BY THE TURN OF THE CENTURY, WHITETAIL DEER POPULATIONS IN Florida had been pretty much wiped out by a combination of market hunting and the screw worm fly. Things began looking up in the early 1950s, when a sterilization program got the screw worm under control.

In the September "Exit Laughing," Ed Zern recommends dropping antacid tablets in the woods to counter the effects of acid rain. Count me out on that one. I already carry so many of those tablets for my own use that to tote any more for acid rain neutralization I would have to stop carrying my canteen, rope, extra ammo, and even several Handi-wipes.

A FRIEND OF MINE, OR RATHER his springer spaniel, just had a litter of pups. Knowing that I’m dogless at the moment, he tested me rather severely by handing me a tiny brown-and-white male. The pup closed his eyes and put his head on my shoulder and went to sleep.

TED LEESON
THE RESULTS OF A RECENT government survey indicate that almost 70 million people in this country now fish. It occurred to me that many of them may be new to the sport and in need of basic information on the species most commonly fished. So on their behalf I have compiled this brief guide to North American fishes—their types, habits, and appropriate terminologies.

ABOUT TWENTY YEARS AGO, not long after I’d moved to Colorado from the Midwest, an oldtimer who lived up in the mountains told me that porcupines make great survival food. They don’t taste very good and they are, as you’d expect, a bit ticklish to clean, but a person lost and alone without tools or weapons can bag one with a rock.

BY ALL ACCOUNTS, Christmas dinner was shaping up as the biggest family event in years. The feature attraction was going to be wild turkey—three wild turkeys, in fact, each roasted with a different kind of dressing. The birds had been gathered earlier in the fall when Grandpa, Uncle Walt, and Aunt Nicki traveled to eastern Montana in search of sharptail grouse and found wild turkeys instead.

"SMALL-STREAM TROUT TAKE dry flies best whenever the sun is on the water." That's what my daddy always told me. So I grew up scampering along the edges of mountain creeks, flicking dries at tiny pools. I extracted my share of trout, and fished by this dictum for so many years that thoughts of sunshine and the dry fly became intertwined for me.

THERE'S NOTHING LIKE BUILDing a fence to bring out your elk hunting instincts. The year my son started to totter on his own chubby feet, I knew it was time to fence off the creek that runs in front of our house. Armed with a Forest Service permit, I urged my 4×4 up an abandoned logging road to the edge of a thicket closely packed with lodgepole pines that measured 5 to 6 inches in diameter and reached heights of 25 to 30 feet.

Finding a four-leaf clover is easy. Sinking a hole in one is a snap. Getting a glimpse of a drop-point whitetail rack is difficult. When it comes to grouse hunting in the Northeast, early-season hunters do not always get the birds. Fall hunters put in many hours, sometimes in such a breathtaking, colorful environment that the walk itself is worth the effort. However, the best hunting may come later, after the icy grip of winter spreads a frosty hand across the forests and coverts begin to tighten.

WHY WOULD ANYONE want to use shooting heads—those mini fly lines mostly 30 feet long—on 3-, 4-, and 5-weight rods? Aren't heads just for big stuff like tarpon, salmon, and steelhead? Ideal for distance casting only? casting only? It’s true that heads, as they’re familiarly called, were born for the tournament distance casters of the Golden Gate Casting Club of San Francisco, and that homemade fishing versions began appearing on Western steelhead rivers in 1949.
