and their root-eating larvae. Their reflective qualities and unique venting design, which allows oxygen to get to roots, make Cubecaps an innovation that any hydroponic grower will love. Plants thrive when air can get to roots more easily, so cover up your mediums with Cubecaps for better growth and bigger hydro harvests.
Nebula West Enterprises, the first company in a long time to hit the market with an entirely new grow technique, has gone beyond conventional hydroponics and aeroponics to the next phase of grow evolution: Fogponics. This new technique is implemented in a new propagation system— the Dominaero—origmally developed by NASA. Known as a “dry fog” clone machine, the system feeds cuttings at the root level by using a multi-head fogger in the 10-gallon reservoir to create a unique, ultrasonic dry-fog nutrientdelivery system. This new technique perfects a system that aeroponic manufacturers have sought after for years—creating a fine enough mist (in this case, straight-up fog) in order to eliminate the formation of water droplets on the roots. Large droplets cover too much surface area of the root, which inhibits the intake of the all-precious oxygen that roots thrive on. Fogponics is an excellent solution to this problem because the fogger actually breaks down the nutrient solution into small enough water particles (4 to B microns on average) that will pass into the pores of roots. Fogponics works by feeding roots water and nutrients while simultaneously allowing for maximum oxygen intake. Recent research has shown that nutrient solution converted into fog will closely track the ppm levels of the original solution when kept in a confined space. (Note: Research also shows that after so many feet of transference, the nutritive value begins to decrease—-hence, tighter spaces are better with fog.) The Dominaero contains 80 sites for cuttings held in place by neoprene collars. A small fan circulates the nutrient fog around the root zone, creating hairy, healthy roots. A pump (included) in the bottom of the reservoir allows growers the option to also feed two spinner spray heads (also included). By utilizing both fog technology and a standard pump-and-spray system (sometimes referred to as fogoponics), growers get the added security of redundancy, ensuring that your plants will receive the nutrients they need to thrive. This system will also greatly reduce water-borne pathogens and pests as well as algae growth. Needless to say, we are anxiously looking forward to many new products from the bright innovators at Fogponics. Stay tuned!
4" CAN FILTER/FAN COMBO
Ah, the old Stealth Smoking Technology Award, a.k.a. the Cheapest and Most Effective Method of Smoking Up Dorm Rooms. This nifty little package from HydroWholesale.com includes a 4-inch carbon can filter (20 inches tall) and a TD series inline fan—effective for closet-sized growroom ventilation or “air scrubbing” after smoke sessions (where the clean air is simply exhausted back into the same room). The system can be mounted on a wall or stealthily hidden in the corner of a room or under a bed. Any standard flexible 4-inch ducting will fit the fan for moving air easily out though a window. At a very affordable price, this combination may save you a lot more than just money!
The most important rule for guerrilla gardening outdoors is to pick your locations carefully. Your highest priority is to hide plants from any possible intruders. Some growers go to great lengths to hide their plots but one of the most ingenious methods we've discovered are the camouflaged Grow Buckets from Highland Greenhouse. They provide cover for your clandestine cannabis while also helping keep plants well watered, with a simple yet effective wicking system and reservoir. Some buckets even come with special straps for hanging them up in trees or on hard-to-reach cliffs. With plenty of styles and sizes to choose from, there's no reason everyone can't take advantage of that great big Halide bulb in the sky. Price: Various
$5,000, Auto-Flowerer; $3,400
For the outdoor grower in all of us, there’s a simple tool to make all of our “wildest” dreams come true. By setting your own day/night photoperiod, you can instigate flowering earlier than Mother Nature might dictate. This allows you to flower your ganja when you want and gives you the option of cultivating a variety of cannabis strains, including longer-flowering sativas. The Auto-Flowerer tent system comes in two sizes, covering small to medium-sized gardens. The original Auto-Flowerer tent measures B' x 13' and the Connoisseur Cropper is 6' x 4'. While the under-tents have translucent sides and a special transparent film on the top to allow sunlight to shine in, the tent itself provides cover from eyesight, guards against odors escaping and keeps frost out. An outer shield is then used to block out sunlight at day’s end (and early mornings) in order to start the night cycle as early as needed. The aluminum framework stands up to any severe weather conditions, and a 1,500-pound winch is included for opening and closing the outer shield.
