One day Heather Carolin e-mailed us. She had recently appeared in Playboy and wanted to model for us. She told us she was totally down with the marijuana movement. Editor-in-Chief Steve Hager began spinning out possible themes and stumbled upon “Lady Budiva.”
I am truly saddened that the last few issues had some hostile, almost hateful letters. If we turn to infighting, we lose sight of the larger goal: We are all bound together by a shared love of the herb. Our enemies will use our infighting against us to divide us and undermine our cause.
San Francisco initiative could make city government a provider.
On July 23, San Francisco supervisors placed a measure on the ballot for the November municipal election that could make the city the first in the US to supply patients with medicinal cannabis directly. City Supervisor Mark Leno drafted the measure in response to the DEA's raids on California medical-marijuana clubs, including the Feb. 12 bust of the Harm Reduction Center here.
At the US Marine base at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina, a two-year undercover probe resulted in the seizure of more than $1.4 million in drugs, primarily Ecstasy. Charges were brought against 84 active-duty Marines and sailors. Sixty-one were accused of distributing drugs and 23 of using them.
Of all the wonderful women who attended the NORML Conference last April in San Francisco, one stood out from the rest. Her name is Jasmine Raff, and she dances for a living—at the Mitchell Brothers O’Farrell Theatre-as what is known as an “exotic dancer.”
The members of the band Pyrx handle their instruments with as much virtuosity as they handle these bongs. That’s because four out of the five players are glassblowers. Blaze1 (right) started the band and figured that Pyrx was an apt moniker for a bunch of dudes who shape scorching hot Pyrex into sleek weapons of delight, but who also risk shattering their creations with their hard-pounding vibe-“a fusion of Sublime and the Beastie Boys,” he says.
Law enforcement steps up the harrassment at the National Rainbow Gathering.
WATERSMEET, MI—Before noon on the Fourth of July, thousands camped for the National Rainbow Gathering in Michigan’s Ottawa National Forest began to silently drift west, past tents and campfires smoldering from the night before. At a bottleneck on the east bank of Sucker Creek, pilgrims in tie-dyes and cutoffs reverentially inhaled from a stick of burning sage before crossing a hand-built bridge.
Experts are telling us that ultraviolet radiation may be responsible for malignant melanoma. That means the sun is very, very dangerous. It’s up there in the sky trying to kill us with ultraviolet death rays. And tanning beds and sun lamps are equally lethal.
HIGH TIMES’ Pot Luck is coming to a theater near you.
It’s a simple scene. Two characters in a movie cross a street. In the background, the Twin Towers hover. The scene was shot in the summer of 2000, a year before the downing of the towers. The scene is in HIGH TIMES’ Pot Luck, the first movie ever coproduced by this company.
“Marijuana can be a sexual mentor and a sublime electrician, bringing the lights of Broadway to women who have spent years in frigid darkness,” writes Natalie Angier in her best-selling book, Woman: An Intimate Geography [Anchor Books].
High above New York’s Times Square in a tiny studio, dancehall reggae star Sean Paul puffs on a thick spliff as he takes a break from recording his verse for a remix with a crazed white American rapper named Mike Down. While Down’s lyrical content pretty much takes the Eminem “by any means necessary” approach to mind-altering substances-just say yes to pills, booze and all of the above-Paul is definitely what his fellow Jamaicans call an “herbalist.”
Neil Michael Hagerty has left Royal Trux and a life of rock excess behind.
I met one of the great rock independents the other night before his show at the Knitting Factory in New York City. His name is Neil Michael Hagerty, and his career is almost a fable of underground American music. A fierce believer in individual rights and the promise of America, Hagerty is outspoken in his support of HIGH TIMES and the legalization of pot.
Nick McDonell, at age 17, has pumped out a first novel, Twelve (Grove Press), about drugged-out preppies on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, that’s getting major props from everyone from Joan Didion to Hunter S. Thompson. Indeed, Thompson went so far as to predict, “I’m afraid [McDonell] will do for his generation what I did for mine.”
A few years ago, we threw a Halloween party in an old painters’ union hall in town. It was a perfect choice, because we don’t believe in the invitation-only party. All the freaks in town were invited to the big bash. How can you have a wild-ass party and be an elitist at the same time?

Britain's government has moved to reduce pot arrests, but it’s not yet safe to smoke in Stoke or get caned in Cambridge.
The British government has asked Parliament to ease pot penalties, changing the law so that police will no longer be required to arrest people possessing small quantities of cannabis. Home Secretary David Blunkett announced July 10 that he would ask to have cannabis moved from Class B to Class C of the UK’s drug laws, effective next July.

FORT WORTH, TX-Is the herbicide sprayed from planes to kill Colombian coca and opium plants accidentally drifting into Ecuador, or is the US deliberately defoliating the border areas? A lawsuit filed in September 2001 against DynCorp, the US company with the Plan Colombia contract to eradicate coca bushes and opium poppies in the Colombian state of Putumayo, alleges that the aerial spraying there is poisoning thousands of people, their food crops and the rainforest in Ecuador’s Sucumbios Province.
NORTH NORWAY, ME—Fifty armed local, county and state cops, some dressed as soldiers and brandishing assault rifles, terrorized families and children during a Saturday afternoon raid on the FUDAfest gathering in western Maine on July 13.

