As we prepared for the 3rd Annual Doobie Awards, we could only watch in anger and awe at the events transpiring in California throughout September. On September 5, Valerie and Mike Corral were busted for growing a popular medical-marijuana garden in Santa Cruz.
The cover is the best HIGH TIMES has ever done. You need to do a full pictorial using this model. RickB Via Internet I faithfully buy your magazine each month and refer to it as my “Bible.” I love the November cover. A beautiful woman who smokes marijuana should be recognized along with all the other women who are members of the counterculture world.
In a July 1997 raid, police officers and federal agents raided a Bel Air, CA mansion and discovered 4,000 marijuana plants. Todd McCormick and Peter McWilliams, who were overseeing the operation, contended their actions were legal under Proposition 215, the measure approved by California voters in 1996 allowing patients to smoke marijuana with a doctor’s recommendation.
Herer stumps for North Carolina activist Jean Marlov
MILL SPRING, NC—On Wednesday, September 18, Jack Herer was in the hospital in Los Angeles. The next morning he signed out, against medical advice, and flew to North Carolina. He wound up in the emergency room in Asheville that night, suffering severe stomach pains.
BOSTON—Pot-leaf leis, pizza, and the smoke from burning shish kebabs. Missouri NORML head Dan Viets denouncing Attorney General Ashcroft while a bluegrass band warmed up onstage behind him. Youths hunched over on the hillside, intently packing glass bowls, tattooed rockers in baggy shorts and black Psychopathic Records T-shirts, ravers in voluminous street-sweeper jeans.
How did you begin your mission as a songwriter and singer? As long as I can remember, I liked writing. It was something that was always part of me. Jim Henson had a lot to do with framing the way I thought, my imagination. I watched a lot of The Muppet Show and Sesame Street.
The capacity crowd at this year’s Doobie Awards was hardly prepared for High on Fire’s metal assault. Led by sludge-guitar demigod Matt Pike, the trio of musical barbarians was ready to attack, taking the stage with a wall of Green Matamp amplifiers (Pike’s trademark) stacked higher than the band’s heads.
As the jam/jazz/funk/rock/fusion phenomenon continues to unfurl, the Jazz Devil has been deluged with countless CDs boasting hybrid party sounds, downhome band improvisations, and fleet-fingered instrumental wizardry. Some of these groups uphold deep-groove traditions, while others indulge in more free-form sound experiments.
Everyone lucky enough to attend the inaugural Bonnaroo Music Festival last June went home with two lists in their head: the best bands they got to see and the ones that got away. With live music nearly 20 hours a day—often on four stages simultaneously—two ears just weren’t enough to take it all in.
Newly launched Website everyonedoesit.com may sound a little boastful when they declare themselves “the world’s best online head shop and cannabis resource,” but with legendary exsmuggler and cannabis promoter Howard Marks as the founder, who can argue?
Remember when you saw Silence of the Lambs for the first time? I do. I spent the entire movie caught somewhere between being terrified out of my mind and completely riveted by Anthony Hopkins’ performance as the man-eating Hannibal Lecter.
Christmas is deeply rooted in the American psyche, a holiday that conjures up rich memories throughout the lives of those who celebrate it. I remember the joy and excitement of Christmas morning, not being able to sleep in anticipation of the toys and treats a mystical character called Santa Claus would bring.
SANTA CRUZ, CA—The DEA got more than they bargained for when they raided the Wo/Men’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana garden outside Santa Cruz, CA on Sept. 5. Twelve days later, the mayor of Santa Cruz and other city officials joined WAMM director Valerie Corral and her husband as they distributed medical marijuana to 13 patients at City Hall.
SAN FRANCISCO—About 35,000 people nationwide have obtained physicians’ recommendations to use cannabis, with the vast majority in California, according to a survey by California NORML. The survey, taken in May 2002, queried patients’ groups, medical-marijuana dispensaries, buyers’ clubs, registration programs, and physicians in eight of the nine states that have legalized medical marijuana.
