Ten years ago, a grower named Kyle Kushman knocked on our door with the most fabulous Purple Kush strain we'd ever seen. A gentleman farmer in upstate New York, Kyle wanted to share his beautiful bounty with High Times readers. His first article, “Getting Started with organics," appeared in the December 1994 issue.

PAUL ARMENTANO
Three years ago, Dr. Geoffrey Guy, founder and CEO of Britain's GW Pharmaceuticals, predicted that his company's product—a cannabis spray for medical patients—would be on the market by 2003. He was this close. At the time, GW had already cultivated some 40,000 marijuana plants in a state-of-the-art greenhouse in southern England, isolated and cloned various strains for human clinical testing, and commenced Phase III trials examining cannabinoids' ability to treat symptoms of multiple sclerosis and certain types of chronic pain.

I decided to ask a few medicinal users what they thought of Bedrocan (this page) and SIMM 18 (right), the two varieties the Dutch government now offers patients who suffer from the following ailments and illnesses: pain and muscle cramps or spasms associated with MS or spinal cord damage; nausea, decreased appetite, weight loss, and loss of muscle strength associated with cancer or HIV/AIDS; long-term general pain caused by problems in the nervous system; and Tourette’s syndrome (tics and sudden movements or remarks that one can't stop on a conscious basis).

Omega Garden
[no value]
$5,400
Last year’s winner in the Best Indoor Cultivation Kit category, the rotating Omega Garden maximizes every physical factor relating to cultivating plants indoors—energy, time, and space. It provides 50 square feet of growing space, yet takes up only 20 square feet of floor space. On top of that, every plant has an identical “best seat" in the garden with unobstructed direct light; not a lumen is wasted, as the lamps cast a 360-degree footprint within the wheel. "Everything in orbit around the central light" is how Omega Garden describes its product. The company also coined the term orbitropism to describe a technology that fully exploits the natural effects of geotropism {the growth of a plant in response to the force of gravity). One rotation of the Omega Garden takes about an hour. Gravity and growth hormones are constantly redistributed in a spiral pattern (envision a barber pole) rather than stacking right on top of each other. The rotation creates plants that are compact, stocky, and extremely symmetrical. Fully loaded, the Omega Garden can hold more than 300 plants, but it’s best to limit the number to 175. Fill with coco-cubes and grow organically. It can produce five pounds of buds, using only 2,000 watts of light. The Omega Garden comes pre-wired with appliance safety certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and a two-hour video. Contact: Omega Garden, (877) 962-3278; omegagarden.com. Complete system, $5,400; minus lights, ballasts, cooling fans, and timers, introductory offer, $3,395.

LR Series
$136
Finally, someone’s built a better reflector. Bell Lighting’s LR series provides a symmetrical light footprint without hot spots. Incorrect configurations on most reflectors reflect large amounts of light directly back into the bulb rather than to the ground. Bell Lighting has calculated the precise distance and angles for the most effective reflection of light to the ground. The lights in the LR series are exceptional examples of design and function. Made from the highest-quality ISO marine aluminum, the fixtures are lightweight and 100% rustproof and reflect more heat than they absorb, resulting in cooler operating temperatures and longer bulb life. A proprietary powder coating makes these reflectors 100% UVand IRresistant, anti-bacterial, and corrosionand acid-proof. Weighing a mere 5.2 pounds, LR Series reflectors can be purchased with or without bulb and ballast. A secure-fitting glass lens is included, along with custom duct flanges. Contacts: Bell Lighting Technologies, (888) 422-5462, belllighting.com. LR400 $136; vented, $152; LR 1000, $148; vented, $170. West Coast Growers, (888) 924-4769, westcoastgrowers.com.

The third-generation EZ-Clones are custom-designed to be the simplest, most efficient cloning machines on the market. The heart of every EZ-Clone is the atomizing mister, now further improved to bathe the entire root zone in a highly oxygenated rooting solution. Each model (30, 60,120) comes complete with reusable neoprene collars, a high flow-rate irrigation system, and drain valves with shutoffs for water changes. In one to two weeks, cuttings grow extensive root structures (100% success rates are common). Every feature of this design is perfect, starting with the deep lid, which is leakproof and allows for placement on a surface without damaging the cuttings. Contact: EZ-Clone, (866) 392-5663, ez-clone.com.; EZ-Clone 30-plant, $279.95; 60-plant, $349.95; 120-plant, $399.95.

MountainAir Carbon Filters
$259.95
Carbon filters are the simplest and most effective way to hide your grow. MountainAir carbon filters won the "Charcoal Filter” category in 2001 for their unique chemistry and ideal pore structure. The inner construction of the filter prevents compacting and the collection of smaller carbon molecules in the carbon bed. Initially, MountainAir carbon fitters were sold with the promise that they would last up to two years. Testing revealed that after 37 months under maximum airflow, the carbon was only 72% used and the filter was still 100% effective. Purchase an in-line fan and some flexible ducting, then direct the odorless exhaust anywhere, even within the building. Filters work in either direction, so use them pre-exhaust and post-exhaust for both ultra protection and peace of mind. Contacts: Indoor Tech, indoor-tech.com. There are 14 different MountainAir carbon filters, from 6-in. neck x 20-in. tall for $259.95, to 14-in. neckx 56-in. tall for $649.95. Midwest Hydroponics, (888) 449-2739, midwesthydroponics.com.

