Exactly one year ago, we used this page to announce that the buds were back in HIGH TIMES and asked all of our loyal readers to roll with us as we worked hard to once again make HT the best marijuana magazine in the world. Where had the buds gone? Don’t ask.
Thank you so much for the “Willie on Weed” issue (Oct. ’05). Willie Nelson is a true American hero: He stands for freedom and puts his money where his mouth is. He’s a genuine icon for cannabis smokers and hempsters worldwide. One of my most memorable moments with Willie was when he and I poured hemp oil into my Mercedes diesel and drove it across Kentucky during my race for governor in 1991.
I’m a longtime reader of HIGH TIMES, and I was thrilled to see Sour Diesel chosen as Strain of the Year. Here’s a magnified photo of my own 2-gram bud.—SDFE Here's some Strawberry Cough just before harvest. I'm actually toking that same bud right now as I write this e-mail...

Proposed UMass cultivation facility continues to challenqe the government's monopoly on clinical cannabis.
It’s been over four years since the esteemed University of Massachusetts agronomist Dr. Lyle Craker and Dr. Richard Doblin, executive director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), first contacted the Drug Enforcement Administration in hopes of acquiring a federal license to cultivate cannabis for medicinal research at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Dance-music promoters fight back after military-style invasion in Utah.
“Shut it down or I’ll take your ass to jail.” That’s how a representative from the first wave of armed, helmeted SWAT-team officers greeted the DJ earnestly working the turntables at Versus II, an all-night outdoor dance party set to draw nearly 3,000 revelers to a large stretch of private land in Utah’s scenic Spanish Fort Canyon-the head cop in charge aptly making use of an obscenity in announcing the arrival of a massive military-style raid against the rave.
Longtime readers may find it hard to believe that in almost 20 years of working with HIGH TIMES, I never once toured the Emerald Triangle (Trinity, Humboldt and Mendocino counties in Northern California), the cannabis breadbasket of the West Coast, as well as the original home of many popular strains distributed by Dutch and Canadian seed companies.
PERU'S DRUG CZAR CLAIMS COCA-COLA BUYS TONS OF COCA LEAF EVERY YEAR, WHILE THE NATION'S COCALEROS GAIN GROUND IN THEIR ONGOING BATTLE TO GROW THEIR SACRED CROP.
TRADITIONAL & MODERN USES FOR THE COCA LEAF
After more than two decades of steady opposition to US-backed coca eradication in Peru, the traditional coca growers in the Peruvian highlands (known as cocaleros) may finally see their efforts rewarded with an opportunity to Industrialize their sacred leaf for nondrug purposes—the central goal of a struggle that has transformed these impoverished native farmers into a potent political force.

I recently heard a sound that no cannabis consumer ever wants to hear—loud knocking on my front door after 9 p.m. I live in a neighborhood in Washington, DC, where my partner and I are not usually visited by others—not even Halloween trick-or-treaters.
Seven African-American police officers who were fired after failing drug tests have sued the Boston Police Department, alleging the hair test that put them in the cross-hairs was racially biased. The former police officers maintain that hair testing is intrinsically flawed because drug compounds show up more readily in dark hair than light.
"Without the zeal with which the government has enforced marijuana laws, we would not have the marijuana-based community that exists today," says Boston Freedom Rally organizer Keith Saunders. "The rally has been a continued success because of involvement of the bands, activists and enthusiasts of marijuana culture that have thrived under prohibition."
On a new DEA Web site, logic is void when it comes to alcohol prohibition.
You can ask the question a million different ways and never get a straight answer: Why is marijuana illegal while alcohol and tobacco remain legal? If alcohol prohibition failed, leading to an increasingly violent black market, isn’t the War on Drugs destined to fail for all the same reasons?
Wait, listen up for a second-quiet, you fuckers-did anybody just hear that rustling outside? Does that sound like a SWAT team scaling the side of the building? Quick, flush the stash, man-flush the STASH! What the hell are you guys waiting for????
