THERE were three of us, and I though two of us worked in Chicago, we happened to be all together, for once, in our New York office. All three of us had begun as salesmen and had become advertising men, but for the past year we had been playing new roles, as editors and publishers, on a trade magazine in the field of men’s apparel.

From the Deep South, if Yankeeinfested Florida can be called the Deep South—more appropriately I feel it is a place “south” of Dixie-— a tip of the hat for Mr. William Melvin Kelley (The Ivy League Negro, August). As young, white and Baptist, to see clearly in the South one must weed through a thicket of cornponish politicians, pseudo intellects and even a certain segment of the Baptist group that claims segregation of the races is contrary to the Bible and God.

ROBERT ADAMS
THE way we live now—it’s a topic as urgent and interesting as it ever was, the only really inexhaustible topic in fiction; but if you try to form a general opinion from the current fiction output, schizophrenia will be the least of it. Editorial trumpets blew a loud brief blast for Charles Wright’s The Messenger, which came forth with a personal guarantee from James Baldwin that it was good goods.

DWIGHT MACDONALD
THE only point of interest about The Birds is that it’s by Alfred Hitchcock, who once had a deserved reputation as a master technician. If the director’s name had been, say, Albert Hotchkiss, I should have noted “tedious and amateurish . . . perhaps the most spectacularly untalented newcomer since Allen Baron,” and let it go at that.

It would not be worth saying Freud had an umbilical respect for the meanings of anxiety and dread if it were not that his disciples have reduced these concepts to alarm bells and rattles of malfunction in a psychic machine. Anxiety and dread are treated by them as facts, as the clashing of gears in a neurotic act.

THE weekend weather promises to be perfect and you decide that this is the time to get away from New York (or Boston or Philadelphia or Baltimore). You’re one of those people who likes the city during the summer weekends when it is at its deserted best and you have it almost to yourself.

MARTIN MAYER
As everybody knows who has ever been a parent (or a sergeant), the tone of voice in which a suggestion is made may be at least as important as the words m the message. Not many people realize, however, that the texture of a singing voice, rather than the intervals and quantities written in the score, can be the factor that governs their emotional reaction to a piece of vocal music.

“Jam yesterday, jam tomorrow, but never jam today,” remarked Lewis Carroll’s White Queen. (Or, as the Tom Swifties would have it, “remarked the Queen Whitely.”) Albeit rather loosely, her comment describes some features of this issue, which take the leap from yesterday (Josef von Sternberg’s musings on glamor as it used to be, page 90) to a discussion of New York’s 1964-65 World’s Fair which is indubitably tomorrow.

NOTHING happens overnight in fashions. Even the most startling innovations are months in the making, starting from the designer’s sketch pad until they reach the retail stores. If you know this, and you know where to look, you can always find out what new things are about to be sprung.

How much risk can a doctor ask a patient to take for medical science? The dilemma is as old as medical science. New procedures must be tried on people. That’s how medicine advances. But a medical procedure must be supervised by a physician who is professionally bound to take no risks whatsoever with any patient.

DEPRECIATING an automobile is one of the worst reasons for touring Italy I’ve ever heard of, but in Turin with a Car Thrown In on page 110, you’ll discover that you save one cent on the import duty of your foreign car for every mile you drive it—-after you’ve saved the cost of your transatlantic air fare by picking the car up in Europe—-so maybe this will prove to be an incentive.

In his high, slate-roofed Tudor house on a knoll in Darien, Connecticut, Charles Augustus Lindbergh, age sixty-one, woke early one morning recently and looked out the bedroom window. He noted the wind direction and force by the movement of the leaves and the waves of Scott’s Cove, and he scanned the clouds for the highaltitude winds and the probable weather.

Mom Art is what a lady painter named Anita Steckel calls these paintings of hers, quickly adding that they have nothing really to do with Pop Art. “It’s just a pun on the title,” she says, “and isn’t it funny that they used to call a movement Dada instead of Mama?” Maternal speculations to the side, what this purports to deal with is illusion and reality, what this claims to be is social commentary, and what it is supposed to do is shock.

There is a small but fanatical group of people who like to label things: galoshes, tools, photographic equipment, shelves, luggage, picture albums, boxes, cans, condiments. If something has a name, they reason, it should also have a label. So they cut up little strips of paper, type words, numbers or symbols on them, tear off pieces of cellophane tape, carefully affix them to the strips of paper, and finally place the completed labels on everything in sight.
