Whenever I tell someone I'm taking a trip, they usually ask me: "Is it for business or pleasure?" To be honest, I'm never quite sure how to answer. Since becoming executive editor last year, the biggest challenge I've faced by far was being put in charge of not one but three major HIGH TIMES events, each a week apart: the Miss HIGH TIMES Pageant in Negril, Jamaica; the Ganja Goddess party in Las Vegas; and the Doobie Awards in Austin, TX.
I deeply appreciate Steven Hager's historic reflections on ceremony in the April issue. His term "cultural hybrid vigor" referring to the confluence of Native American, Mexican, European and African people drumming and smoking pot over 100 years ago in Congo Square, New orleans, gave a convincing picture of the roots of the counterculture.
Canadians are still kicking ass in the stoner world. Last year they took the crown as the tokingest nation on the planet, with the most pot smokers per capita of any nation on earth. But that wasn't good enough. The province of Ontario boasted: "We can do better!" Congrats!
Gee, we thought Iranians were a bunch of nuke-loving lunatics who stoned people to death in the public square for watching MTV. We've been misled. Iranians do harbor compassion in their black hearts. The otherwise criminal and barbaric Iranian regime seems to understand that drug addicts are "people who need help."
Haven't caught a buzz in the past month? Sounds like you're dependent on marijuana. Or so the Drug Czar says. According to recently released statistics gathered by the US Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Association (SAMHSA), over one-third of Americans entered into drug-treatment programs for so-called "marijuana dependence" hadn't used cannabis in the 30 days prior to their admission.
Michael Martin, the owner of an Oakland, CA, company that produced marijuana candy, has pleaded guilty to federal charges of conspiring to manufacture and distribute marijuana. Martin was arrested last September when federal agents raided his candy factory as well as a building where the pot was growing in North Oakland.
On 4/20 in Hollywood, Cheech & Chong made a rare appearance together to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Up In Smoke. The tension that has characterized the duo's relationship In recent years seemed absent as they took questions following the sold-out screening.
British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has endorsed a move to upgrade cannabis to a "Class B" drug, which would place it on an equal footing with amphetamines. Former PM Tony Blair had downgraded pot to "Class C" status, which includes steroids and antidepressants, Regardless of how nonsensical the UK drug classifications are, PM Brown is keeping his brain as stiff as Britain's legendary upper lip.
US Drug Czar John Walters, the director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy, announced in April that the weak US dollar has reduced the amount of cocaine being seized at US borders in the Southwest. Big J also said that the price and purity of cocaine in the US have fallen.
Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty, better known for his work with the Libertines-as well as hanging out with supermodel Kate Moss and being photographed many times in a stuporwas sentenced to 14 weeks in jail for not living up to the terms of his suspended sentence from two years ago, wherein he admitted to possession of crack cocaine, heroin, ketamine and cannabis.
Vital medical-marijuana organizations pave the way.
The struggle to legalize medical marijuana isn't limited to patients, caregivers and dispensaries: Dedicated groups of activists are working to legitimize the right of patients to self-medicate, and to further research and promote the efficacy of medicinal cannabis.
SACRAMENTO, CADale Schafer, an attorney, and Marion "Mollie" Fry, a doctor, are husband and wife. They are also a prominent pair of Northern California medicalcannabis patients and providers. On March 19, they were sentenced to five years in federal prison for conspiring to grow and distribute marijuana from 1999 to 2001.
Another study proves that pot provides pain relief.
A clinical trial conducted at the University of California at Davis, and recently published online by the Journal of Pain, has demonstrated that pot can provide significant relief from neuropathic pain (which is pain caused by damage to the nerves, which stems from a variety of causes).
Dr. Mitch, Willy W. Does chocolate contain the same chemical as marijuana? Is this why it's so addictive (in the best sense of the word)? Hi Willy, Chocolate doesn't contain THC, marijuana's active ingredient, but it does contain anandamide, a fat that binds to the same receptor.
An American artist warns of hazardous imports flooding the US.