About 300 people rallied in Farragut Square, swelling to over 2,500 for the march past the White House, and more came for the free concert and dance party on the Capitol Mall.
DALLAS, TX-Two of the informants involved in the Dallas police fake-drugs scandal (HighWitness News, Sept. ’02 HT) have agreed to plead guilty to civil rights charges in exchange for testifying against their police handlers. Jose Ruiz-Serrano and Reyes Roberto Rodriguez agreed to the FBI plea deal in early July and are expected to testify before the end of the year that drug cops Mark Delapaz and Eddie Herrera knew that crushed plasterboard and pool chalk were being used as “cocaine” and “methamphetamine” to frame innocent people as drug dealers.

Since recent Supreme Court decisions and changing security concerns have altered and restricted our constitutional protection against unreasonable searches and seizures, it is more important than ever to understand your rights during an encounter with law enforcement personnel.
SAN FRANCISCO—“Please acknowledge the community in this story,” Wayne Justmann requested. “The strength of Prop 215 is the patient base itself. That’s the strength which will change the law, and society will become more compassionate and understanding.”
Dan Castellaneta, who is the voice of Homer on The Simpsons, and I have long been fans of each other’s work. I was impressed by his versatility as an actor on The Tracy Ullman Show, as well as by his live appearances with an improvisational troupe and his own one-person, multicharacter show.
COINTELPRO, or Counter Intelligence Program, was a massive government operation turned loose on the citizens of the US during the 1960s and '70s. In the late '70s, its operations, largely (but not exclusively) coordinated from within the FBI, were exposed, thanks to the work of the late Senator Frank Church and many others.
THE FAIRER SEX REVEALS THE MAGICAL GIFTS OF CANNABIS
SITA VON WINDHEIM
Los Angeles Activist, model (featured in Playboy, April ’02) “I always wanted to be in HIGH TIMES. It’s been my little dream since I started smoking pot. My parents read HIGH TIMES; I guess I’m allowing the tradition to continue. I think the only reason marijuana isn’t legal is because the government hasn’t figured out a way to tax it.
So what is Tantric sex all about? In this excerpt from Sexual Secrets: The Alchemy of Ecstasy [which remains the best-selling guide to Tantra in the West], the author gives blow-by-blow instructions on how to approach lovemaking from a Tantric perspective.
THE PLEASURES OF POT AND SEX
Most explanations of the Tantric love-rite are highly complex and likely to confuse a Westerner unaccustomed to Eastern ritual. For this reason, we will give here a version that, athough direct and complete, is greatly simplified. It is important that the Secret Rite not be rushed or interrupted.
Nothing compares to the best organic herb. The buds have a more pungent stink, sweeter flavor and a better-quality high than most hydroponic herb. Organic smoke flows smoother through the throat, then expands in the lungs, kicking the smoker in the back of the eyes, resulting in a sweet, dreamy, energized high and a pleasant aftertaste.
Somewhere in the rolling green hinterlands of upstate New York, a group of organic herb growers known as the Eco Gang lives, breathes and grows some of the finest-quality herb from Plattsburgh to PA. The gang is no group of horticultural neophytes, as most have already produced successful indoor and outdoor crops on a small but high-quality scale.
ALEISTER CROWLEY AND THE O+O'S CIA-NAZI CONNECTIONS.
Aleister Crowley’s proponents argue that “the Beast of the Apocalypse" and his international anti-Christian gnostic sect, the Ordis Templis Orientis (OTO), have been given a bad rap. Rumors of infiltration by the intelligence establishment, Satanism, fascist influences and mind control have long dogged the order.
Compost tea is a natural way to provide nutrients and beneficial organisms to your plants, and can even help battle diseases.
Beneficial Soil Organisms
Diseases and Cures
Hmmm, how about a nice big, warm glass of compost tea? Doesn’t sound good, and if you are ever asked that at a coffeeshop, get the hell out of there. Compost tea is exactly that—a tea made from compost to be given to plants or soil, not to people. Compost teas have been used for soil boosting and foliar feeding for quite some time.
Nik Douglas grew up in Egypt, India and England. His father was a scientist, his mother a spiritualist. He helped kick-start British rock in the '60s. Sometimes it can be a challenge finding great new grow products. Especially since placing myself on temporary retirement from field duty. Readers and friends are a big help with research and ideas, and of course product manufacturers are always ready to chew my ear off for an hour, telling me exactly how and why their new product is revolutionary.
People want to know if it’s OK to squeeze or touch developing flowers. Of course not! You wouldn’t want to squeeze a tomato or a piece of fruit as it’s growing, because you would bruise it. This is a very bad habit, one you should not perpetuate-especially with those having even less experience than you.