WINNIPEG, MB—A special Canadian Senate committee appointed to study the nation’s pot laws unanimously concluded that marijuana should be legal. In a 600-page report released to the public on September 4, the panel recommended that pot and hashish be sold in much the same way alcohol and cigarettes are sold—by licensed vendors to people over the age of 16; that the criminal records of some 300,000 to 600,000 Canadians convicted of simple possession of marijuana should be erased; and that medical marijuana should become immediately accessible to those who need it.
Years after the fall of Communism in the Czech Republic, Jiri X. Dolezal is faced again with censorship. As a Prague reporter who has developed a niche writing about pot, he’s a self-proclaimed “walking advertisement for marijuana.” Now his chosen subject matter could land him in jail.
Threats to close coffeeshops fizzle as government collapses.
AMSTERDAM—When the conservative Christian Democratic Party came to power in the Netherlands in July, smokers from Amsterdam to Alaska choked in mid-toke. After decades of government-tolerated pot sales, the new regime was threatening to close down the coffeeshops.
A study suggests that brain cannabinoids aid recovery from painful experiences.
Silja J.A. Talvi
Underutilization of cannabinoids in the brain may explain why some people have difficulty moving on from painful experiences and later begin to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorders, anxieties, phobias, and other severe mental illnesses, says a study published in the August 2002 Nature, a leading scientific journal.
Following the success of California’s Proposition 215 in 1996, many activists and policy organizations have focused on the state initiative process as their primary method for implementing druglaw reform. For the most part, this strategy has been effective.
HOLLAND, MA—When David Bunn puts on his Uncle Sam hat and takes the stage to emcee at the Boston Freedom Rally, he brings a long history to the mic. A member of Mass CANN’s board for the last two years, Bunn, 48, grew up outside Hartford, CT. “I got politically aware pretty fast,” he says.

LOS ANGELES—Authorities at Sequoia National Park report a 600% increase in the amount of marijuana grown in the park this year, attributing it to tighter security at the US-Mexico border after last year’s terrorist attacks. “The level of cultivation is far greater than anything we’ve ever seen before,” spokeswoman Kris Fister said.
As I write this, the trial of Ira Einhorn for the murder of his girlfriend, Holly Maddux, is scheduled to begin. I have no doubt that he did it, but whatever the verdict, here are several facts, most of which will not be revealed in the courtroom.
On the morning of September 11, 2001, I received a phone call, raced to the TV, and tuned in to the incredible image of the Twin Towers on fire. It took me a while to realize that the 2nd Annual HIGH TIMES Doobie Awards for Conscious Music—scheduled for the next day-would be canceled.
Reggae superstar Beenie Man pontificates about pot.
Beenie Man is always on. Having released his first album at the age of 10, his performance instincts are so strong that the whole world is his stage. This afternoon’s portion of his world is a Times Square hotel room, where he’s holding court at a photo shoot the day before taking part in Brooklyn’s West Indian Day parade festivities.
Around 1992, Keith, his wife, Patti Hansen, and their two daughters, Theodora and Alexandra, moved into the large house Keith had custombuilt—and put in Patti’s name—on an estate in the wealthy, bucolic suburb of Westin, CT, one and a half hours north of New York.
I jumped out of the minivan into the buttery Caribbean heat. The rural air was sweet but unbelievably heavy, while the sky was thickening. The seasonal showers of late August can roll through at any time, sometimes accompanied by lurid lightning strikes.

After making my way to the United States from Batdambang, Cambodia many years ago, I made a close friend in the mountains of Northern California. He showed me some very fine strains of the local cannabis, all with a high resin concentration and perfect for making oils and Thai sticks.

