Just as the counterculture has its own rules, celebrities, and mood-enhancers, so does it have its own holidays. Several years ago stoners across the globe unanimously declared April 20, or 4/20, the Stoner New Year. Think about it: tokers managed to turn Adolf Hitler’s potentially bummer-inducing birthday into the biggest pot party of the year.
Columbia College in Chicago. Anything goes. I’ve gotten stoned with security guards, sold grass to dorm cops, and received bags from cops who’ve confiscated it from gangbangers. I’ve smoked weed at the entrance on a daily basis. Eight thousand students; two drug arrests last year, and those happened because they were fighting and happened to have weed on them.
While DEA chief Asa Hutchinson sounds the alarm that amphetamines are the new drug menace, another branch of the government has been feeding speed to its most valued employees: the US Air Force. When fatigue strikes on long missions, a Navy air-warfare manual entitled “Performance Maintenance During Continuous Flight Operations” recommends 10-milligram doses of dextroamphetamine (Dexedrine), with 5 mg more every two to four hours as needed, up to 30 mg.
SEATTLE-As usual, the 11th Annual Seattle Hempfest was a smoking success, with nearly 200,000 peaceful protesters showing up over the two-day event. “Pot Pride” was the theme this year, emanating from every corner of beautiful Myrtle Edwards Park on the Seattle waterfront.
A forest fire that burned out of control for almost two weeks and devastated over 50,000 acres near San Diego was caused by a helicopter looking for pot farms, a California Department of Forestry investigation has concluded. “A California National Guard helicopter was in the area looking for drugs and clipped a power line, which caused a spark, which started the fire,” says Martie Perkins, fire information officer for the department.
Eight great strains battle for the top prize. By Dan Skye
In November’s election, the people of Nevada will decide whether the legal penalties for responsible marijuana use should be eliminated. But some voters are jumping the gunlike those at the 1st Annual Vegas Cup. Last August, judges paid a $100 fee to sample and judge eight strains of pot, five from California and three from Las Vegas.
New York rapper Style gets high, high, high' on his weed single, "Good Time." The Breeders’ Deal sisters—Kim and Kelley—have revived their alt-rock act
Ripped off for pot last night in Atlanta, Kim Deal is plenty pissed. Tonight, at the Howlin’ Wolf in New Orleans, she redirects that anger into an old-school Breeders show that has the fans moshing for mercy. Now, postgig, she wants to nail the suckers.
After years of intermittent availability on poorly remastered CDs, the six albums released during the last nine years of Peter Tosh’s life have finally been granted definitive reissues. With a generous helping of bonus unreleased tracks, rare 12-inch mixes and dubs, plus new liner note essays, these reissues shed new light on Tosh’s solo work.
The late-’70s “rockers” era was the golden age of reggae, when soul-music sweetness merged with Book-of-Revelations political apocalypse in houseof-ganja-mist sounds. Augustus Pablo’s just-reissued East of the River Nile (Shanachie) is one of the classics of the genre.
The potential therapeutic value of hallucinogenic drugs was noted by the founder of the American Neurological Association, who sampled peyote in 1896 and experienced “a certain sense of the things about me as having a more positive existence than usual.”
Bill Hicks was the greatest stand-up comic of his generation. In the confessional and bombastic tradition of Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor, Hicks told it like it was and ruffled many feathers. The story of this comic genius could easily be written as a tragedy.

