THE ILLEGAL HIGH SEAS DRIFTNET FISHERY CONTINUES TO “STRIP-mine” the Northern Pacific, decimating populations of salmon and steelhead spawned in U.S. rivers, as well as marine mammals and sea birds. But there may be open water at the end of the nets.

I read George Reiger's “Instinct and Reality” in September. This is the first time I’ve heard that the anti-hunting proponents think that calling a person a hunter in the U.S. is considered an insult. Perhaps Americans do not go through an apprenticeship as Germans do to qualify for a hunting license, but I disagree that hunting should not be a right of all.

GIVING THANKS
When you think of it, Thanksgiving is something we practice every day, not just when the calendar tells us it's time.
[no value]
[no value]
GENE HILL
LIKE MOST OF US, I GIVE thanks a lot, and I should. Most of my thanksgiving is in response to the unexpected, maybe even the undeserved. I’m thankful, for example, that I found—at long last—the box that holds most of my streamer flies. And I’m thankful that some genius designers have made rods even I can cast with, and that at least a few trout are not all that fussy about a drag free float.

SAVING THE WETLANDS
In the growing debate over this vital resource, the importance of the private landowner is often overlooked or misunderstood.
[no value]
[no value]
GEORGE REIGER
OVER THE YEARS, TOO MANY bureaucrats in mainline conservation organizations and governmental resource agencies have told me that land is only secure when an appropriate public or non-profit bureaucracy controls it. Yet I know of too many public lands and waters where fish and wildlife have declined after those properties were acquired by a public or non-profit bureaucracy because the agencies involved lacked the funds to meet the considerable cost of proper land management.

HUNTING AS WAR
High-tech is fine on the battle field, but not in the game field. Are we at the point where equipment is eclipsing skill?

DAVID E. PLTZAL
A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO I was taken to task by a non-hunter who was outraged at the concept of “sport” hunting. He objected, as many such people do, to the idea of people taking game with “high-powered scope-sighted rifles,” claiming that it gives the animals no chance at all.

JOEL M. VANCE
THERE IS A CHAINSAW CUT IN IT where I thought to make it firewood, before I came to my senses. There are thousands of trees in this woods to burn; this log was put here as a back-rest for me as I hunt squirrels. And to think I almost shoved it in the stove.

FATE AND THE FACTS DO NOT bode well for upland hunters. Land development, agribusiness, and suburbanization continue to chew away at field, glade, and glen to the detriment of quail, grouse, and pheasants, as well as those out-doorsmen who thrill to a staunch point and thunderous rise.

THE FIRST TIME I CARRIED A compass on a hunting trip, I got lost. I was still faithfully following the pointing arrow when a search team found me two days later, moving steadily deeper into the wilderness. The compass was worthless. I didn’t need to know where north was.

PAUL QUINNETT
IN THE SEAFOOD MARKETS OF Japan, the price of fish is determined by its freshness—in minutes, not hours. The same goes for the pricing of dishes in the best Japanese restaurants. Back in the 1960s, I once dined at a famous Japanese eatery built on stilts over the Sea of Japan.

Every last thing you do as a bowhunter rides on your arrows. Here's a guide to buying the good ones... and the right ones.

LIONEL ATWILL
IF THERE IS ONE PIECE OF UNASsailable bowhunting advice, it is this: If you must hunt on the cheap, wear jeans and sneakers, buy a second-hand bow, and hunt in your backyard from a tree stand of used 2×4s. But never, ever scrimp on arrows. Arrows are your most important piece of bowhunting gear (followed by broad-heads, with the bow a distant third).

I HAVE SEEN THE FUTURE OF HUNTING IN America: it is called New Jersey. If you live in a rural state, say Montana or Missouri, you may choose not to believe that. But the immutable truth is that as our population grows, the sprawl of suburbia ultimately will envelope all of us, and the following little drama, which played out in New Jersey, will become our collective anecdote.

MOST HUNTERS AND FISHERmen would like to dedicate their 4×4 compact pickup truck full-time to the pursuit of fish and game, but reality—often in the form of children and mortgages—usually dictates otherwise. For most sportsmen, the truck will see double duty as a commuter or work vehicle and family hauler, which means any modifications designed to make the truck better suited for field use must also be compatible with the truck’s other functions.

FISHING

STRIPERS ON TOP
Working a school of surface-feeding freshwater stripers is about as good as it gets... and now's the best time to catch the action.
TEXOMA INFORMATION
WHEN THEY'RE NOT ON TOP

KEN SCHULTZ
I LOVE TO FISH FOR SALMON, ESPEcially big chinooks, which are not only strong fighters, but challenging to coax into striking. The only thing wrong with them is that they don’t take surface lures. Striped bass, on the other hand, are equally strong and challenging, but they will take a lure on the surface, often en masse, a phenomenon that provides some of the most exciting imaginable moments in freshwater fishing.

MYTHS & MISCONCEPTIONS

WHO'S THE BOSS?
Most of us think that a buck is head of a family, but is he really the one who's in charge?
[no value]
[no value]
SAM CURTIS
THE BIG BUCK MAY BE THE head of the family in the movie Bambi, but in reality it’s the old doe that’s head honcho. She is in charge of the family land, teaches her off-spring how to survive, has a corner on the prime places to live, and tells bucks where to be during the rut.

H. G. TAPPLY
IF YOU WANT a bird dog to hold steady when you shoot, you should hold steady, too. Instead of running ahead to locate the downed bird, stay put. The dog may "break shot" at first, but in time he'll learn that if you don't rush in, he mustn't either.

BREEDING, PART I
Siring good gun dogs is as much an art as it is a science.

BILL TARRANT
THE BREEDING OF DOGS IS both an art and a science,” says Dr. Dick Royse, tinkering with his cold pipe. The sixty-one-year-old, Wichita, Kansas, veterinarian strikes a kitchen match and holds it to the pipe’s bowl as he puffs and says, “You’d be amazed, and you’d be amused, at the notions I’ve heard presented here in my clinic.

The Major and Minor activity periods last 2 to 3 1/3 hours, and 3/4 to 1½ hours, respectively. To pinpoint when the best sport can be expected to begin in your area, start by locating the appropriate bold time-zone rule on the map above. Then find the 4-minute rule that is closest to your area on the map.