1 CROP BLOCKER—A friend who stands between you and your herb. Example: Why do you have to be such a crop blocker every time I want to burn at a party? 2 ART GARFUNKEL—The even mellower half of Simon and Garfunkel was recently arrested near Woodstock, NY, for marijuana possession, roughly a year after suffering the same fate in nearly the same location.
Our baked macaroni and cheese features a secret ingredient. Plus, there’s some marijuana in it.
Easy Bake Dave
For many Americans, macaroni and cheese represents the height of comfort-food cuisine, a deliciously simple dish harking back to Grandma's take on the classic recipe, which in her capable hands quickly transformed itself from an appetizing afterthought into a carefully constructed homemade concoction dripping with four kinds of cheese lovingly shaved over fresh cooked pasta and then baked in the oven until melted in the middle and golden brown on top.
Are stoners still stoners 10 years later? They'd better be.
Part I: High-School Confidential I’ve been dodging everyone I went to high school with for years: changing addresses, moving every 12 months, blocking the Vaporella family phone numbers from each and every directory-phone or Web-I could find.
It's been a year now since I started writing Almost Infamous, and the question I hear most from readers is: What’s with this BBD you keep talking about? Since the BBD represents the main concept and driving force behind this column, I think it's about time to lay it all out.
With a military quagmire in the Middle East, the AIDS pandemic in Africa and environmental rollbacks at home, there's no shortage of issues to protest, yet the street fighters, marchers and monkey-wrenchers are rarely seen. Our resident grow guru tours Vansterdam for the filming of Jorge Cervantes' Ultimate Grow DVD, available now from HIGH TIMES. Here are just a few of the growrooms he toured.
NEXT GENERATION SEEDS
Flying into Vancouver, BC, for the first time in five years last July brought back many memories. Who can forget those cute little beagles at the airport whose tails start wagging whenever they detect a hint of marijuana in the air? In downtown Vancouver, I was happy to see that the "pot block” was still thriving on Lower Hastings.
A director's commentary on the making of Jorge Cervantes’ new cannabis-cultivation DVD.
Halfway through the production of Jorge Cervantes’ just-released grow-guide DVD, the entire cast and crew woke up at dawn for a glorious morning boat ride from our home base in the city of Vancouver to Vancouver Island, about 10 nautical miles across the Strait of Georgia.
British-based GW Pharmaceuticals has gotten 'liquid cannabis' approved in Canada. Is Sativex a medical-marijuana miracle or the Drug War's powerful new weapon?
In May 2005, Common Sense for Drug Policy (CSDP), a small, nonprofit drug-law reform organization based in Pennsylvania, placed a full-page advertisement in seven national magazines and newspapers. Using a plain vanilla, text-only layout that has become the CSDP trademark, the ad touted the arrival of Sativex to the Canadian pharmaceutical marketplace.
Last August, activist mom Cindy Sheehan pitched a tent outside President George W. Bush's ranch in Crawford, Texas, and refused to move until he explained to her what the ”noble cause" was that her son Casey had died for in Iraq. HIGH TIMES takes you to the opening of the peace movement's second front.
THE BEST LITTLE WAR HOUSE IN TEXAS
FLOWERS IN THE DUSTBIN
OVER THE RAINBOW
As Pot Star and I leave the urban sprawl of greater Waco and turn down the two-lane highway that leads to Crawford, I finally get a glimpse of the Texas that Davy Crockett took a dozen or so bullets for—green prairies bisected by the occasional stream, dotted with farmhouses and heavy machinery.
In Part 1 (Nov. '05), retired overgrow.com mentor Vaaran introduced his 3' × 5' × 7' growroom and the initial steps he took to achieve a more efficient space. Here he concludes his two-part series focusing on mold prevention and harvesting techniques to maximize pot production and potency. Special care must be taken during the last stages of the crucial flowering period to ensure that your buds are potent and bountiful come harvesttime
ADDITIONAL VENTILATION IN MID-TO LATE FLOWERING
HARVESTING, DRYING AND CURING
The risk of bud rot or mold (botrytis) greatly increases during the later stages of flowering. There's nothing worse than losing a crop to these nasty spores so late in the game. The denser your buds become, the greater their chances of contracting mold.
