I should like to give you a few reflections on the literary fashions of our time—and to make a prediction thereupon—and I am going to leave you something to remember a few months hence or, at most, a few years hence.... I’m making the prediction that we are going to see a Puritanical Revolution in the literature of the whole world, and that the first indications of it are already discernible in France.

JAZZ
Billie Holiday: she remains, in 1959 as in 1939, superbly immediate
[no value]
[no value]
HAROLD HAYES
WHATEVER it is that constitutes the essence of jazz (and the prevailing attitude is that neither orchestration nor the lack of it, syncopation, nor even improvisation are in themselves sufficient to distinguish it from other forms of music; “jazz sound” is about as close as you can come), does this essence change with the times? Or is the “jazz sound” really a constant whose trappings alone change from time to time? And if this should be so, why is it possible that Billie Holiday, whose trappings haven’t changed at all, is as timely in 1959 as she was in 1939? Ellington, Hawkins, Eldridge, even the Minton musicians are timely because they have changed, or historically effective because they haven’t.

Riding the clouds to Rio and to those lovely castles in sunny Spain
[no value]
[no value]
RICHARD JOSEPH
BACK in 1946, Esquire’s first postwar travel story was on Brazil, and this writer flew down to Rio to cover it. The occasion was Pan American’s introduction of a new aircraft to the South American service—the huge, luxurious DC-4 which could carry about fifty-five passengers two hundred and thirty miles per hour at ten thousand feet.

KINGSLEY AMIS
HENRI-GEORGES CLOUZOT is probably best-known to American audiences for his suspense melodramas, Wages of Fear and Diabolique, which in their different ways kept the spectator nearer the edge of his seat than he had been for a decade: I have never known of a more justifiable heart attack than that suffered by the girl in Diabolique when her murdered husband got up out of the bath and came at her.

DOROTHY PARKER
As time crashes on, writers keep getting younger. It seems to me that every time I turn my back, up pops a new novelist—they are all novelists —of even fewer years than his or her, especially her, immediate predecessors. It has been like that with me ever since the day I looked away for a moment, and when I turned around, there was Françoise Sagan.

So the president of the CBS network holds what is, by extension, the biggest job in the glamorous world of broadcasting, advertising and so forth.

THERE are more beautiful cars to be seen on the highways of the world today than there have been since the mid-1930’s. Almost full credit for this can be taken by a relatively small group of men— the Italian coach designers and builders, who employ only around 10,000 men, all told.

WITH the jets spearheading the propulsion of a record number of Americans to Europe this summer, escapists and other seekers of the off-trail will have to go further afield than ever to lose the crowds and discover the offbeat. Although they are clear off the continent of Europe, stuck out in the Atlantic about 655 miles from Spain, about seventy-five miles off the northwest coast of Africa, near Morocco, the Canary Islands are so easy and convenient to get to from Madrid that they fall readily into the itinerary of any visitor to Spain with more than a week or so at his disposal.

(To Abner Klang, New York) October 1 Dear Abner, This morning I sent off to you air mail a four-pound play in one marathon act, which I call Boswell’s Manhattan journal. Notify me of its arrival. I hope it doesn’t bore you, although I don’t in the least demand nor expect that you will read it.

There was a time (long, long ago) when people sent each other cards only in celebration of a specific occasion, but today there are cards to express almost every idea and emotion visited upon man. Herman Curzon and Arthur Bernstein, the owners of Curzart, have long been leaders in the field of unusual and tasteful cards.
