"I honestly thought pot was going to be legalized. That we were only a few years away.” Robert Platshorn, America's longest-serving marijuana prisoner, has not known freedom for 25 years. During a phone interview from his home in a federal detention center, Platshorn recalled the high hopes he held for drug-law reform prior to getting busted for cannabis smuggling in 1979.

At the 2nd Annual WAMMFest in Santa Cruz, CA, over Labor Day weekend, attendees paid big bucks to dunk WAMM founders Mike and Valerie Corral in a pool of water, carnival style. The price climbed higher and higher, perhaps because of the fright masks the Corrals were wearing—Mike strapped on a plastic Condoleezza Rice face, and Valerie donned a dorky George W. Bush replica.

Want another reason to resent the federal government? How about this: Your hard-earned tax dollars are being spent on ditchweed, and you don’t even get to smoke it. Not that you’d want to anyway, but that’s not the point. According to statistics just released by the Drug Enforcement Administration (now there's a name you can trust), in 2003 the agency s Domestic Cannabis Eradication/Suppression Program destroyed 247 million marijuana plants—which sounds like an impressive "victory" in the War on Drugs, until you read a bit more closely and dis cover that 243 million (around 99 percent) of those plants were actually feral hemp.

DAVID BIENENSTOCK
When he wasn’t mainlining cocaine, supersleuth Sherlock Holmes was known to collect a day's worth of dottle from his famous pipe and leave it to dry on the mantelpiece above the fireplace in his cozy bachelor pad. The next morning, he'd start the day off right by packing up a nice breakfast bowl from the leftover plugs of tobacco, which were now darker and stronger than anything fresh—much like a "generation” joint rolled from the roaches of other joints.

If Bob Dylan didn't exist, someone would've invented him. Truth is, he did just fine inventing himself. As we learn in Chronicles: Volume One (Simon & Schuster), his first in a series of memoirs, Dylan "acquired...dreams or thoughts” from Robert Johnson, Woody Guthrie, Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill and, like an alchemist, created an entirely new musical language that torpedoed popular song convention out of the water.

Is it dangerous to order seeds? Don't order seeds from the same address as your garden. If customs finds your seeds, they'll likely just confiscate them. When ordering from the US, should seeds be shipped to a PO box? A PO box is fine, particularly if you can get one using fake ID. Otherwise, the address of a sympathetic non-growing friend is a good bet.

THE COLISEUM
$670
For a couple of years now, I've heard that the Coliseum garden is an ultra-efficient way to grow. I needed to see for myself how the Coliseum offers maximum productivity while using several times less power and space than an equivalent flat garden. Efficiency comes from the vertically hanging light(s); use a light ladder ($69) to hang the lights with no reflector. Every lumen of light is intensely directed at the plants. The Coliseum consists of interlocking modules measuring 60.5 inches tall by 66 inches wide. Two modules face each other to form the Coliseum circle. Each module has five rows with 15 holes. Space plants as you like (plugs are provided for the empty spaces). An additional module can be stacked onto each to create the 81-inch-tall Coliseum. The Coliseum can be operated aeroponically (without media) or as a drip system. A popular growing medium is 70% perlite to 30% Vermiculite, peat or coco fiber. The one-story Coliseum sells for $670; complete two-story systems are $1,300. BetterGrow.com, 877-640-4769.

OMEGA GARDEN
$4,000
In the 2002 Hydro Report, I declared the Omega Garden the most innovative hydro system. Back then, it was merely a plastic unit which, though it worked, was no engineering masterpiece. Now full grown into an all-steel design, it's built to last a long time. You can buy the Omega Garden in two versions, the basic or the deluxe. Both units feature identical operation, but the basic unit requires you to add your own lights, timers and exhaust fan. Omega Gardens hold up to 300 three-inch rockwool cubes as the medium; think "sea of green" to maximize yields with cannabis. I suggest running between 150 and 175. Plants must finish at no more than 16 inches from tip to tray. This means vegging is not necessary (though it's still possible for a short period, to establish the root structure in the new cube). Take advantage of Omega's friendly and knowledgeable sales staff. A complete system retails for $6,000, the basic system for $4,000. OmegaGarden.com, 866-962-3278.

EZ HYDRO KIT
$149
In the 6th Annual Hydro Report, the EZ Hydro Kit got a mention for Best Budget Hydro Kit. I've decided to bring it back due to several product additions and enhancements. Every EZ Hydro Kit comes complete and ready to grow, with medium, nutrients, step-by-step grower’s guide and grow light. It’s a true bargain for the beginner, and they offer great prices on a variety of light choices, from dual-spectrum fluorescents to HIDs. This homespun business provides friendly, toll-free customer service. Complete kits (including light) start at $149. EzHydrokit.com, 866-394-9376.

