along with Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, author William Burroughs helped spawn the movement we call the counterculture. Which actually is rather ironic: Burroughs may have frequently railed against the Drug War and homophobia in his dry.
I want to thank Peter Gorman for the opportunity to speak at WHEE! It was quite an experience. After the announcement from the stage, we gathered $1,500 for the referendum, and by continuing to work the crowd, we were able to bring that to almost $3,000.
The Beat Generation suffered yet another loss with the death of writer William S. Burroughs on August 2. Burroughs, known best for his controversial novel Naked Lunch and once hailed by Norman Mailer as "the only American novelist living today who may conceivably be possessed by genius," passed away in Lawrence, KS from complications stemming from a heart attack.
The Lost Boyz preach Love, Peace & Nappiness on their new joint.
ASONDRA R. HUNTER
"I'm so high, my music makes me high,” the Lost Boyz's frontman Mr. Cheeks casually chants like a mantra. His swollen foot (he won’t tell me how it got that way) is bound in place with several pairs of tube socks instead of a fiberglass cast. And no, it isn’t slowing him down.
Roy Howard and his companion, Jeryl Abramson, who hosted the 27th anniversary of the Woodstock festival last year, had been planning "Bethel ’97" ever since. Their land is Max Yasgur’s former homestead, which includes his home, farmhouse and calving barn.

With a steady stream of tribute albums being released nowadays, the reverential promotion of a star's legacy can seem more like a marketing ploy than an honorable homage. Still, some of these commemorative efforts are quite genuine. Two recent CDs chronicle the careers of counterculture superheroes Jack Kerouac and Timothy Leary.
Phish can do no wrong. Anyone who considers themselves a phan already knows this, but the 65.000 Phish-heads who phlocked to Limestone, ME—the site of The Great Went—couldn't get it out of their collective head. What promised to be a weekend of communal campgrounds, everlasting improvs and glass pipes galore exceeded all expectations set by its predecessor, last year's Clifford Ball.

The marijuana muse, the pixie who whispers good ideas into stoned minds, has been a mysterious afflatus for ages of artists. The books featured here, depicting various facets of the pot experience, could be Christmas gifts for the well-read stoner on your list.
See Jane Dish. In Killer Instinct, the new book about the making of Natural Born Killers, the film’s coproducer Jane Hamsher offers her take on the behind-the-scenes complications, conflicts and madness surrounding that project. Her brash, personal tone and unflinching candor has made this tell-all the talk of Tinseltown.
Inspired by a Phish song, director Peter Shapiro and cinematographer Alex Cornfeld decided to drive through all 48 continental states, covering 13,254 miles in 30 days, to shoot footage for their seven-minute short, American Road. “The whole concept for the film came when I was listening to ’You Enjoy Myself [off A Live One] one night after having just driven cross-country," explains Shapiro.
In the October “Smokescreen,” we mistakenly ran a photo of Lee Holmes instead of Kevin Corrigan to go along with the article “Stoners on the Set.” Both actors appear in the film Bandwagon, and both are stoners, but the interview was with Corrigan, not Holmes, and we misidentified Holmes as Corrigan in the photo caption.
The Starwood Festival is one of summer’s best-known and best-kept secrets. Since 1980, a Cleveland group of computer geniuses, techno-pagans, and irrationaleers (a.k.a. the Association for Consciousness Exploration) have organized parties, raves and events often imitated but never duplicated.
CHIANG MAI, THAILAND—The nasty Cambodian coup last July in which strongman Hun Sen drove his co-Prime Minister, Prince Norodom Ranariddh, into exile and massacred his leading supporters, briefly made international news. Few journalists outside Asia, however, have examined how the victors financed their quick-and-bloody consolidation of power with dope money—including marijuana money.
WASHINGTON, DC—“We’re very enthusiastic about it!” exclaimed Jack Maple, executive assistant to White House Drug Czar Gen. Barry McCaffrey, when the National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued a formal call last August for “more and better” research into marijuana’s medical properties.
WASHINGTON SUPREME COURT TO MARIJUANA PATIENT: DROP DEAD

OLYMPIA, WA—While the Washington State Supreme Court may have decided that marijuana has no medical value [see accompanying story], the people of Washington State may decide differently early this November when they go to the polls to vote on Initiative 685, the Drug Medicalization and Prevention Act of 1997.
OTTAWA, ONTARIO—Starting next spring, cannabis ought to become a common sight on Canadian farm fields, as the ruling Liberal Party has rescinded a six-decade-old ban on cultivating commercial hemp. Health Canada, the Canadian equivalent of the US Social Security Administration, is now responsible (instead of a police agency) for overseeing hemp production here.
JUDGE FINDS POT HARMLESS, BUT TOO HOT FOR CANADIANS
LONDON, ON—Although agreeing that marijuana use is relatively harmless, an Ontario provincial judge has passed the buck on a constitutional challenge to Canada’s pot laws, saying any changes to the country’s drug legislation should be made by politicians.

