Last year, in finishing up the manuscript of a book about the early days at Esquire, which Crown Publishers brought out under the title Nothing But People, we had occasion to discuss Ernest Hemingway’s story The Snows of Kilimanjaro, which was first printed in Esquire in August, 1936.

Breakfast last Tuesday at the Park Lane to discuss with George Lois the cover for next month's issue. Uncharacteristically, he showed up about eight minutes late, apologizing because his earlier meeting had run long. Earlier by how much, I asked.

PETER BOGDANOVICH
They say television has replaced the B-movie, but it's not true. The reason why the "second feature" was so often able to achieve such vigor and interest is that it was made, so to speak, while no one was looking. Never taken very seriously by critics, and even less so by the studios (as long as costs and schedules were closely observed), the B-movie director could many times work in a freer atmosphere than some of his higher-budgeted contemporaries.

THEODORE WEISS
One poet tells us of blinded children beating at their eyes, perhaps to strike the sparks from them of light burnt out. And another is much moved to make a poem out of a report that H. D., having a stroke, fiercely desires to communicate and “strikes her breast in passionate frustration when there is no word at her tongue's tip.”

As an internationally known nongourmet and, haute-cuisine-wise, an embarrassment to my friends, I have no business being at the East Hampton beach-front home of Craig Claiborne. But here I am anyway, the occasion a fund-raisingclambake for George McGovern, my hundred dollars paid by check in advance.

AUBERON WAUGH
London reeled with astonishment when it learned that “Grocer” Heath, the plump, unmarried Prime Minister, had actually decided to take a political initiative in the Ulster crisis. This was after many, many months of saying there could be no initiative until terrorism was defeated, and the Northern Irish were currently blowing up each other at a record rate.

You have now fallen three times in love With the same girl, first indeed blindly And at her blind insistence: Next with your heart alive to the danger Of what hers might conceal, although such passion Strikes nobly and for ever: Now at last, deep in dream, transported To her rose garden on the high ridge, Assured that there she can deny you No deserved privilege, However controvertible or new.

There are two restaurants in the remodeled town house at 137 East Fifty-fifth Street in Manhattan and both of them belong to Armando Mei. He seems proudest of the elegant dining room on the first floor, called Iperbole, and it is a distinctive place, with classic Italian food served in what at first seems to be classic simplicity.

MURRAY KEMPTON
He was twenty when he began these voyagings, and he is supposed to have said then that this first trip around the league was like riding through a beautiful park and getting paid for it. Out of all those playgrounds, only Wrigley Field in Chicago is still used for baseball; everywhere else he is older than any piece of turf upon which he stands.

Staten Island is the fifth borough of New York City, no matter where one begins to count. It is also the smallest in population, probably the most exotic (containing the largest live rattlesnake collection in the United States and a Tibetan temple) and it is the home of a select few literary-artistic types including Jerry Bowles (If Cartier, Tiffany, Porthault, Harry Winston, Bonwit Teller, Charles Jourdan and Bergdorf Goodman can’t make the rich happy, who can?

NORA EPHRON
I have not looked at The Best of Everything since I first bought it— remaindered in paperback—ten years ago, but I have a perverse fondness for it. In case you somehow missed it, The Best of Everything was a novel by Rona Jaffe about the lives of four, or was it five, single women in New York; it was pretty good trash, as trash goes, which is not why I am fond of it.

To read certain writers is to be plunged once again, like a child being read his first story, into a world of the primary emotions. The naked artistic will, with its self-evident strategies and designs, remains discreetly in the distance.

The Green Wall, a Peruvian film written and directed by Armando Robles Godoy, is that rarest of contemporary pictures, which is to say one in which the characters are represented as what used to be known as altogether normal, thoroughly decent human beings.

Elsewhere in this issue you’ll find our choice of ten top travel buys and thirteen outstanding travel adventures, a goodly number of them in Europe. Up until fairly recently it would have made little sense to talk about European travel in a magazine coming out in mid-August because by then most travelers headed for Europe would already have gone there.

MALCOLM MUGGERIDGE
Otto Friedrich’s study of Berlin in the pre-Hitler years (Before the Deluge, Harper & Row, $10) is so full of lessons for us, all, I’m glad to say, implicit rather than explicit, that one has to put it down from time to time to take breath. The drugs; the kinky night-clubs; the romantic young Wandervogel hippies roaming about twanging their guitars and singing of love, then passing almost automatically, embroidered braces and all, into the ranks of the Hitler Jugend; the unspeakable smut and sex magazines, the blue films, the pederasts, the transvestites; Brecht, the poet-hero, in his proletarian fancy dress, Kurt Weill, the songster and Max Reinhardt, the impresario; minstrel boys like Christopher Isherwood coming from afar to celebrate the scene, voyeurs of the world uniting, with nothing to lose but their paper money, churned out by the Social Democratic Government’s printing presses in ever greater profusion, until, between breakfast and lunch, millions became milliards.
