Magazine bites man? Your article on David Susskind was enlightening, but puzzling. Is this the same man who sits, week after week, grappling with the keenest minds of our time, frequently outshining them with his perception, his eloquence and his passionate (Susskind’s favorite word) involvement with human destiny?

The August issue had been in the hands of our subscribers only a few hours when we began getting the telephone calls. The first was from a very courteous man named Lewis, who phoned us from Yonkers, New York. He and some of the men in his office had been discussing Senator Stephen M. Young's Tarnished Golden Years (page 96), and they discovered a brighter tone than we admitted when we said:

DURING World War II, Budd Schulberg, who was serving with the O.S.S., happened to be on the scene about the time the American Army seized the Remagen Bridge over the Rhine. Watching the Allied Armies pour across that bridge was a most memorable event for Schulberg, and when he read Ken Hechler’s book, The Bridge at Remagen, he hurried to buy it with an eye to making a movie of it, which he and his brother Stuart plan to produce.

DWIGHT MACDONALD
ACCORDING to Variety, there are now five hundred and fifty “art” movie houses—there were just twelve in 1945—and the art circuit has become economically “interesting.” (An art house may be defined as one that shows serious films when it can’t get a Bardot.)

Looking for love? You'll find it in the bookstores

DOROTHY PARKER
IT is the striking feature of many new novels that their authors have hit, as one, upon the same subject. The subject is love, or, as certain vocalists pronounce it, lahve. Certainly love in any of its forms, from plain to transvestite, slips along the pages of countless works on other matters, but these recent books are out-and-out love and no fooling.

NAT HENTOFF
SOUL FORCE is a term used both by workers in nonviolent resistance movements and by jazz musicians. To the young jazzman, however, “soul” means earthiness rather than a weapon to disarm exploiters and developers of nuclear bombs. A musician’s “soul” credentials often include childhood exposure to Negro gospel music and always involve his capacity to play the blues with such authority that other musicians are moved.

Florida: here it's always season in the sun

IN ye oldynne dayes of like six or seven years ago, October in Florida was a time for getting ready for winter visitors and for battening down for hurricanes. Now, though, Alma, Becky, Claudia, Darlene and the rest of the short-tempered chorus of breezy young ladies have shown that they’re just as likely to blast away at any other part of the eastern United States after they’ve started their peeve somewhere in the Caribbean, so they mean little or nothing to the Florida vacation picture in the fall.

FOR anyone with any sort of feeling for motorcars, London is Mecca in the fall of the year. There is, in the first place, that matchless assemblage of cars at the Earl’s Court Motor Show, which this year is scheduled for September 23 to October 1.

OF all the strange phenomena in the record business (and there are lots and lots of them), perhaps the strangest and one of the pleasantest is a small, gentle man with silver hair, named Enoch Light. A student at the Salzburg Mozarteum many years ago and currently the possessor of one of the world’s most splendid violins, Light has spent most of his career as a band leader for movies and radio (Enoch Light and His Light Brigade), and was one of those most responsible for introducing “jazz” to Paris in the Twenties.

INTERESTING thing about the Democratic party is that it includes everyone, or at least gives them houseroom. Thus, Adam Clayton Powell Jr. drinks from the same water tap, so to speak, as Herman Talmadge; Mrs. Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Carmine DeSapio keep bumping into each other in the halls—and Frank Sinatra, Frankie boy (The King, Our Leader, The President of the Club) can be heard singing in the bathtub.

I think it was Somerset Maugham who said that if you want to eat well in England you should have breakfast three times a day. A bad meal in England is really dreadful: overcooked meats, unseasoned stews, oversalted sauces, watery vegetables, bad piecrusts, tepid dishes, dirty linen, disinterested service.

CLEVELAND AMORY
THE story of Vanity Fair, a magazine which we have attempted to anthologize in book form*, is, itself, as good a story as any the magazine ever published. There never was, nor in all probability ever will be again, a magazine like her. She was born in 1914, and she died in 1936, and, unlike the legendary gentleman of the Old School who was very good at wars but not very good between wars, the lady who was Vanity Fair was not very good at wars and Depressions, but between them, in the golden days of the Twenties, she was very good indeed.

IF you think television is bad at night, you ought to take a look at it in the afternoon. Between the soap operas and the master-of-ceremony shows, afternoon television presents a spectacle of stupefying mediocrity.

ARTHUR M. SCHLESINGER

IT was Topeka’s largest crowd and almost its hottest day: and now, at evening, after the long parade in the sweltering sun, the people stood under the floodlights before the State House, waiting cheerfully in shirt sleeves and summer dresses, eating sandwiches and ice cream, cooling themselves with fans shaped in the form of huge sunflowers.

Operating the Right and Left Eye Theory of Humor

MICHAEL BRAUN

A CLUE TO the means and ends of a couple of risibleniks named Mike Nichols and Elaine May may be gleaned from a comparison made recently by an admirer: “Michael is like the left eye and Elaine like the right; individually they’re fine, each with their separate point of view. It is when they are operating together, though, that the images fuse and the complete truth is seen.”

It’s getting cool, man ... there’s a nip in the air. Summer’s behind us and the fourth season is straight ahead, so get out the black tie and tails ... don’t forget the raccoon ... cause the social season and alma mater are about to kick-off.