California Bill to Study Medical Marijuana Delayed
SACRAMENTO—A bill sponsored by California State Senator John Vasconcellos (D-Santa Clara) which called for establishing a state medical marijuana research program was shelved until 1998 when the California Assembly adjourned its 1997 session without appropriating the funding required for the study.
ETHIOPIAN MONKS GROW THEIR OWN Ethiopian police arrested 12 monks for growing and selling cannabis for the last 14 years. The monks admitted they grew cannabis at monasteries in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church stronghold of Gojjam in the northern Amharar region.
PHOENIX—Once again, voters in Arizona will have the opportunity next year to tell their state legislators just what they think of the idea of legalized medicinal marijuana. Last April, a bill sponsored by state Sen. John Kaites (R-Glendale) effectively nullified Arizona’s newly enacted Drug Medicalization, Prevention and Control Act, passed by initiative in the November 1996 election (High Witness News, Aug. ’97).
DR. ROB KILLIAN Behind Washington’s Initiative 685
TACOMA, WA— When reporters cover his drive to legalize medical marijuana, chuckles Dr. Rob Killian, 36, “They love to point out the contradiction that I was raised in a Mormon family in Issaquah. But they don’t also mention that I’m not a Mormon anymore.”
I grew up naive and patriotic in a conservative suburban neighborhood. My parents, church and schoolteachers told me America was a great country because it was governed by the rule of law, by wise and fair police officers who protected good people from bad people.
What is going on here? In the last few months, several cannabis issues have been dealt with fairly and rationally by the mainstream press! From The New York Times Magazine cover story on medical marijuana to the CNN special report that provided stunningly convincing evidence that America’s cannabis policies have failed, socalled traditional news outlets are giving us facts instead of emotion-laced hyperbole.
NORML Director of Publications With the workplace becoming a major battlefield in the War on Drugs, increasing numbers of employers are deploying a new and unproved technological weapon: hair-testing. LONDON, ONTARIO—On Sept. 5, Judge John McCart sentenced hemp-store owner Chris Clay to three years’ probation and a C$750 fine (about US$540) for selling marijuana seedlings. Ontario prosecutor Bill Buchner and defense attorney Alan Young had both urged McCart not to jail Clay for the 1995 bust, because he had been selling the seedlings solely to test Canada’s marijuana laws.
After my article, “Pull Over! How to Avoid Car-Search Busts,” appeared in the July ’97 HT, I got phone calls from all over the country asking, “If I tell the officer ‘No’ when he or she asks for consent to search, won’t that be the probable cause the officer needs to do the search anyway?” The answer, again, is “No.”
The cocaine epidemic of the late 20th century was largely the creation of the Mafia Cruzeña, a syndicate of wealthy landowners in southern Bolivia who audaciously quintupled the amount of coca leaf growing in the world in the late 1970s. Now, one of the Cruzeña's prime government emissaries has been installed as the Bolivian chief of state.
Hydroponics is fun, it's easy, and best of all, it allows you to grow year-round while having complete control over such environmental factors as light, humidity and temperature, resulting in a higher yield of bigger buds in roughly half the space.

MAHONEY ON MARIJUANA
It’s a May day in L.A., crisp and hot. From my 12th-floor room in the Roosevelt Hotel I can see the Hollywood Hills, dotted with homes and a Chinese restaurant you walk up a steep incline to get to, no cars allowed. On the other side of the range is the San Fernando Valley.
Sociologist Jerry Mandel, 62, president of the National Association of Ethnography and Social Policy in Oakland, CA, calls himself a 'research gypsy.’ A pioneer in the rational examination of US drug policy, Mandel has studied, chronicled and participated in drug cultures since the early 1960s.
This bud is a fine example of a hybrid cross between a male NL #5 x Skunk #1 and a female Jack Herer. The seeds came from Mark Emery Direct Seeds and the buds were extremely potent and resinous, as promised. The amber crystals began to appear only days after I turned my 1,000w MH back to 12 hours on and 12 hours off.
New technology shines a different light on Ebb and Flow Systems
For indoor growers using electric lights, the Sea of Green growing technique produces the best results. Sea of Green is nothing more than spacing plants (usually clones) close together and forcing them to flower at a very young age. The technique not only produces the best yields, but also reduces electricity and light use and makes possible many crops each year.
Manufactured by American Agritech and recently introduced by its American distributor, San Rafael, California-based Diamond Lights, Pure Blend takes growers back to the days of old, when farming and gardening techniques produced big, beautiful ornamentals, edibles and smokables without contributing to the demise of precious soil due to nutrient breakdown and erosion.
PFH, located in Santa Clara. California, offers new aeroponic growing systems that rarely experience that common problem associated with aeroponics—mist-head clogging. Throughout two years of extensive use during testing, the Aquamist system remained clog-free.
It is possible to cure your buds quickly in a microwave without destroying them or their taste when smoked. It takes only 1-3 minutes on low power. All you have to do is place the buds in a container half-filled with cat litter and gently fill the rest of the container covering the top.
I love smoking good bud in my bong as much as the next patriot, but if you are sick, breathing in smoke does not exactly appeal to you. Inhaling potent bud can be difficult enough for healthy pot-smokers. If the person is ill and using it for medicine, it can be a real problem.
Is it possible to get high from the “fumes" of growing plants? How about through the skin from manicuring?
