It may have seemed an impossible fantasy. But for the two days during Grammy week when Esquire brought together twenty of the biggest names in music to shoot this month’s fashion feature, “The One-Night Stand” (page 98), it was real, astonishingly real.

AS YOU READ “The Time of Their Lives,” which begins on page 140, think about it not just as the story of thirty men who survived World War II in an extraordinary way but also as a new perspective on the advent of the era of American dominance of world culture that began six decades ago this month.

I only ever thought of Weiland as a scrawny, fey, Sid Vicious poseur, constantly getting arrested for attention and press, and Stone Temple Pilots’ music never did much for me. But Sager’s channeling of Weiland’s insights on his hallucinatory adventures through the deep, dark alley of his addictions and coming out into the “golden glow” of his wife and children (“The Devil Gives You the First Time for Free”) was some of the best and most genuinely moving prose I’ve read in Esquire.

THE ABS ARE KILLING HIM, frankly. If ever a movie star needed to spend a year avoiding the gym and scarfing down crullers, Brad Pitt is the guy. I’m not talking Kirstie Alley here, or even Travolta or Hanks at their porkiest; a very slight paunch would probably suffice.

Cal Fussman

A Pulitzer-prize-winning novel by Richard Russo interpreted by a cast that includes Paul Newman, Ed Harris, Joanne Woodward, and Helen Hunt adds up to more than a movie. The HBO miniseries Empire Falls (May 28 and 29 at 9:00 P.M.) depicts a tapestry of characters trying to work out their lives in a small Maine town that seems to have more of a past than a future. Cal Fussman sat down with Newman and Harris to talk about it in Newman’s New York City apartment.

It's time to throw out everything you thought you knew about world music. Namely, that it doesn't rock.

WHEN I WAS A KID playing air guitar to “Rock You Like a Hurricane,” I didn’t care that my new favorite band was from Germany. I’d have loved the Scorpions just the same if the band were from around the corner or around the world. As luck would have it, about 20 years later the five current bands I’m most obsessed with also fail to qualify for a MADE IN THE U.S.A. sticker.

SCOTT FRAMPTON
IT’S TROUBLING when rock legends don’t have the courtesy to preserve their legacies with a well-timed overdose or plane crash. Thus, we must endure Rod Stewart’s coughing up a lung all over the American songbook. And thus, our ingrained image of 56-year-old Robert Plant as Led Zeppelin’s leonine, tight-panted banshee is compromised by his stubborn insistence on rocking well into Buick-buying age.

THE FIRST RULE of reviewing a Chuck Palahniuk book is Be Nice to Mr. Palahniuk. Not because he sells a boatload of books, which he does, nor because he has led a rough life, which he has. No, you are nice to Mr. Palahniuk because of all his Fight Club fan boys, wild with rage, choked by love and loyalty (like Ayn Rand devotees but with tattoos and tire irons), who, unlike their guru, unable to find a voice of their own on the page, tend to act out against strangers who tar their master’s sinewy genius with discernment’s brush.

THIS JUNE, I SHALL BECOME a thirty-three-year-old human, which (for me) is probably middle age. Purely as a numeric designation, “33” ranks among my favorite nonprime numbers: It was Bird’s and Kareem’s jersey number (and Magic’s, at least during college), it’s symmetrical (if you look at it sideways), and it’s divisible by eleven (which, I will grant, is not my strongest point).

How do I tell my wife that if she wants our sex life to improve, she should go on a diet? I watch what I eat and visit the gym three times a week. I’ve held up my end of the bargain. But to answer your question, no, I don’t think you’re out of line. It is reasonable to expect a certain amount of consistency in a relationship.

1. Sometimes a blow job means “Don’t call me.” It’s a subtle thing. And believe us, most of them are quite sincere. But every once in a while, it’s late, we’re tired, and me just need to get out of the car without an explanation. 2. Never tell us we remind you of Bonnie Franklin.

IF THE PHRASE “DON’T HAVE A THROMBO” makes you think of Austin Powers instead of the antiplatelet drug Plavix, that’s okay with Sanofi-Aventis. The lack of name recognition for the world’s third-biggest drug company is mysterious. When I told my editor I wanted to write about Sanofi, he said, “Who?” Only four analysts even have a rating on the French company.

Perhaps you’re wondering why I, the Overstimulated Girl, would choose to take a supplement designed to boost virility and testosterone production. It’s not that I want to look like a Bulgarian power lifter. Tribulus has something else to offer, something that many pills promise but don’t deliver (at least for me): It turbocharges your libido.

Eva Green could sell porn to a Mormon. If you listen closely to the twenty-four-year-old Parisian, she’ll convince you that there was nothing at all salacious about her role in Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Dreamers. Sure, the movie was so sexually explicit that it garnered an NC-17 rating.