WCG EBB & FLOW TRAYS/STURDY-BUILT BENCHES
$350
The Sturdy-Built Benches are made with all-steel construction to safely support flood-table trays in all sizes. They're assembled with nuts and bolts versus self-tapping screws, which ensures that the user can assemble and reassemble the framework hundreds of times. Each bench is mounted on wheels so that it can be moved from room to room without disturbing the plants. All the benches are powder-coated and come with a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. Available sizes are 2 x 4 ft, 3 x 3 ft, 4 x 4 ft, 4 x 6 ft and 4 x 8 ft. Prices range from $169 to $315. Complete ebb & flow kits, including flood tray, 30-gallon reservoir with cover, fill and drain hardware, hoses, locking castors, framework and fastening hardware, start at $350. X-TREME EBB & FLOW TRAYS
$185
This revolutionary ebb & flow tray allows for optimal drainage and prevents water from pooling. The drain channels are a half-inch deeper at the central drain area than at the outer edges of the tray, allowing water to flow away completely between flood cycles while the table surface remains level to support plants. The distinctive Xshaped criss-cross grooves on the tray bottom also provide multiple paths for water to drain away from or around mature plants with fully developed roots. Reinforced sides provide added tray strength to support the varying weights of flood and drain intervals throughout the complete growth cycle. It's unbreakable and easy to clean, and retails for $185. Optimum-hydroponix.com, 800-489-2215; US distributor: tradewindsgarden.com.

HARVEST MASTER
$895
Climate control is the biggest factor relating to the success of any indoor growroom. Providing optimal temperature, humidity and CO2 control won't guarantee a successful grow, but it will maximize every ounce of effort invested in your whole project. My experience with the Harvest Master intelligent growroom controller was flawless. It ran my AC, CO2, lights, fans and dehumidifier, allowing me to set temperature, humidity and CO2 levels simply and precisely—I even took advantage of nighttime differentials for temperature and humidity. The growroom controller features eight inputs and outputs for anything from door sensors to low-water gauges. You can even dial your cell phone using an optional GSM modem. There are three models (basic, $895; with CO2 and sensor, $1,595; Pro Plus, $1,995) with increasing levels of functionality. Each one is capable of smartening your growroom and controlling all your environmental devices like fans, CO2 controller, air conditioner, heater, humidifier and more (up to 16 devices). WestCoastGrowers.com, 888-924-4769.

PLUG 'N' GROW
$939
The latest growroom controller to hit the market is Intelligent Growing Systems' Plug 'n' Grow GS-220. This microprocessor-based controller consists of two boxes linked by an Ethernet cable up to 50 feet long. The control box contains sensors for CO2 (0-5,000 ppm), relative humidity, temperature and a day/night light sensor. It’s ventilated by an internal fan that continuously samples new air for precise measurements and faster system response. The output box houses two individually controlled 120 Vac, 15A outputs to plug in your CO2 controller and air conditioner. Different day and night points can be set and used to save energy, implement negative differential techniques (strategic temperature shifts that induce specific plant responses) or for air exchange. More than 60 operating modes provide for a wide range of adaptation to control methods. The GS-220's internal programming adapts its behavior to any growroom and any type of climate-control equipment. The control algorithm strives to reach the smallest climate differential for each piece of equipment controlled, while preventing repetitive and possibly damaging switching of equipment. Other features include up to five different voice calls and one pager dial, a threeday internal clock charge, an altitude-correction factor and a calibration feature for all the integrated sensors. As an added bonus, the manufacturer offers a sevenday-a-week, toll-free support line. The staff is well versed in climate control and garden automation. Plug 'n' Grow costs $939. igrowing.com, 888-577-6274.

