As we celebrate HIGH TIMES' 30th anniversary, changes are in the wind. After six issues of Grow America, we will return to publishing the HIGH TIMES you've asked for—a HIGH TIMES chock-full of marijuana stories, grow tips, beautiful photos and stoner-lifestyle coverage.
I’m just a scum prisoner who's totally against the evil, un-American War on Drugs. I believe the War on Drugs could be ended very quickly by telling Americans exactly what it really costs and by comparing it directly to alcohol prohibition and its creation of crime.
Pro Bowl running back spurns pro football, recounts beating drug tests and begins a new life of freedom. By David Bienenstock
"I didn’t quit football because I failed a drug test,” former Miami Dolphins tailback Ricky Williams told the Miami Herald in August. "I failed a drug test because I was ready to quit football.” Williams, 27, was a superstar in the NFL, leading the league in 2002 with 1,853 yards rushing.
Israeli soldiers will get post-stress relief via a little THC.
During the Cold War, Americans were warned that pot was a Communist plot designed to instill a narcotic pacifism in US citizens, effectively sapping our will to defend the country. The Israeli Army, however, is taking another look at cannabis.
HIGH TIMES RATES THE STANDARDS OF SMOKING SECURITY:
It’s back-to-school time, and for many college students, that means a return to the dorm. Ah, the cramped, stinky, cell-like, wonderful dorm: It's a special place to live during a very special time in your life, and, as every coed knows, every floor in every dorm has a special room, usually down at the end of the hall...
The 13th annual Hempfest was almost a washout By Steve Bloom
Rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of thousands of marijuana supporters who descended on Seattle for the annual Hempfest on Aug. 21 and 22. Though precipitation followed the 4:20 celebration on the first day and delayed the start of the second, the show went on.
Vermont jammers are joined by 70,000 fans at festival finale. By David Bienenstock
Just days after announcing the impending end of Phish in a posting on phish.com, guitarist Trey Anastasio revealed to PBS's Charlie Rose a recognizable split within the fanbase: Phishheads over 30 tended to understand the decision, and those under 30 tended not to.

Kimora Lee Simmons, 29, model, designer and wife of hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, was arrested outside the couple's Saddle River, NJ, home after allegedly driving her Mercedes SL-600 erratically, then ignoring a police car with flashing lights for nearly two miles.
Lenny Kravitz recently told Gloria magazine (in Croatia, of course) that he once spent the night smoking marijuana at Mick Jagger's pad after the two rockers shared a bill together. He even saved the roach as a souvenir—for about a year, anyway.
The US Department of Health and Human Services admits that sometimes it’s "tough to tell" if your friend is using marijuana. Among the five warning signs included in their Tips for Teens: "Acting silly for no apparent reason." So remember, vigilant Americans: If someone seems suspiciously silly, alert the DEA and Department of Homeland Security immediately.—DB
"Freedom of the press belongs to those who own one," Forçade declared upon founding HIGH TIMES in 1974. “We own one, and that's an important point.” (Read more about Forçade on page 34.) Sound it out: John Kerry is a douchebag but I'm voting for him anyway —it's funny because it's true!
Have you ever heard some stone-faced politician admit that, yes, maybe, perhaps at some time in the hazy past, he "experimented” with marijuana—a turn of phrase that brings to mind Bunsen burners more than bowls and blunts? Bill Clinton copped to such a scholarly interest in the demon weed (though, famously, he didn't inhale), as did nearly all of the major Democratic nominees for president in 2004, and presumably George W. Bush himself—who, of course, admits to nothing.
If you can noodle-dance your way through a 35-minute version of “Dark Star,” you can certainly make your way into a voting booth and pull a lever. That's the theory behind Headcount (headcount.org), a nonprofit, nonpartisan, volunteer organization that sprung up from the jam-band world.
Following up on a tip supplied by Russell Putnam, HIGH TIMES' head investigative reporter, we assigned one of our specially trained undercover operatives to infiltrate the federal government's classified marijuana plantation (housed at an undisclosed location in rural Virginia).
Raman Selvam Renganathan, 39, was sentenced to death and hanged in Singapore after being convicted of storing 2.7 kilos (approximately six pounds) of marijuana in his apartment. Singapore has some of the harshest penalties in the world for drug crimes, including over 250 executions for drug trafficking since 1991 —which is one reason why we host the Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam instead.
Want to put the "action" back in activism, save the rain forest and get laid while you’re doing it? It’s all in a day’s work for the eco-porn collective Fuck for Forest. Hailing from Norway, FFF is a youth-based environmental-conservation group with one distinct advantage over the Sierra Club, Greenpeace and the rest—instead of bake sales and silent auctions, they raise funds via hard-core porn and public intercourse.
