We've heard a lot of myths of how "420" came to mean "smokin' time." from reports of it being the California police code for "pot-smoking.” to the fact that there are 420 distinct chemicals in marijuana. The real 420 story is that it was invented by a band called the Waldos in San Rafael, CA in 1972 who picked 4:20 'cause it was the best time for them to meet, and then popularized the ritual via flyers at rock concerts.
It is amazing how many experts there are on growing cannabis and how different their opinions are. Even the infamous Max Yields and the notorious Kushman disagree frequently. Ed and Mel have authored books together that do not agree with books they have written separately.
Hundreds of people whoop noisily whenever someone's sample glass slips and shatters at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. The festival is America’s largest annual beer-industry event, with representatives of 400 brewpubs, microbreweries and major labels proffering 1,700 American brands within a large exposition hall.
If you think you’ve heard absolutely everything, once again you’re wrong. In the Cant’s Law Enforcement Equipment Company’s catalog, which advertises all sorts of cool police toys like guns, Mace, badges, uniforms and a whole array of SWAT-team gear, the Mt. Everest of hypocrisy has finally been scaled.
It’s so hard to choose, isn’t it? Chardonnay, Chablis, Merlot— so many wines, so little time. Let’s get to the point. If you want a sophisticated wine, you need a little education. We’re here to tell you that some of the classiest wines to come our way hail from the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York.
HIGH TIMES: What’s it like having your past drug problems brought up every time you’re interviewed? David Crosby: Some interviewers have insight into what addiction is, some don’t. Most people—most straight people—really don’t have an understanding of drugs.
The idea of merging the worlds of jazz and rock was a mortifying thought to jazz purists in 1969, but entirely logical and welcome to the under-30 set. Into this chasm stepped trumpeter Miles Davis with the legendary Bitches Brew double album.
Former HIGH TIMES editor Larry “Ratso” Sloman'S Reefer Madness (St. Martin’s Press) is a breezy, highly readable history of cannabis in the United States, from Fitz Hugh Ludlow’s Poe-esque hashish nightmares to pot’s now-familiar progression from Mexicans to jazz musicians to beatniks to hippies to just about everyone.
Sly and sophisticated, New York’s Fun Lovin' Criminals pay tribute to their favorite exotic import on their second album. They even highlight an East Village weed spot where dealers “have what you need/A little bag with much too many seeds/Up on 10th Street.”
By the early ’80s, HIGH TIMES had steered in a more pharmaceutical direction. Senior editor STEVE BLOOM was just one reader who was turned off while Groucho tuned in.
The ’80s were a weird time for HIGH TIMES. After the boom years of the ’70s, when Tom Forçade hatched the magazine, Ronald Reagan took over the country. “Just Say No” was just around the corner as I peeked at the February 1981 issue (#61) with an illustration of Groucho Marx on the cover, screaming I DROPPED ACID WITH GROUCHO. I had never read HIGH TIMES before.
With little attention in the United States, several European countries are moving to liberalize their drug policies. Several German states have decriminalized personal possession of cannabis. The prolegalization Green Party has gained a place in France’s traditionally hardline government.
SACRAMENTO, CA—Incoming state Attorney General Bill Lockyer had this to say about the way his predecessor, Dan Lungren, enforced the state’s medical-marijuana law: “There were days when I thought Dan had a copy of Reefer Madness at home.”
Clinton And Racists Unite Against Medical Marijuana
WASHINGTON, DC—Congressional Drug Warriors went up foursquare against democracy just before last November's elections, when residents here voted on a medical-marijuana law. Initiative 59. Supporters of 1-59 had to go to court to challenge Congress' determination that it would be illegal to even count the votes for any proposition that might reduce penalties for marijuana.
Robert Randall was the first person in the United States to smoke pot legally since prohibition was enacted. He discovered in 1973 that pot helped his glaucoma—and successfully sued the government for both the right to smoke and a guaranteed supply after he was busted two years later.
SAN FRANCISCO—“Sierra Spice” was the surprise winner in a Northern California cannabis contest held here last November. “I can’t even begin to tell you the exhilaration,” winner Sierra CPO told HIGH TIMES. “It was like 15 years of growing was right there.”
SWIHTCO UPDATE: Swiss 'MEDICAL HEMP' Cases Work Through US Courts
KEY WEST, FL—Two unprecedented marijuana cases involving Americans who were busted after receiving packages of weed mailed to them from a Swiss mail-order "hemp" company have received notably prompt disposition in the courts.
A Michigan businessman convicted of selling $10 worth of marijuana 24 years ago must return to Virginia to serve jail time, a federal judge has ruled. Alfred Martin, 49, received a 10-year term in 1974, but escaped a prison farm after two days and relocated to Michigan.
the logo at www.marinol.com shows a half-eaten apple and a warning: “May Be Habit-Forming.” Curious for an appetite stimulant being marketed to patients with AIDS, and to chemotherapy patients as an antinausea agent. When MarinolTM was first introduced, it was suspected to have a “high potential for abuse,” and it’s now a Schedule II drug.
FROM THE SNEAKY TO THE LETHAL, THE DRUG WAR MACHINE IS CONSTANTLY FINDING NEW WAYS TO BUST PEOPLE.
CONSTANCE EMERSON CROOKER
STOP AND TALK: Police often stop suspects for routine traffic offenses as a pretext for a drug search. Officers are trained to carry out the initial contact as if speaking only about the traffic offense. Then they announce, “You are free to leave.”
MARBLEHEAD, MA—One night like many others in 1974, 16-year-old Bill Downing and his buddy crossed the border into Brewster, NY to drink a few brews. But while sparking up in the bar parking lot, they got busted. His parents in suburban Newtown, Connecticut were pissed.