PHAT FILTERS
$180
Manufactured from Australian-mined R-412 carbon, the Phat Filters are smaller, lighter and longerlasting than filters using pellet-sized carbon. Also, the high-porosity carbon and low-weight aluminum make them easier to handle. The largest filter is 48 inches tall and weighs little more than 20 pounds. You’ll notice that the holes in the filter are much larger than in regular filters; less restriction means that more air goes through the carbon. The filters work whether the fan is pulling or pushing air through them. Use the sock pre-filter to keep the carbon contaminant-free. This unique carbon is tightly packed and sealed into a high-efficiency airflow cylinder. A vortex cone in the base and a custom-pore surface produce maximum transference. Filters are rated and range from 275 cfm to 2,500 cfm, and prices range from $180 to $492. Take advantage of the low introductory price. Purchase with Elicient fans for even better savings. TRIFLEX NUTRIENTS
Since these will be the only source of nutrition for your plants, the nutrients you choose—and ultimately how you apply them—will have the greatest effect on overall smokability and potency (second only to the plants' actual genetic traits). In the last two years, two companies have led the way in research and development of plant nutrition: Advanced Nutrients and Botanicare Plant Products from American Agritech. Both are on the cutting edge of indoor horticulture, with outstanding product lines that include organic, synthetic and bio-synthetic blends. One-, twoand three-part nutrient systems fill personal preference niches. Complex recipe charts available from both companies instruct you how to further enhance their products' performance with supplemental amendments. From beneficial fungi and microbes to guano teas and emulsions from the sea, Advanced Nutrients and American Agritech's Botanicare Plant Products are at the top of the home-gardening nutrition industry. RUSH BIOSTIMULANT NUTRIENT ENHANCERS
If you're not using a growth enhancer, you're not getting the most out of your plants. It's important to note that none of these products can turn sick plants into healthy ones; they increase metabolism in healthy plants. The most effective growth enhancers are RUSH Biostimulant Nutrient Enhancers. They're available in three formulas for grow, bloom and rooting, and in premixed quart sprayers for ultra-effective foliar feeding. The active ingredient, glycine betain, is a cytokinin (plant hormone) derived from a special strain of cold-water seaweed. Cytokinins are chemical compounds that stimulate growth and increase resistance to stress. Plants grow larger while requiring less nutrients. Rambridge.com, 800-265-4769.

ADVANCED NUTRIENTS
Life is all about enzymes. Spike your plants' diet with living food. Advanced Nutrients manufactures products with the highest-quality standards, assuring positive results with virtually any growing method. Barricade (potassium silicate), Dr. Hornsby's Piranha (beneficial fungi), Tarantula (beneficial bacteria) and Voodoo Juice (microbial rhizosphere colonizer), Grandma Enggy's Sensational Seaweed Extract, Cold Brewed Fish Stew, Extra Pure Humic Acid, Golden Honey Fulvic Acid, Mother Earth Super Tea Grow and Bloom, Overdrive and Sensi Zym are my favorites from their line of 100% organic additives. AdvancedNutrients.com, 800-640-9605.

I didn't ask Scott Weiland if he's been getting high lately. Maybe you would have, but I didn't. The question was on my list, down at the bottom, but when the time came, it felt rude, not to mention predictable. So predictable, in fact, that Weiland declared a moratorium on interviews this past May, a vow broken two months later, when he sat down with HIGH TIMES.

Typically, breeders seek more odor, not less. Most want a pungent, flavorful smoke, but a roomful of smelly, blooming plants is a definite security concern. The best course of action is to use an ozone generator to control the smell with a closed exhaust system.

Coco Cubes
$12.95
Coco fiber, or coir, has emerged as and renewable alternative to rockwool and peat moss as a growing medium. Environmentally friendly and safe to handle wet or dry, coir is perfect for growers "itching” to try organic hydroponics. Manufactured from woven coconut husk fibers, coir breaks down naturally over a period of three years, so you don’t have the disposal worries that you do with rockwool. Coir is sold in many forms, including seed discs, cubes, bags and mats. The CoirBrick contains 12 cubes that expand when water is added; the CoirBlock is perfect for the gardener who needs more. Prices: Coco Cubes (in photo), 12-pack, $12.95; CoirBrick (20 oz), $2.95 plus shipping; CoirBlock (2.5 cu. ft), $14.95 plus shipping. DIGITAL ELECTRONIC BALLAST
$310
The digital revolution has brought huge advances in ballast technology. Digital ballasts reduce heat, noise and amps used (the 600-watt model uses only 5.5 amps). The frequency generated by digital circuits is clearer than the frequency produced by magnetic coils used in analog ballasts. That makes for less amp spiking during start-up and allows for more bulbs per circuit breaker. The ballasts can accommodate either high-pressure sodium or metal-halide lamps and are the only ones we’ve seen with a built-in fan to assist cooling. Prices: 400-watt, $310 plus shipping; 600-watt, $350 plus shipping. Contact: West Coast Growers, 888-924-4769; westcoastgrowers.com.
Midwest Hydroponics
SM-90
$19.99
SM-90 can be used on the roots, stems and leaves of a plant throughout its life cycle to treat all manner of diseases and pests. Use it as a foliar spray during vegetative and early flowering growth to kill aphids, whiteflies, thrips and even the dreaded spider mite. Continue to apply 2 to3 ml per gallon of SM-90 to the nutrient solution in your reservoir for the remainder of flowering to discourage root problems and diseases. Biodegradable and nontoxic to humans or animals, this comprehensive cure-all should be in the arsenal of any grower concerned with healthy roots and pest-free buds. Prices: 4 liters, $59.99 plus shipping; 1 liter, $19.99 plus shipping. Contact: Hydro Wholesale, 866-803-2100; hydrowholesale.com.