The inventors at TrimPro truly understand the unique needs of growers who may have more than just a few plants going. Perhaps being located near fertile Canadian farming regions gives them the perspective to create the TrimPro, TrimBox, TrimPro Automatik and their great line of Jack Puck Hash Presses. Their newest prototype is the TrimPro XL, and they assert that it can safely trim up to 25 pounds per hour! Don’t believe the claims? Watch a video of the TrimPro XL in action at hightimes.com/trimpro. First the machine is top-loaded with fresh, untrimmed buds. Then the buds are released upon a grate with cutting blades beneath it that trim only the leaf away. Their unique design creates a whirlwind effect so that the buds aren’t sucked into the blades; they simply dance around until you choose to remove them. A dimmer knob adjusts the speed of the vortex to your particular liking. So if you’re the type of grower who needs several weeks and plenty of workers to finish his harvest, the TrimPro XL will pay for itself in no time at all.
Glass is the only thing you want to use for any kind of long-term storage of quality cannabis. Plastic baggies let out odor and moisture and also allow your precious nugs to get crushed, losing plenty of potency along the way. 420 Jars provide storage solutions with great pot-centric graphics and the airtight capabilities that connoisseurs expect. They’re also perfect for the difficult curing process as well - humidity levels are easily monitored and controlled and your buds will come out perfect every time. Try 420 Jars for the best in pot storage, featuring classic jars, strain-specific jars and limited edition official HIGH TIMES Cannabis Cup jars. There are many styles and sizes to choose from and lots of other cool accessories on their website.
Harvesting and drying is the most rewarding time— and yet one of the trickiest—for any grower. Odors are at their peak, and one wrong move can lead to disaster. That’s why we love The Dryer from BC Northern Lights: It allows you to regulate the drying process while controlling odors as well. With over 7.5 feet of curing space and movable racks, the Dryer also can tackle a variety of harvest sizes. The automation allows you to control a variety of factors essential for proper curing, including airflow, filtration and humidity. Get yourself the peace of mind that comes with knowing that your harvest is safe from prying eyes and noses.
BUBBLE NOW XL WASHER & AQUALAB ZIPPER BAGS
$325; large Aqualab zipper bag, $40
Growers who make their own hash quickly tire of the constant stirring and general time-wasting process of using the 5-gallon bag method. Luckily, the combo of the Bubble Now XL washing unit and large-sized Aqualab Filter Bags makes the process a lot easier—and you’ll get better hash to boot. The XL gives you the option of mixing your material on a “gentle” or “normal” cycle, depending on your preference. A built-in timer allows you to set your machine and walk away. You don’t need to worry about contaminating your hash with leaf, as the Aqualab filter bags utilize unique Velcro attachments to keep them from spilling out any of the contents during the wash. The XL also comes with a powered drain system that eliminates the task of lifting heavy bags or garbage cans: You need only drain the material into your choice of bags and dry and press the collected trichomes, and you’re well on your way to perfect slabs of bubble hash.

The best way to taste the true essence of connoisseur-quality cannabis is with a good vaporizer. The Super Vapezilla from Wicked Roots remains the pot aficionado’s choice for optimal flavor without the fuss of most other types of units. A digital readout tells you the exact temperature, and a ceramic heating element roasts your cannabis without burning it, giving you the full potency with all the benefits of not smoking. The electronic elements inside the Super Vapezilla are separated from the inhalation track to reduce any contamination of vapor flavor. Combine the flavor and potency with their lifetime warranty and you’ll never have to think about buying another vaporizer. Controlling nutrient, temperature and pH levels on a daily basis is the bane of many growers’ existence. Balancing these elements properly takes a lot of calibrating, testing and topping off that can sometimes drive a stoned gardener crazy. The new IntelliDose Controller takes care of all that painstaking labor by removing the guesswork and dosing your nutrient solution with plant foods or plain water as needed, as well as pH-up or -down depending on your particular settings. The coolest innovation of the IntelliDose, however, is the new PC-controlled unit that connects to your computer using a USB cable and allows you to view your nutrient levels, make changes to your dosages, and track uptake as well as fluctuations in pH and temperature.
FOX FARM SOIL

Kush’s average price shot up for the second straight month, and it was once again THMQ’s top submitted strain; Wallberry and Haze both had good showings but ultimately fell short. The US, Kind and Schwag indices held steady, with only minuscule changes for each; however, the Mids Index rose nearly $40 from August.
I’d like to show you how to make this amazing cannabis preparation. It’s a vegetable-glycerin-based tincture that you can make with just a few inexpensive kitchen items. I’m specifying vegetable glycerin so that you don’t confuse it with the product used to make soap, which comes from animal fats and is definitely not the same thing.
First-time grower easily yields a small personal stash using cheap countertop hydro unit.
There seems to be a lot of interest lately in the TV-advertised hydroponic system called the Aerogarden and its possible use for growing weed hydroponically. But many of the Internet discussion boards are littered with opinions from people who have no real experience in actually trying to grow weed with this unit.