Few domestic glass-smokeware manufacturers remained in business following "Black Monday" in February '03. That was the day that the Feds launched Operation Pipe Dreams, conducting nationwide raids on the glass industry. Black Monday resulted in multiple arrests and convictions, most notably of Tommy Chong, who served a year in jail for his involvement in his family's bong-making company, Chong Glass.
'You're all on drugs!' he tells reformers. In December 2007, UN Drug Czar Antonio Maria Costa made a rare appearance before the drug-lawreform community to give the keynote address at the biannual conference of the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA) in New Orleans.
Attorney Jeff Blackburn convinces a jury of marijuana's medicinal value. In an exciting victory for medical cannabis, NORML Legal Committee member Jeff Blackburn won an acquittal for a man charged with possession of marijuana by successfully raising a medical-necessity defense, believed to be the first to be accepted in Texas courts.
HIGH TIMES TALKS TO BEN KINGSLEY ON THE SET OF THE WACKNESS
There are few things more intimidating than arriving on-set to interview the great Ben Kingsley, the Academy Award-winning actor who was even knighted by Queen Elizabeth II on his birthday in 2001ߞparticularly when you know you're going to ask him if he smokes pot.
'Heavy liquor like Hennessey and Grey Goose I can't do,' he confesses. 'I just like something that comes from the earth.' For nearly three hours, I wait for the Bronx-born hip-hop legend Pete Rock to bum-rush HIGH TIMES, knowing that the path-finding rapper/producerstuck in late-afternoon Manhattan trafficߞwill prove enlightening.
The Upsetter: The Life and Music of Lee "Scratch" Perry
Directed by Ethan Higbee and Adam Bhala Lough It's difficult to overestimate Lee Perry's contribution to music in general and reggae in particular, an idiom that he is often credited with creating. A true Jamaican original, Perry blazed a trail with innovative new audio techniques, produced hundreds of tracks for important reggae artists (including many of Bob Marley's early classics), and created a slew of foundational dub masterpieces that forever reshaped the world of sound.
PROGRESSIVE SEX WRITER SUSIE BRIGHT HAD SOME QUESTIONS FOR ME.
A. When I was 11 or 12, my older brother had somehow obtained nude photos of movie stars like Rita Hayworth and Burt Lancaster. "What are these for?" I asked him. "To give you a hard-on," he replied. And so we started selling them for 75 cents each.
Bobby braves a night in the joint to meet some rock and roll legends.
BOBBY BLACK Live free or diethose words are emblazoned on license plates all across the Granite State, and are also the unofficial motto of biker culture. For decades, motorcycles (like rock 'n' roll) have embodied the spirit of the American outlaw-of personal freedom against the forces of authority and convention.
HIGH TIMES' resident mistress of marijuana mayhem answers all of your questions and quandaries. Dear Vaporella, I just moved to Orlando, FL, from the Chicago suburbs and don't know anyone. I'm having trouble finding weed. Do you have any suggestions on finding a dank connect in a new city?
Many people who desire the medicinal effects of marijuana are unable to smoke it; instead, they must ingest their medicine. Since THC is not a water-soluble compound, butter is a good carrier substance for ingestion. Canna-butter is a butterbased mixture that's been infused with cannabinoids.
Dan Skye The propagandists' efforts to thwart the inevitable acceptance of medical marijuana have lost all credibility. As researchers continue to reveal its miracles, the medicinal value of the cannabis plant can no longer be ignored.
Bubba Kush—as well as every other Kush strain—has become the rage in the LA area. The hip-hop scene has fueled its fame, and its current popularity in Cali is as high as its price—about $75 for an eighth. However, many NoCal growers question the hype and believe that other strains can deliver comparable medical relief: White Widow and Lavender, for example.
One grower's revolutionary effort to counter the 'strain-hoarding' epidemic in the pot-producing community involves releasing his elite cutting to the public, free of any restrictions on sharing it with the world.