Eddy Lepp vows to fight on following a DEA raid on his massive medical-marijuana garden in California. By Dan Vinkovetsky
It took agents from the DEA two days to cut down the estimated 32,500 plants that were growing on the grounds of Eddy's Medicinal Gardens and Multi-Denomination Chapel of Cannabis and Rastafari in Upper Lake, CA. The massive medical-marijuana garden, considered the largest such operation in the US, had been featured twice in HIGH TIMES (Jan.
Your extreme case of cottonmouth is making me less attracted to you. I invited you here in the hopes that we could get to know each other a little better—perhaps take our schoolyard crush to another level. I wanted to fool around. I wanted to get your juices flowing.
PISCES (Feb. 23 - March 20): You’ll figure out the meaning of life after taking a huge rip off a friend’s bong. Then you'll have the song "Hits from the Bong” stuck in your head and forget it all. ARIES (March 21 - April 20): Pot does not count as a vegetable.
On the 30th anniversary of HIGH TIMES, it’s an occasion for me to think about Thomas King Forçade, an old friend and visionary who founded HIGH TIMES. A marijuana smuggler and a swashbuckling outlaw who loved living on the edge, Tom also had a serious political agenda.
For years, John Masterson has been the silent backbone of the marijuana movement in Montana. A quiet man by nature, Masterson has dedicated the last decade to marijuana-law reform in the sparsely populated state. His years of hard work are starting pay off as Montanans gear up to vote on 1-148, the state’s medical-marijuana initiative, in November.
Are we there yet? No, not as far as Woody Harrelson's concerned. Inspired by Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters' classic cross-country trek toward higher consciousness, Ron Mann's documentary Go Further follows actor/activist Harrelson and his cronies on a 2001 bus and bike tour from Seattle to Los Angeles.
The conscious rapper opens the book an his recent trip to Iraq, Israel and the West Bank.

Tomorrow we leave Amman, Jordan, and fly into Baghdad. Everyone we’ve met here has extended love, food, welcoming and a generous gratitude for our presence. There’s a kindness that exists here that doesn’t come close to anything I’ve experienced in America.
THE BUDS ARE GREENER AND BIGGER AT THE ANNUAL MARDIGRASS FESTIVAL IN NIMBIN. AUSTRALIA.
It's a gorgeous, clear sunny day in the mountain protest village of Nimbin in the subtropical northeast pocket of New South Wales, Australia. I'm crossing the main street with Andrew Kavasilas, one of the organizers of MardiGrass, on our way from his Oasis Café to the Hemp Embassy.
Brisbane is the closest airport to Nimbin. From Brisbane, you can take a three-hour bus ride to Nimbin with Queensland Scenic Tours on Tuesdays and Sundays (A$55), or fly with Regional Express to Lismore and jump on a Marshes bus for the last 20 miles to Nimbin.
In Australia, as in the US, cannabis laws vary from state to state.
Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Possession of up to 25 grams or five plants carries a fine of A $100 (US $71) but is not a criminal offense. Northern Territory Possession of up to 50 grams or two plants carries a fine of A $100 but is not a criminal offense.
The modem era of marijuana cultivation and breeding has produced a plethora of cannabis strains. Like a fine wine, a strain of marijuana is a story in and of itself. Here are 10 of them. Haze has been my favorite variety since 1983, when Neville, founder of the Seed Bank, gave me a big branch for my trip back to Amsterdam from the Cannabis Castle.

Prehistoric pot smokers probably just threw their bud into the fire and took big whiffs. But somewhere along the timeline, clever cavemen figured out a better way to conserve their stash. They ventured out into the wilds, found a long piece of wood, hollowed out a bowl on one end, and bored a hole through its length to create a stem in order to keep the flame away from their faces.
1 Cultivate verified genetics whenever possible. This is the single biggest factor pertaining to quality besides the grower himself (or herself). 2 Breeding is a crapshoot requiring lots of time and space. Everyone shouldn’t breed; there are way too many copied strains anyway.
In 1999, a HIGH TIMES survey designated Easy Rider the No. 1 drug movie of all time. Up in Smoke placed fourth; it’s the greatest stoner movie of all time. A stoner movie is a comedy, such as Up in Smoke. The stoner movie could also be called the stoner buddy movie.
Your plants are swelling and bursting with flavor. It's time to chop them down. Follow this simple guide and you'll have quality buds for months to come.
WHEN TO HARVEST
HOW TO HARVEST
TOOLS OF THE HARVEST TRADE
THE ART OF CURING
STORING CURED BUDS
Harvest time can be scary for many reasons: Odor is at an all-time high, more visitors than ever are around to help with trimming, and low-life rip-off artists lurk in the shadows. Paranoia and giddy anticipation can lead to poor decisions if you're not careful.
The Kottonmouth Kings fire it up with a new weed-drenched album.
