A paean to the pied piper of golf

A.G.
To the dedicated golfer, as to the fisherman or the car buff, there’s no such thing as too much of his favorite subject. Hence it is with no apology at all that we point out that eighteen of this issue’s pages constitute a special section, devoted entirely to what Alistair Cooke has called “the marvelous mania.”

Cash; McCall’s I was amused by Saul Braun’s piece about the $200,000 novel contest (. . . What The Hell Hope Is There For American Literature, February) but I would like to challenge the impression that the Philistines at McCall’s were largely responsible for the failure to pick a winner.

The Dublin J.P. Donleavy describes in his interview with me on page 126 is a place far different from the city I know, but he is a novelist who lived there a few years as a Trinity student, while I whip in and out every year or so for travel pieces. On my most recent visit, a wintry couple of months ago, I learned again that the visitor’s Ireland can comfortably be a land of all seasons.

With some gnashing of brows, it can scrutably be admitted now, Esquire’s Advertising and Promotion staffs have for the last few months been seeking just the right word to express this magazine’s personality. Involvement is the trait with the vote so far, and they may have a point.

The one has that tight-lipped smile, as if he’d just smelled something unpleasant, and the other is so insufferably pixieish, so excruciatingly unfunny, that he makes me want to throw up. Still, godawful as they are, Huntley and Brinkley may not be entirely to blame for their pedestrian performances.

L’Etoile, the newest star in the growing galaxy of restaurants belonging to The Brody Corporation, was opened late last spring at One East Fifty-ninth Street, within the building that houses the Sherry Netherland Hotel but separate from it in that the entrance is its own. It is bounded on the east by the Playboy Club, on the west by A la Viellie Russie, and on the south by ironwork that someday will hold up a skyscraper. Jerome Brody and Philip Miles of the corporation have a more farsighted view, however; they prefer to look just beyond, over Fifth Avenue to that lovely plaza fronting The Plaza, an area they consider New York’s approximation of Paris’ beautiful Etoile section. Thus the name; that and the fact that it is a French restaurant, and a glittering one. As a restaurant,

Michaelangelo Antonioni, the Big A., has come and gone, and to judge from a spattering of interviews, the old comedy of errorful manners took place: the aesthetes rolled up expecting to meet one of their own, and received for their pains answers worthy of Primo Carnera.

MALCOLM MUGGERIDGE
The attitude of liberals and leftwingers generally to the Soviet regime in the Thirties has now become part of history. It generated much rage, ranging between the crazy fury of a Senator McCarthy and the splendid irony of a George Orwell, whose Animal Farm still stands as the one truly imaginative, literary treatment of the theme, with Arthur Koestler’s Darkness at Noon as runner-up.

We are all of us brought up to think well of the girl next door, and by and large we do. A magazine has made a lot of money in recent years catering to the American taste for the girl next door. But the assumption in all this is that the girl next door is an ordinary sort, undemanding, comfortable—even zaftig.