From a distance, Jasmine Raff's life looks like what you'd expect from a successful avant-garde artist, cyberstar and model. You're as likely to find her sky-diving at 14,000 feet as in front of the camera of Penthouse's photographic wizard Ken Marcus.
Activists brought hemp back. But now they’re being told to shut up about pot. Are they wearing out their welcome?
Last spring a New Hampshire legislator ready to vote in favor of the state’s first hemp bill abruptly changed his mind when he saw a dreadlocked prohemp activist dressed like Jesus Christ on the statehouse steps. “I’m not voting for anything he supports,” he muttered.
Gaspar ranted enthusiastically about his garden as we sped along the Spanish streets on the back of his beat-up vespa, the potholes punctuating his excited words. He talked of the superiority of the sativa high as we raced past tall plaster and stone walls dotted with small balconies.

In a medium cluttered with hacks, Larry “Ratso” Sloman has always been something of a visionary. Whether it’s Thin Ice (1984), the Spinal Tap of sports books, or his classic tour diary On the Road With Bob Dylan: Rolling With the Thunder (1978), a book somehow beloved by its irascible subject (Joni Mitchell gave Sloman the moniker Ratso, but it was Dylan who made it stick), his work is epically hilarious.

THESE NEW PRODUCTS PROMOTE GROWTH, KILL PESTS AND PREVENT DISEASE IN YOUR PLANTS.
Both organic and hydroponic growers face the problem of replacing or cleaning the medium after each crop. Usually potting mixes and rockwool are replaced while clay pebbles are washed. These measures are taken to prevent cross-generational spread of disease.
I heard that dealers sometimes “cut” the weed with various fluids or processes that make the pot weigh more than it normally would. This way they can sell less for more and make more money. A friend told me that even wetting it with a small amount of water can lift the weight up almost 1/8th of the total mass.

My 400-watt high-pressure sodium bloom bulb, which has a reddish light, just burned out. I replaced it with a bulb I used for vegetative growth, which emits a bluish light. Will the change in light affect my budding plants? Worried Grower USA The change in spectrum from a lamp high in orange and red light to one high in blue will have some effect upon the plants but will not shock them.
Come to Amsterdam for the 11th Cup, with the inductions of Louis Armstrong and Mezz Mezzrow into the Cannabis Hall of Fame. High Priest John Sinclair (founder of the White Panther Party) files a report on the festivities and rates the seed-company strains.
