Inconclusive skirmish of the war on poverty

The impressionistic account of a great prize novel contest on page 76—a race in which there was no winner and hence no prize—is a thing that we read with mixed feeling, for it struck us at once as both funny and sad. Funny in that one of the reasons cited for the failure of the contest to attain its avowed objective is the fact that the prize money totaled “only” a little over two hundred thousand dollars.

RICHARD JOSEPH
During our interviews with Master Photographer Edward Steichen on where he’d go on one last, grand tour of Europe (see page 82) he lamented the fact that his native Luxembourg had been virtually undiscovered by American travelers, so we decided to go over to see what’s to discover, and in so doing we felt like the discoverer of Julie Andrews —whoever he was—must have felt when he discovered Julie Andrews.

DWIGHT MACDONALD
The most extraordinary and, for once in these depressing times, inspiriting news of the month is the Petition to the Presidium of the 23rd Congress of the Soviet Communist Party signed by sixty-three Soviet writers, including Ilya Ehrenburg, protesting against the sentencing, nine months ago, of two well-known literary figures, Andrei Sinyavsky and Yuli Daniel, to terms of seven and five years, respectively, at hard labor in a work camp for having published satiric fantasies which the court considered “anti-Soviet.”

Burton Bernstein
When I read recently about the Studebaker Corporation’s decision to halt production of automobiles after sixty-four mercurial years, I felt a strange shiver of sadness— not particularly for the vanished fortunes of the Studebaker people, pleasant folk that I’m sure they are, but for a vanished fortune of my youth.

The fuss in New York this month concerns the departure of one Leonard Bernstein from steady employment as conductor of the Philharmonic. Esquire had an article about Maestro Bernstein already prepared when the news broke; with our deadline imminent, the author of the article, Martin Mayer, warmed up his typewriter and burned up the wires to get the scoop.

It is hard to imagine anyone reading these words who has not through one electronic medium or another heard some part of the work of Leonard Bernstein (see The Blinding Facility of Leonard Bernstein, page 64). The problem is that you can own dozens of Bernstein records and wonder what all the fuss is about, why anybody should be serious about such soppy and undisciplined conducting.

MALCOLM MUGGERIDGE
Choosing books for review is not as simple an operation as might be supposed. In the first place, there are one’s own particular interests and phobias, which by no means necessarily coincide with those of the general reader. Thus, for instance, I find books about British rule in India, crackpot religious teachers and Victorian homosexuals very much to my taste, whereas books about the late war, or Winston Churchill—yes, Randolph’s biography, the first volume of which (Youth, 1874-1900, Houghton Mifflin, $10) has recently appeared, with a splendid collection of photographs, but otherwise a yawn on every page—or N.A.T.O. hold my attention at best languidly. Is one to pursue one’s own interests or follow what purports to be the public taste? It is more a question of practicalities than of ethics.

As Weber pointed out, there are no sociological generalizations to which exceptions cannot be found. Consider the four beautiful maidens pictured here: they don't /oo/c over the h i 11, do they? No, they don't, and in fact they’re not. They know what it’s like out there, why it's so tough on chicks. Listen to them.

Among the most common elements in our environment, it is also one of the least understood. Recent findings indicate that it is not only useful to mankind, but also has a swell personality.

Established 11 A.D. February, 1984 Volume 9,853 Number 3 The mystery of mush is at last being penetrated, largely due to a grant from the National Slime Foundation. In an effort to categorize accurately a number of messy substances common to North America, the Foundation found itself faced with a nomenclature which confused rather than clarified.

HOW TO MAKE A RAT BATHE
Efforts to rid the slums of rats now seem destined for failure. As an alternative, scientists are turning to the possibility of making the rats clean up a bit and present a better appearance.

Burke N. Hare
Part of the price we pay for living in a cosmopolitan center like New York is the difficulty of living with the fact that some of our less-well-to-do neighbors are plagued by big rats. A topflight research scientist like myself is not troubled with the rodenta (“little devils”) but those foreigners across town are having one rotten time with them.

Gentlemen: I have a copy before me of the Colorado Springs Gazette Telegram dated May 24, 1964, sent to me by a friend in that city. My heart throbbed in excitement for my ambition from childhood was to write something worthwhile.
