Arnold Gingrich
HOKE NORRIS of the Chicago Sun-Times, who has been on hand virtually every time and everywhere that we’ve held a Literary Symposium, wrote a column some while back about fiction in popular magazines, saying in part that “The stories float in a political, ideological, and religious vacuum, and make no adverse comment on middle-class morality and no comment whatever on controversial subjects.”

We were deeply disturbed over some remarks concerning Eastern Air Lines attributed to Joe Louis in Gay Talese’s otherwise excellent June article (Joe Louis: The King As A Middle-Aged Man) about the former heavyweight champion. Mr. Talese described Joe as feeling bitter toward Eastern for refusing him limousine service in 1946 from his hotel in New Orleans to the airport.

RICHARD JOSEPH
WE mentioned in The Connoisseur's Europe, which you'll find on page 98, that the valuable antiques and collector’s items of tomorrow are being made by the craftsmen of today, and we suggested that you might find some outstanding examples of modern design at the famed Scandinavian Design Cavalcade.

DWIGHT MACDONALD
LOLITA is a good movie which might have been much better. For the title role, Stanley Kubrick discovered a teen-age television actress named Sue Lyon whose moods, accent, facial expressions and body movements seem to me remarkably authentic—quite different from the clichés we usually get in such roles.

MARTIN MAYER
Among the many astonishing things about the Mozart catalogue is the originality and expressive content of the music he wrote for odd instrumerits or difficult combinations—the piece for glass harmonica, for example, the big Serenade for thirteen winds, the very beautiful Sonata for piano, viola and clarinet, the Quintet for piano and winds.

THE July issue of Esquire—all about women—is just to hand as we sit down to tap out these notes, so we’re understandably even more woman-minded than usual. Thinking about women, it occurred to us that you might be interested in a definitive piece on Women in the Air—women working for airlines, that is, in contradistinction to Dates, whose heads often are in the clouds, and Wives, who seem habitually up in the air about something.

IN 1939, Emily Shaw, who with her husband had been responsible for the dining departments of some of the finest private clubs in the East, decided it was time to go into business for herself. In the Twenties, and even in the Thirties, private clubs served some of the finest food obtainable in this country, and more than a few of the enormously wealthy men who were delighted with the Shaw cuisine would have been willing to back her in a restaurant that was convenient to their homes and offices in Manhattan.

A Magnificent Book on a Less-than-magnificent Time and Its People

DOROTHY PARKER
NICCOLÒ Tucci's enormous and enormously brilliant book, Before My Time, is the record of two of the most awful women yet to be set on paper. They are, respectively, the author’s grandmother and his mother; this is said here with an assurance based on the fact that the work is written in the first person and the ladies repeatedly referred to as “my grandmother” and “my mother,” and also because it seems incredible that these sitters could have been portrayed in such firm strokes against such a dazzling background of detail if they had been only fancy portraits.

There comes a time for every student, usually in the last two years, when he feels the impulse to bug out. Bugging out is a healthy action and it redeems the soul. It increases your stature on campus. It is good because it gives you the feeling of having said the hell with everything without ever actually saying the hell with everything.
