Arnold Gingrich
Although we didn’t know it at the time, we really sounded the keynote of the current S.S.S. number of Esquire when we wrote, in one of these pages, away back in January ’64, that one of the paradoxes of this paradoxical age is that “the public arts have become private, and the private mysteries have become public.”

Having been born into a family so Republican it may as well have founded the Party; having gone through the transition from a decisive vote for Dewey to a hesitant vote for Eisenhower to a reluctantly renegade vote for Johnson; and having observed throughout that period such a decline in realistic (as opposed to pragmatic) thinking on the part of the Republican Party as to defy the imagination, I can only conclude (especially after reading your astonishing and dismaying article, The Best Republican for ’68, in the March issue) that the Republican Party is somehow being guided posthumously by Little People who grew up in a flower garden.

More Americans drive to Montreal than to any other big “foreign” city on earth, and more will be driving to Expo 67, next year’s Montreal World Exposition, than ever before. (You’ll find advance information on Expo 67 and on the new Montreal in Montreal: Super City, beginning on page 140.)

MARTIN MAYER
"During the Rachmaninoff competition,” Gary Graffman said the other day, talking about the perils of the young pianist and harking back to his own, loudly trumpeted professional introduction in 1947-8, “I played with two conductors, Ormandy and Reiner. Reiner never engaged me. Ormandy didn’t sign me until last year. The reason was that I played like a pig; I’m lucky there were only the two orchestras. This isn’t modesty, by the way. I have the recordings. I can play them for you.”

Howard Fast
The best things in life come too late, and what would have been high adventure to the small boy appears a little less than joyful to a bald and middle-aged man. When I was ten, I waved passionately and enviously each day at Locomotive No. 2 of the Ulster & Delaware Railroad—which was about a hundred miles of track in upstate New York, a family railroad as they were then called; not traveled by families in the meaning of the time but owned by a single family.

Jean Liedloff
The small furred thing that never was. April 19, Friday. Two p.m. Back in quarters. I came down before noon with a terrible pressure on my chest, pains in the deepest part of both ears and an almost unbearable sense of oppression. I came slowly down through the jungle, across the two poles which side by side serve as a bridge over a small dry brook, down through the cunuku, looking out over the tops of the houses, across the Canaracuni River, the jungle again, and the great purple hulk of Whedacuni Whih Mountains beyond.

It is my sad duty to destroy a gastronomic legend: pasta which is synonymous with Italy is not an Italian invention. Pasta comes from China, where it was known thousands of years ago, but under different names. Marco Polo—who else?—is said to have brought specimens of the delicious Chinese noodles to Europe, but if Polo had brought to Europe all the good things he’s been credited with he would have needed a ship the size of the Queen Elizabeth.

During the war I was interned by the Japanese in Haiphong Road Camp, Shanghai, the camp for hostages held by the Japanese Army. My wife was interned in another camp, five miles away. The Care of Devils (by Sylvia Press; $3.95, Beacon Press) first made its appearance in 1958, when it fell about as flat as a novel of its competence and topicality possibly can. This I find somewhat surprising in view of the fact that it provides, with a candor and authenticity I have not come across elsewhere, a blow-by-blow account of the interrogation of a suspected subversive in an American intelligence agency—clearly the C.I.A.—during the ill-omened McCarthy era.

The dirt road that had brought him up to the inn was intermittently visible for what he estimated as at least half a mile, a brown serpent hiding in a thick blanket of green. The sexual revolution is over. It ended the day—when four-letter words were used onstage? oral contraception hit the campus? maidens offered up their maidenheads before marriage so their husbands-to-be wouldn’t think they were square? heroes of novels were homosexual prostitutes? Well, it happened under our noses, in the full light of day and it is a revolution characterized by the overt with nothing unspoken, nothing hidden, in full public view where we watch each other perform and nothing that swings can shock. Even Henry Miller, the Old Man of the Sexual Liberation Front, finds himself, in the interview below, left far behind by the armies of free spirits who once followed him.