SolarMax
$99.95
The new SolarMax high-output horticultural lamps are like sunshine in a box. They’re designed specifically for indoor horticultural applications to produce the highest level of usable light. SolarMax boasts a lumen rating of 147,000 with its 1,000-watt HPS super-bulb. The manufacturer calls its product "lamps tuned for plants." ISO-certified, SolarMax features a reduced lamp size to fit any reflector style and the only metal halide to high-pressure sodium bulbs (600and 1,000-watt) that convert with no wattage drop. Contacts: Rambridge, (800) 265-4679, rambridge.com. Lamp prices range from $99.95 to $134.95. Midwest Hydroponics, (888) 449-2739, midwesthydroponics.com.

Tek Light T5 High-Output Fluorescent Lighting Fixture
$224.95
Higher yields begin with improved lighting for seedlings and clones. The Tek Light T5 promotes thicker plants with shorter internodes. It’s not cheap, but this fixture is made to grow. The eight-lamp model produces 40,000 lumens without heat build-up, more than most 400-watt metal halides. Its slim profile, reflective aluminum inserts, easy use, convection vents on all sides, and adjustable cable hanging system are added attractions. The T5 line includes 3,000°K bulbs with light spectrums suitable for flowering. Harvest buds without worrying about heat, noise, or electricity, thanks to Tek Light’s cool, quiet operation. Contacts: Sunlight Supply, sunlightsupply.com. Prices: 2-bulb Tek Light, $224.95; 4-bulb, $299.95; 6-bulb, $399.95; 8-bulb, $499.95. Alternative Garden Supply, (800) 444-2837, altgarden.com.
Omega Garden
Sunburst Digital Ballast
$260
Going digital is the biggest advance in ballast technology since they were invented. Typical core-and-coil ballasts are heavy, noisy, and produce lots of heat, causing HIDs to flutter and fluctuate in brightness and color. The far more efficient Sunburst digital ballasts operate on a high frequency that more easily excites the internal gases of HID lamps, creating additional light while using less power. The electronics also keep lamps burning at optimal temperatures, offering the double benefit of producing a consistently higher level of usable light white virtually eliminating unnecessary lumen degradation due to burning at inconsistent temperatures. Test data also shows that a 600-watt digital ballast produces within 5% the amount of usable light that a 1,000-watt core-and-coil ballast does, and yields almost 50% more light than a 600-watt core-and-coit. Minimizing lumen degradation over successive crops means that plants receive full-intensity light and yields remain high; it also extends the lamp's life. Also, Sunburst digital ballasts are so light that five can fit in a backpack. Contact: Nutrilife, ( 877) 533-9572, NutrilifeProducts.com; 600-watt HPS, $260; 400-watt switchable, $190; 1,000-watt with dimmer, $275.

Plant Pro
$999.95
There’s too much at stake when growing to leave anything to chance. Solatel’s Plant Pro controller has sensors that measure temperature, humidity, and CO2 levels while coordinating time settings for lighting, irrigation, ventilation, and CO2-dispensing. Setup is simple: Plug the sensors into matching jacks on the unit’s side, and appliances into the labeled receptacles (pump, fan, and CO2). Monitor the levels of the attached sensors on the display. To program Plant Pro, use the selector knob to choose an appliance, then the setting knob to dial in chosen parameters. Plants will grow faster and larger when the garden’s environment is just right. Contacts: Solatel, solatel.com; Alternative Garden Supply, (800) 444-2837, altgarden.com. Plant Pro with CO2sensor, $999.95; without CO2sensor, $622.95.

A member of the Bloods, B-Real was hit by a Crip spraying machine gun fire in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Southgate near Cypress Street, where B-Real was born. Hit in the left side of his back, B-Real collapsed and wound up in a hospital with a punctured lung and internal bleeding.

Many a debate has been had over whether legalization of marijuana would affect the profits of those who make so much on it now. Many growers/smugglers/dealers actually want the herb to stay illegal, as it has provided them with a very prosperous lifestyle.

1 Is it organic? This might not be important for some, but for this connoisseur, it's the number one factor. Not only do organic buds taste and smell better then "chemmy" buds but the high and the comedown are also much nicer. If your dealer doesn't know the difference, maybe it's time to grow your own.

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) might have been first used by Dr. Albert Hofmann way back in 1943, but it was having one hell of a heyday with me and my friends in the summer of 1972. While the establishment refers to the resident evil by its abbreviated label, LSD, anyone in the know that summer just called our colorful little friend "acid.”

Pruning is essential to maximizing yields, especially indoors. There's risk involved; haphazardly removing parts from a plant can stifle growth, lower yields, and delay harvest. Some people may wonder what it's like to be a big "star" in the cannabis world, but I don’t—I know what it’s like. I was a fresh-faced 18year-old kid when I started working at High Times in 1995. I’d been accepted to Sarah Lawrence College, but soon realized that my parents' beat-up station wagon wouldn't fit in too well with the limousines and Bentleys that filled the school's valet parking lot on Parents’ Day, so I ditched college, moved into a New York City YMCA, and went to work as an editorial assistant at my favorite magazine.