STRAIN REPORT: FFA
FLAVOR OF LOVE
This month I have a very special lady to share with you allߞliterally. This isn't a strain available from seed; it's clone-only, so don't go looking for it at your favorite seed-bank Web site or online grow forum.FFA is a Reservoir Seeds cross of a chunky, raunchy lady called OGKA (Abusive's OG Kush) and the famous MSS (Massachusetts Super Skunk)).
Bobby Black South by Southwest—it's the biggest independent music festival in America, flooding Austin each March with more bands and booze than most self-respecting Texas towns could bear. Of course, Austin isn't like most Texas towns—it's not only the state's capital, it's also the self-pro-claimed "live music capital of the world."
Austin is as eclectic a city as any other in the nation. Known for its deep cowboy roots and Tex-Mex heritage, modern Austin has also incorporated indie-rock, eco-hippie and politicotechie elements to craft a unique culture all its own. The people of Austin hold true to their mantra to "Keep Austin Weird" while at the same time making it one of the environmentally "greenest" cities in America.
"Am I late?' asks the voluptuous Tera Patrick as she peeks her head through the door of the "G" Suite. Yeah, I think to myself jokinglyߞ about two years late! When I'd first met Tera here in Las Vegas back in 2006 at the AVN Adult Expo, she was totally psyched at the idea of posing for HIGH TIMES. But since then, I'd found it nearly impossible to get her to commit.
BOTANY, ENGINEERING & THE INTRODUCTION OF FOGPONICS
IN THE BEGINNING
FOGPONICS VS. FOGOPONICS
It starts in places like California and New York, where big-city growing can carry high risks. Many growers in these areas figure that the reward has got to beat that risk, and that big returns need to be made before they either lose all their hair or get busted by a stroke of bad luck.
Soundproofing an indoor growroom is essential for raising successful, large-yielding crops. Running numerous large systems carries with it the need for noisy fans, filters and pumps. Smart growers have learned to couple soundproofing with waterproofing, thereby saving time, money and lots of headaches.
(Hey, you asked...) A supercharged growroom like the ones visited and photographed for this story require extreme amounts of planning, construction, and understanding of plant sciences and the environment. Fitting two full-size vertical grow systems into one room with all the equipment necessary to run them at the proper conditions is nothing short of an engineering marvel.
Sorry to disappoint the hardcore folks out there, but the winner of the 2008 Doobie Award for Best Jam-Rock Artist isn't a gnarly, boisterous rock star. In fact, the man is more of a gentle, unassuming soul, whose modest lifestyle and relaxed demeanor have him gleaming at the mere mention of being able to keep the hemp clothes donated for his three-hour photo shoot and interview for HIGH TIMES.
Unknown Blueberry strain.—Mike The strain is Mazar.—Minnesnowta My husband and I are growing our first medical marijuana using CFLs. We are going by the book Buds for Less by SeeMoreBuds. We are about a month into the grow, with three plants.

I've always found it curious that something can be so foreign, freakish or unorthodox to one person and so routine to another. On one cold clear day at the end of winter, I went about a routine I'm quite used to, although it's one that many "regular" folk may find odd: I packed up my camera gear, took the Greyhound to the country, grabbed a case of beer and a bag of candy, and headed off to photograph a bunch of high-grade smokables.
The safest way to enjoy cannabis in a public place is to make brownies. The safest way to smoke weed in a public place is with a dugout. Your videos and books kick major butt! I was wondering how long it's possible to keep a plant alive in the vegetative state if you didn't want to harvest her and wanted to keep her as a "house plant"? Of course you'd have to take clones and harvest them, but what about the mom?
Hot sun and drying winds dominate this month! We can pretty much count on every August being hotter than the last. Global warming is definitely with us, affecting both the climate and us as growers. We must plant more cannabis to slow global warming!
A decade ago, the HIGH TIMES Cultivation Department began its quest to showcase the world's best pot-growing products In the September '08 issue, the grow guys pull out all the stops to present the 10th annual S.T.A.S.H.