As the Sun sets on a painted Louisiana sky, I make my way to the Howling Wolf—the New Orleans club where the Kottonmouth Kings are playing tonight—with a tray containing 50 ganja crawfish pies. Their road manager, Yanni, leads me through the band’s crowded tour bus, past a dozen green-curtained sleeping bunks to the state-room in back where the band is casually sprawled, getting stoned as expected.
High Five questions for KMK founder Brad (Daddy) X.
What’s up with Pakelika, the Visual Assassin? What’s his purpose in the band? He actually just won the heavy-weight pot-smoking championship of the world. He has the championship belt, which he wears at our concerts. If people want to come up and take pictures with him with the belt, he'd be honored.
I have one male and one female plant that have been flowering for three weeks and two females that have been flowering for one week. The first female is showing small flower clusters with white pistils. I’ve started using an organic blooming tea, which seems to be working well; they've slowed down after the white pistils.
Be ready to harvest at any time. Watch the weather and yank plants before a freeze or big rain, even if it's a little premature. Most varieties in most climates should be harvested in October. Watch for thieves and harvest if you think your crop is in danger.
The Other day, I looked at a house for rent. The landlord showed me around the home and yard, then to the back door of the two-car garage. He opened the door, revealing a garden of about 100 plants just into flowering. That's life in Northern California.

BC NORTHERN LIGHTS DRYER
Drying machines are great for people who really need to control odors or who live in humid climates where mold could be a problem. This sturdy metal unit from BC Northern Lights boasts seven and a half square feet of drying surface; it can easily dry several pounds in just a few days. The carbon filter and fan are concealed inside the unit, making it discreet and quiet, and the whole unit uses less than two amps. BIG RED SHREDDER
This trimmer is specifically intended for the commercial grower. After some practice, the Big Red Shredder from Kind Seed Co. can remove fan leaves and protruding leaves much quicker than several people using scissors. Attach any standard shop-vac (not included) and simply rub the branches over the metal tube housing a rotating drill. The leaves are trimmed and sucked away for use in making hash or cannabutter. PIECEMAKER HASH PRESS
The hash press from Piecemaker is made of West German food-grade stainless steel; it’s the strongest compact hand-cranked press I’ve ever used. It includes three different designs you can imprint onto your hash coin. Non-growers who use resin boxes can convert their precious trichomes into hash. When hash is pressed, glands burst, releasing flavors and terpenoids that combine for an extra-tasty smoke. This press can handle lce-O-lator as well as Pollinator trichomes, and some even use it to press their buds for transport. Price: $220, plus shipping. Contact: Green Harvest, 604-880-2829; greenharvest.com.
ICE-O-LATOR WATER HASH EXTRACTION BAGS
The original water-hash extraction bags from the Dutch cannabis goddess Mila are a great way to get the most out of your harvest. Along with your leaf trim (no twigs), you’ll need ice, water, a kitchen mixer and a bucket corresponding to the size of the bags. You know this hashish is pure when it bubbles near flame. Prices: 5 gal.: 2 bags, $120; 3 bags, $180; 20 gal.: 2 bags, $160; 3 bags, $240; plus shipping. Contact: Green Harvest, 604-880-2829, greenharvest.ca.
Back in the fall of ’98 fellow HT writer Chris Simunek and I sat in the King Cole bar in the lobby of the St. Regis Hotel searching for courage and composure in the bottoms of beermugs. We were waiting to be called up to the suite of Black Sabbath to do the interview we’d both dreamed of doing since we were 12 years old.
Former Dallas Cowboy Mark Stepnoski on drug testing in the NFL
In July, All-Pro running back Ricky Williams stunned the sports world when he suddenly retired from the Miami Dolphins after five seasons with the NFL. The Heisman Trophy winner led the league in rushing in 2002, and was well on his way to the Pro Football Hall of Fame when he tested positive for marijuana for the second time in May and was hit with a $650,000 fine.
Real readers talk about being 'cannabis criminals'.
DEAD LUCKY IN VEGAS
My story takes place in 1992, when I traveled to Las Vegas for a three-day run of Dead shows. I’d been a fan all through college after being turned on by an old pot connection, but this was my first time seeing them live. After a full program of smoking pot, dropping acid, drinking beers, and watching the Dead and Sting in the 120-degree heat, my crew was ready for some bright lights and AC. To the Strip we went.
When I heard that an old high-school buddy of mine named Steve Hager had become editor in chief of HIGH TIMES, I called him in New York and asked if he would be interested in an article about cooking with ganja. "Great Idea," he said, so I made up the name of a dish, Rasta Pasta, and christened myself Chef RA. My column took off like a jet.
The readers have spoken, the vote is in and the buds are back! Due to overwhelming popular demand, the next issue of Grow America will be... HIGH TIMES. That’s right! HIGH TIMES returns in all its greentinted glory, stuffed with stoner news, music, politics, grow info and buds.