TICKETS TO THE CANNABIS CUP
The Republic of Bongland is the maker of the Hurricane. Each pipe and all its components are handmade by ROB artisans at the company’s facility in Germany. Each is crafted from 700 grams of borosilicate glass, chosen for its nearunbreakable strength. I saw the designers play soccer with one on a tiled floor in Switzerland. Actually, dropping it on the ground is part of the sales demonstration. Painful to watch, but it drives home the point that you and your Hurricane will have a long life together. The Hurricane uses a unique patented cyclone effect, produced by three tiny holes, one on each bubble of the tube. The vortex created acts as a centrifugal filter system to reduce harmful impurities. Centrifugal force pushes heavy tar toward the outside of the vortex, so more of it gets deposited on the inside of the glass and less goes in your lungs. Lighter elements such as THC are situated in the center of the vortex, so they’re inhaled. The swirling tornado also has an intense cooling effect, as the smoke travels many times the distance of the tube. The ash catcher also filters out crap, to keep both your lungs and the pipe clean. All this lends itself to a tastier, more healthful smoke. Every detail of the Hurricane is both ergonomic and functional. There are no gaskets or grommets; every fitting is sandblasted like laboratory-grade equipment. Just slide male and female parts together, and they’re airtight. The female stem has a safety feature built in: a crumple zone with limited movement. If the whole four-piece combo takes a heavy hit, the stem will break. This piece is inexpensive to replace. Amazingly, thanks to the frontally located carburetor and the rotating, angled ash catcher, you can even smoke the Hurricane lying down. The Republic of Bongland coat of arms on the pipe is a permanent emblem. It is actually sandblasted onto the pipe and ash catcher, using coloredglass powders. There are several Hurricane models, starting at $375. For more information, go to funtazia.com or republic-of-bongland.com. To order, call (516) 520-0090.
MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON KIF BOX
Just a few years ago, I had never heard of trichomes. Now everyone I know uses the ancient technique of dry-sieving to accumulate resin glands, also called trichomes or kif, for special smoking occasions. There’s no better way to top off a bowl of fresh headies. Reasonably priced and handcrafted with love, you won’t find a better-quality box anywhere. I’d also like to mention their company motto, “Forever Family, Forever Grateful.” The 6" x 9" box pictured sells for $95 and comes in a variety of hardwoods. They also offer premium 6" x 6” unlidded boxes for $50. You can purchase lidded and lockable boxes that incorporate beautiful hardware and fine hardwoods. Check out their whole line of handmade goods at mountainsofthemoon.com. For orders, call (877) 875-0689.
Ever wish you could speed up the trichome-collection process? Now you can with the handheld Pollinator from Amsterdam. The Shaker Pollinator sells for around $15, depending on the current exchange rate. There are several different models, and some are even motorized. WATERFARM HYDRO KIT
TheWaterFarm has been around almost as long as hydroponics itself. Manufactured in the US by General Hydroponics, it has consistently been a top seller, probably because of its simple and compact design, as well as an unbeatable price. The WaterFarm comes complete, including pump, Grorox, and GH's Flora series liquid nutrients. All you do is add the plant, plug it in, then maintain the 2-gallon reservoir. The WaterFarm is actually two buckets. The planter sits inside another bucket but leaves space at the bottom, which acts as the reservoir. So to check or maintain solution, all you do is lift the planter up and set it to the side. You can connect as many as six WaterFarms to an optional 8-gallon reservoir, via a controller unit purchased separately. The WaterFarm can accommodate plants up to 6' tall, which is helpful if you’d rather grow a few large plants than run afoul of plant-number thresholds. Each unit sells for only $50. To order, call (800) 444-2837.For more info, go to generalhydroponics.com
HASHISH AND THE CANNABIBLE
Do you know cannabiphiles who never stop talking about the great buds and hash they’ve smoked? These are great books, as entertaining as they are educational. Let the experience of these professionals lift any veil of misinformation on the subjects of cannabis and hashish. Jason King, the author of The Cannabible, traces the origin of some favorite strains, introducing over 250 varietals from around the world that anyone would surely aspire to acquire. Robert Connell Clarke’s book Hashish travels back in time, documenting the ancient, original techniques of making and using hashish, all the way up to the present-day hashish industry. Get The Cannabible by visiting cannabible.com. The paperback sells for $25, while the hardcover is only $10 more. I saw one prominently displayed in a front window of a bookstore in San Francisco. More likely, you’ll have to do an on-line search. Hashish sells for $29.95 from redeyepress.com.