More than 10 years since Senator Henry Hyde (R-IL) began working to reform the nation’s out-of-control forfeiture laws, the Feds have hardly slowed down in their quest to seize the assets of those who cannot afford to defend them. Among the thousands currently caught in the forfeiture web are a Union, KY couple who have lost their business, are in the process of losing their home and property, and face serious state felony charges over 41 small pot plants on a first-time bust.
MONTREAL—In some of the biggest and strangest trials in Canadian history, 35 bosses from the world’s most violent Hells Angels chapter are charged with 134 murders and running a $650 million-a-year drug-trafficking empire. The cases follow an eight-year biker war in which Quebec Hells Angels battled independent drug dealers and a Bandidos prospect chapter for control of the French-speaking province’s lucrative coke, pot, hash, and Ecstasy markets and transshipment routes to the US. The war left over 160 dead, two prison guards assassinated, Quebec’s top crime reporter shot five times in the back, and hits planned on judges and prosecutors.
TORONTO-Metro Toronto police raided the Toronto Compassion Centre August 13, battering down the door and entering with weapons drawn. Four people were arrested: club founder Warren Hitzig, club supervisor Zach Naftolin, and volunteer receptionists Andrea Horning and Markus Koutoukis.
Legal buds in the backyard of blackjack? With Question 9, Nevada’s historic initiative to legalize marijuana, running neck and neck in the polls, the state’s largest police association pulled an embarrassing flip-flop on the measure last August.
How did this initiative first come into existence? Nevada emerged as a place where both voter sentiment and the mechanics of getting something on the ballot looked promising. We talked to a lot of Nevada voters and found a strong sense that people in that state are Independent-minded and want a common-sense approach to the laws.
WAGNER, SD—Charging that children as young as 5 were kept confined to their classrooms while a drug dog sniffed them, the American Civil Liberties Union has filed a civil-rights lawsuit against local school, police, and Bureau of Indian Affairs officials on behalf of 19 Native American children.
Nearly one year after a New York Times headline pronounced: “After Two-Decade Halt, Marijuana Research Is Set,” the wheels of change continue to grind exceedingly slowly in the US. Despite calls by the National Academy of Sciences, the American Medical Association, and others, a new report by the Congressional Research Service admits that “the number of clinical investigators involved in federally supported studies of the drug’s therapeutic potential is quite small.”

Along with sex, drugs, and rock’n’roll, there was a spiritual revolution at the core of the 1960s counterculture. However, in a new book, Turn Off Your Mind, Gary Lachman (who, as Gary Valentine, was a founding member of the group Blondie) writes, “There was a shadow side to all the love and peace that supposedly characterized the decade.
Curing and storing your sacred medicine is as important as getting your crop growing correctly. It’s amazing the number of people out there growing cannabis who don’t know how to cure their weed. If done correctly, your harvest can last a year or more and still taste superb.

To understand growing in Switzerland, you must first understand its geography, which has isolated nationals for centuries. It is mainly mountainous, and the people reside in the valleys and pride themselves on being self-sufficient and politically autonomous.
All over the country, growers planted a lot more this year than last year. Marijuana is everywhere—balconies, closets, spare rooms, patios, fields, and backyard gardens. Walk down any street in any city in the country, and keep an eye upward.
Until the late ’80s, the tokers of Australia had to rely on imported and outdoor herb. Imports came mainly from Southeast Asia, our immediate neighbors to the north. Outdoor weed in New South Wales came from the fertile rolling hills of Nimbin; elsewhere, from larger outdoor crops further afield.
Ganja grows in abundance in Jamaica, but like any plant, it grows in some places better than others. Westmoreland, where the tourist mecca Negril is situated, produces some of the best ganja to be found on the island. Gone are the days of the legendary Lambsbread, but many tasty new varieties have since emerged.
Southern Africa has four main ganja-producing countries: Malawi, Swaziland, Lesotho, and South Africa. Zambia, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe have also been known to produce some excellent weed, but not on the scale of the other four. Malawian growers are renowned for producing Malawi Gold, some of the finest natural herb on the planet.

Historically, The Emerald Triangle, so named for the large number of marijuana growers in the area, comprises California’s Mendocino, Humboldt, and Trinity counties. One can draw a triangle from Upperlake north to Eureka, east to Redding, and then back to Upperlake that would encompass Northern Cali’s “green belt.”
A perennial thorn in the side of US Drug War zealots, British Columbia developed renown as the supplier of the ubiquitous B.C. Bud to both the US and Canada. For years B.C. kind flowed almost unchecked across the world’s longest unguarded border.
We reviewed the Big Red Shredder back in the June '01 HT. Almost two years later, the variety of power trimmers on the market has grown like a sativa stalk in the Jamaican sunshine. They all work on the same principle: An electrically powered motor turns the blade, while the attached shop vac sucks the trimmings into the canister-where they can be removed for processing into oil or water hash. These machines are quick, ripping through entire harvests in hours rather than days. The Big Red Shredder sells for $1,150 and is available from kindseed.com, or call (604) 408-1198.
Who would argue that this invention rivals that of sliced bread? Nobody likes trimming; everyone wishes it could get done faster. You’ll come to love the steady “chick, chick, chick” sound of the motorized blade. Don’t fear that leafy buds will be the trade for automation; a top-notch manicure is easy to achieve. You should never rush the drying and curing of your valuable flowers. But what about a cabinet built to maintain perfect temperature and humidity? A closed system means your harvest isn’t affected by rainy or humid weather, while your flowers are also kept completely free of floating contaminants. The Eco Drying Cabinet does not subject the flowers to excessive heat but draws moisture from them like a dehydrator. Specifications for the cabinet suggest that by removing 1-2 gallons of water per day it can dry up to 16 pounds in 24 hours. Each drying cabinet is handmade of chrome steel by M. Bucher in Germany. He builds several styles and sizes. The model pictured measures 66" x 24" x 18" and sells for just under $5,000. For inquiries, go to spectraweb.ch/m.bucher.

