I Killed Stalin, by Sterling Noel. Condensed from a full-length novel. Bu-X gave him a name, and the underground gave him a date, and the Red Tsar was in his gunsight when the Soviet bombers struck. Them Marines, by William J. Lederer. A Navy commander takes an international tour, follows our proud professional fighters from recruiting station to battlefront, and finds out how the hell they got that way.

The big Ken Murray Show brings the 1952 Esquire Calendar Girls to the TV screen
[no value]

ONE of the most enlivening TV frolics in recent months was brought to the nation’s screens over CBS-TV when Ken Murray built his regular Saturday show around the Esquire Calendar Girls. This was pleasant news to us, and, as a matter of fact, became increasingly so, when Murray— who acts as producer, stage director, star, music critic, camera impresario, dance master, wit, and host, among other things, while rehearsing—ran some of our Esquire people into his cast.

IN the matter of drinking, few sages are wiser than H. L. Mencken, who remarked that “No man is genuinely happy, married, who has to drink worse whiskey than he used to drink when he was single.” Such a comment, probably, is one that only a man can fully comprehend.

IN burlesque and in vaudeville, on real stages and on sound stages, Bert Lahr has been a professional funnyman for more than forty of his fifty-six years. He was the dreamy keeper of the powder room in Du Barry Was a Lady; the outdoors baritone in The Woodchopper’s Song (“A woodsman’s life is the life for me in an all-wool shirt ’neath an all-wood tree”*); the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz.

THERE are some men who can fix anything from a mouse-trap to a television set unassisted. In medical crises they can perform everything but a major operation. At the opposite pole are the congenitally helpless. When a gadget goes a bit haywire they phone a repairman.

IT’S a long jump from the bucolic counties of Ohio to the gaudy hippodromes of 52nd Street, but Earl Wilson made it. That didn’t surprise us much—Mr. Wilson is the man who climbed Pike’s Peek —but sometimes we wonder how an untrained farm boy can stand the gaff.

THE mink is a vicious beast; he bites the hand and he bites the wallet. He doesn’t even love his fellow mink; put his mate in his cage on the wrong day and all the two can think about is war. But if you really love minks the way Saks-Fifth Avenue loves minks (Saks, as you see, gives them diamond collars) there may be some profit in it.

"NO one should live in a cellar,” says an old respected convention. Yet, today, many families are living in basements and finding them top hole. MADELEINE'S, 48 East 53rd St. After fifteen years on East 52nd Street, Madeleine Beakhurst has moved her intimate and charming bistro to new, mirrored and cheerful quarters, somewhat larger than the original place. Bar is excellent, service is good, the place is crowded nightly, open until 4 in the morning.