Often mistaken for a pH fluctuation or a nutrient deficiency, the mineral buildup of calcium and magnesium known as hard water can be a deceptive and devastating marijuana malady. Sometimes, it’s not what you eat but what you drink that makes you sick.
By far the worst pest infestation in ganja gardens, spider mites are difficult to eliminate and will eventually kill plants if allowed to thrive. More active in warmer climates, they suck sap from the undersides of leaves, leaving tiny white spots.
Welcome to the first installment of our new monthly section devoted to our bud brothers (and sisters) in the North, the cannabis cultivators of Canada. Here, master breeder Chimera waxes philosophic about some particularly pungent pot.
Imagine a washing machine that provides you with chunks of powerful hash instead of losing all your socks. Mila, of the Pollinator Company in Holland, has made this dream a reality with the Bubbleator, the newest creation from the inventor of the famed Pollinator and Ice-O-Lator hash-extraction devices. Simply plug in the unit and fill with water and ice. Once it reaches the proper temperature, add up to 500 grams of trimmed cannabis leaves. The Bubbleator does the rest, churning any grower’s waste products into the most potent hash available in just 10 minutes. Pour the stirred contents through pyramid-shaped screen bags into your collection bucket: The THC crystals separate from the plant material for drying and pressing. Lightweight and inconspicuous, the Bubbleator easily extracts hash in a flash.
Knowing the true weight of your precious pot requires using a scale, but owning one can mean increased penalties in a worstcase scenario. The CD Scale from American Weigh hides in plain sight among stacks of innocent-looking compact discs. Only you know which one of your jewel cases doubles as a precision weighing instrument. Choose from five different music styles or insert your own sleeve. The scale measures up to 500 grams, uses triple-A batteries and comes with a 10-year warranty. Use your clutter to your advantage, or hide it among well-kept shelves—either way, your scale is camouflaged and just might bring music to your ears.
Inhaling THC vapor-the healthier alternative to smoking-can be an extremely tasty and satisfying experience depending on the vaporizer you choose. The SIlver Surfer improves upon existing "whip"-system technology with a ceramic heating element and a unique air-intake system. Fresh air is drawn into the unit past the heating element and straight through the ground-up herb. Glass-on-glass technology keeps the psychoactive vapor fresh and pure. The Pyrex glass temperature-control knob can be set on high to deliver a satisfying bong-like hit, or on low to sip and savor the flavor of a Sweet Skunk or Haze.
Light Relay Systems
Running more than one or two grow lights at a time can create a whole new set of hassles. Commercial cannabis growers are constantly searching for ways to conceal their electrical indiscretions. The new Light Relay Systems from Progressive Growth is designed to “flip-flop” power from a single ballast between two alternating bulbs in separate growrooms. This allows the ballasts to run continuously, eliminating any power spikes at tum-on time (no small consideration for those with nosy utility readers). In addition to the lack of a surge, the redirected power will allow two growrooms to be run on opposing 12-hour-on/12-hour-off schedules, set by the heavy-duty timer attached. But be careful: Using heavy-duty electrical equipment requires wiring expertise and a proper respect for high-voltage power. Properly and professionally installed, these ballast flippers will save power and money-and just might save your ass.
I don’t get the concept of germination. How do you sprout seeds? Rybz Dear Rybz, Growing is simple and easy, as long as you keep it that way. Get your hands dirty and don’t get discouraged when you make mistakes or even kill plants.
Warm outdoor air before introducing it into the growroom. Cold air blowing directly on plants will cause them to grow slowly. If fresh cold air must be used, make sure it doesn’t blow directly on plants. The threat of pests and diseases is always lurking in growrooms, even in the dead of winter.
Our annual Hydro Report highlights new products and techniques for aqua-farmers to succeed without soil. Dan Skye visits a grower who gets huge yields using General Hydroponics’ AeroFlo 60, widely regarded as one of the best units on the market.