Sweetleaf Metal Herb-Grinder
Every time I smoke a bowl of herb that hasn’t been properly ground I feel cheated. Without it the bowl never burns right, only the first hit tastes good, and you don’t get as high, due to the need for excessive flamage. A Sweetleaf grinder makes it easy to produce the perfect texture for bowls, bongs, or joints. These aluminum grinders are nearly indestructible. They’re maintenance-free, if you always load the smaller half. There are two models; the pocket size is $25 and the party size $30. Both include free shipping. Go to sweetleafgrinders.com, or call (416) 497-9897,
Experienced growers are now relying on the trichome rather than the pistil when it comes to judging peak ripeness, ensuring that you get every precious milligram of THC you grew before it begins to degrade. Look for gland heads that are fat like a mushroom head. Peak ripeness occurs just as heads start turning from clear to amber. We found several suitable models. The Celestron Monocular sells for around $60, and the Tasco 30x illuminated magnifier can be had for around $20 at Radio Shack. These magnifiers/telescopes fit right in your pocket, so you can take them anywhere.
Are you still throwing away trimmings from your crop? Do you think cooking is your only option? Valuable THC is present in the form of trichomes on nearly every part of the plant, and you can smoke every last one. Dry-sieving through a screen into a kif box is one way to collect trichomes, but Bubblebags waterhash kits (High Tech, Nov. '01 HT) use ice-cold water and are more efficient. You provide the material, the bucket, and any household hand mixer. It’s easy and only takes a little more than an hour. The best hash in the world is free! The 5-gallon kits are right for most folks and sell for $220. To get yours, go to bubblebag.com, or call (866) MELTING.
Every grower should know how much dried product a crop yields, if only to compare against other harvests. Nothing is quicker or more accurate than digital scales. They guarantee the lowest prices. The scale pictured sells for only $60; other models go for up to $150.
Everyone's favorite time is harvest time! Stress levels come down, love levels begin to soar, and all seems right in the world. It used to be that all one needed for harvesting was scissors, some string, and a closet to hang the buds in. This will still work just fine.
For over four decades, the Smothers Brothers have remained atop the show-business pile and conquered ail mediums with sold-out live performances, million-selling comedy albums, and one very controversial television show. In the '60s, The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was a freewheeling, hour-long variety program that skewered the political establishment with sharp satire and drew a hip, young audience by showcasing the world's hottest rock acts.
The soil here is so fertile that when I used fertilizer, it stunted my plants. The hardest part was manicuring the 2-plus pounds from one plant. Remember: Loose lips sink ships. Anonymous Southern California Wha’ gwan, HIGH TIMES crew?! Bigup to y’all.
Finding natural products for hydroponics has only been a dream for most cultivators. Except for a few hard-core botanist types who would meticulously monitor nutrient and pH levels, replacing solutions several times a week, using homemade preparations usually required more trial and error than most people wanted to deal with.
I had never heard of colloidal silver until I received a Flower Power Colloidal Silver generator and a book on the subject by Mark Metcalf. Later that day, I had a conversation with a friend about her using colloidal-silver therapy, believing that it improved her health.
Don't throw away all your leaf and trim after harvest. Here's an easy way to turn it into connoisseur-grade hash.
Bubble hash is a relatively new term given to pressed hash made from pure trichomes. When you fire up traditional hashish, impurities in the resin will burn. Pure, unadulterated cannabis-trichome resin will bubble and melt like butter when flame is applied.

The stalks of my adult plants develop a gray/dark mold. I have about 50 plants. The mold is only on the stalk, not the leaves or buds. Hydrogen peroxide does not kill it, but isopropyl alcohol will if I catch it soon enough. If I don’t catch it in time, the mold causes the branch to fall off with no wilting of leaves.
Recover from all the fun you had at the 15th Annual Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam. Check the HIGH TIMES Website, hightimes.com, for the winners and information about the event. December 21st is the shortest day of the year. Growing outdoors now is very difficult because of diminished hours of daylight, and the sun is at a lower angle in the sky, which means sunlight intensity is greatly reduced.