QUICKIE SELF-CONTAINED GROWING CHAMBER
It’s only been four months since the 4th Hydro Report and there’s already a new winner on the block. QuickGrow Systems are back (“All-In-One Mini-Systems," June ’02 HT) with their highly acclaimed Quickie self-contained growing chamber. Roughly the size of a 40" TV, this system is ingenious, inconspicuous, and built from quality components. It comes fully assembled and ships in one carton. The Quickie combines all the elements of a professional, productive garden in one unique three-chamber design. It’s made to be a true perpetual garden, with room for simultaneous propagation, vegetation, and flowering. Lighting consists of a 400-watt high-pressure sodium lamp in the flowering chamber, situated above six 5" pots. This light is air-cooled with its own exhaust, allowing heat from the light to be removed immediately. The vegetative chamber houses four 2' fluorescents to nurture a mother plant and young clones. There’s even a partitioned reservoir for automatic feeding of a separate nutrient solution to each chamber. The central control panel makes it simple: Set the fully digital timers to control lights, pumps, fans, and even the optional C02 enrichment. Fill the reservoir, and the Quickie handles it all. Thanks to a snugly fitting front cover, instead of hinged doors, this grow chamber is 100% lightand odorproof. Expertly positioned intake and exhaust fans deliver an even airflow to the entire crop while also keeping the chamber cool. The coco-carbon filter on the back of the box efficiently eliminates all odor particles from the air before it’s exhausted. The unit itself is mounted on sturdy rolling casters, so it’s easy to move. You can put it anywhere in your home. All the electrical components within the unit are Canadian Standards Association (CSA) approved, so you know they’re safe to operate in the home. The Quickie unit draws only 6 amps total, not enough to cause a spike in your electric bill, and operates everything from a single grounded outlet. Complete ready-to-run units sell for $1,599. For the whole scoop, visit quickgrow.ca, or call (604) 788-4769.
What could be better than growing your own smoke? Making your own hashish, and from material that at one time would have been thrown away. Even if you don’t grow, you’ll probably be surprised how much donated material will come your way once friends find out you have BubbleBags. A bag full of leaf, trimmings, or low-quality buds, along with a bucket of ice water and a hand mixer are all you need to make your own bubble hash. It’s given this name because its high concentration of trichomes and low level of other contaminants make it bubble when heat is applied, rather than burning like traditional hashish. They have a great Website, bubblebag.com, with full instructions on how to extract the essential resins from a variety of plants. Their top-of-theline six-bag kits come in three sizes. The 1-gallon kits are $110, the 5-gallon (the most popular kit size) are $220, and the 20-gallon kits cost $460.

In nature, pests are an unavoidable gardening nuisance. There are a host of cannabis-attacking critters of all kinds, including worms, beetles, insects, and arachnids, not to mention mammals, both two-legged and four-legged. Total eradication is impossible.
Spider mites are small arachnids that colonize plant foliage, feeding on the plant juices they suck from the undersides of the leaves. They grow to ½-lmm long, and can be red, brown, green, or yellow. There are two species of spider mite that commonly attack the cannabis plant: the two-spotted spider mite, tetranychus urticae, and the carmine spider mite, tetranychus cinnabarinus.

Days are growing longer, and growers in southern climates can start planting seeds to move outdoors on the first of March. In fact, now is the time to plan for an early outdoor crop. Swiss growers start clones and seedlings under lights and grow in greenhouses in early winter.
Long before civilization cracked down on the pleasures of pot, cave people were wandering the Earth sampling all the herbs they could find. Surely, they came upon cannabis and discovered a myriad of uses for it. Unfortunately, no one has verified this—until now!
