After January’s touch of Norman Mailer in Esquire (The Big Bite), I peeled open the February book avid for more of this strongarmed point of view. Whew! Greeting me were twelve pages of squirrel agate (Ten Thousand Words a Minute)—and discouragement for a hasty reading job in all ten thousand words!

The sheer joy of living in Ireland, if only for a vacation’s span
[no value]
[no value]
RICHARD JOSEPH
IN The Elegant Life (2/3 Off) which begins on page 62, we had space for less than one third of the story of Ireland’s bargains in luxury living—especially for the sportsman. Take fishing, for instance. We did manage to give it a passing mention in the lead piece—but on Esquire giving only a passing mention to fly fishing is one of the best things a writer can do to get himself fired.

DWIGHT MACDONALD
Cinema is the most ephemeral and fragile of the arts. Literature and music can last forever; sculpture and architecture can survive a long time. Paintings deteriorate, but not with the frightening speed of film stock; movies only thirty years old are lost because the prints have crumbled to bits, and many more would have perished except for the rescue operations of Eastman House in Rochester and The Museum of Modern Art Film Library.

If your blood pressure rises in the spring, if the sight and sound of surface-feeding fish stir you inside, if it is the challenge of stream problems and the solutions of some of them which is your reward, then it is time to appraise the trout situation.

MARTIN MAYER
COMPOSERS who mark the end of a line—whose work does not influence the more talented members of their immediate posterity—acquire their historic reputations only some time, after their deaths. The greatest example of this phenomenon, of course, is Sebastian Bach, who was fairly well known in his own lifetime (one did not get invited for nothing to the court of the King of Prussia), but promptly disappeared from view so completely that Mozart and Haydn never even heard the name until Baron von Swieten returned from Berlin with a few scores.

DWIGHT MACDONALD
The first issue of The New York Times appeared in 1851, but its real history began when it went bankrupt in 1896 and was bought, for $75,000, by Adolph Ochs, the publisher of The Chattanooga Times. Ochs was thirty-eight at the time. By the time he died in 1935, he had made the Times into a great newspaper and also a unique one.

The woman wore an orange scarf which she had so twisted around her forehead that it looked like a toque of the Twenties, and her voice bulldozed through all opposition the speech of her two companions, the young motorcyclist revving outside, even the clatter of soup plates in the kitchen of the small Antibes restaurant which was almost empty, now that autumn had truly set in.

In these times it’s possible, of course, to have a third car, a second home, color TV and a swimming pool, and still be somewhat out of the swim when it comes to measuring cleanly up to The Elegant Life. Fox hunting, salmon fishing, grouse shooting, castle partying and touring the countryside by limousine are more to the point—even though they’re far beyond the scope of most Americans.

As we told you it would last October, Brown has come out of the closet. Nowadays the well-dressed gentleman is wearing it all over: urban and suburban. Three citified versions are shown on these pages —they are grey browns, from jet brown to dusty brown.

The old light softies are back. Lemon, cream, pea green, grey—the whole range. You used to wear them, remember? It was five years ago that Olive swept in and knocked the lot of them out; brown went too. But this year there’s been a counterrevolution, and the softer, lighter shades have staged a comeback (so has brown, as you can see elsewhere in this issue).

ROBERT M. LIPSYTE
For the pure love of lagniappe (complicated only by anxiety, guilt and greed) 40,000,000 American families hoarded 375,000,000,000 snippets of colored paper in 1962. They licked them, pasted them in pamphlets, and swapped them for $800,000,000 worth of garish lamps, assorted novelties, and fourteen percent of all electric heating pads sold in the United States.

And what’s a ghillie? you might ask. With good reason too, because they haven’t been around much lately. A ghillie, then, is a shoe that has leather loops instead of eyelets, a motif derived from the heavy old Scottish ghillie (rhymes with dilly) shoes.

Not everyone who’s dreamed of having a yacht in the Mediterranean has a clear idea of what it would be like. The sailor who looks down on motorboats, for instance, is likely to be somewhat disappointed because in the Mediterranean it’s usually either very light airs or a mistral blowing up a gale.

With its worn grey paint, and its roof so warped that if you looked at the Inn sideways you could see the ends of the roof shingles curving into the air, pagoda style, it looked much older than it was.</p>

Jazz is not dying! It’s not even sick! Jazz, in itself, is as healthy as it has ever been, which is the reason why it has prevailed. I have heard jazz played in both saloons and salons. Good jazz can be performed, and/or listened to and enjoyed, in any building or any place outdoors, and does not have to be performed in a concert hall or on a theatrical stage.

QUITE a few years ago Victor J. Bergeron opened a restaurant in Oakland, California, and called it—after himself—Trader Vic’s.
