Every so often somebody writes us a letter anticipating one of our next-scheduled moves, reading our minds so perfectly we wonder if they haven’t been reading our mail. But this latter suspicion is out of the question in the case of Pfc. Frank Kinkaid, who wrote us on July 7 from far out in the Pacific, before he could have seen either the August or September issues, to say nothing of the still further “re-converted” issue you are now holding in your hands.

WE MUST ask your indulgence this month for turning this page into a personal communication. For the past twelve years our use of the first person plural pronoun on this page, in short the editorial “we,” almost invariably has been both corporate and collective, speaking for the magazine as a whole, and for all the people behind it.

Have just finished reading the article in May, “Jimmy Doolittle: American Eagle,” by Paul Gallico. Just for the records. I happened to run across a Kraut who was down in Chile when Lt. General Doolittle was selling planes down there, and just two days before I read the article, this Kraut told me the story of that flight Doolittle made with both his feet in casts.

IN APRIL, 1906, the city of San Francisco was enjoying a period of extraordinary prosperity. Business had never been so brisk; real estate sales were booming; population was increasing with wonderful rapidity. On Tuesday evening, April 17, Caruso, in Carmen, thrilled the packed Opera House.

THE heat was on at Appalachian State Teachers’ College, tucked away among the folds of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains at Boone, North Carolina. Eight games had been reeled off without a threat from the opponents; it wasn’t until the fifth game of the season that an opposing team made so much as a first down against the team coached by Kidd Brewer.

George Hurrell, whose photographs of cinema stars at ease on leopard skin rugs are preferred in some circles to Whistler’s Mother, turns his lens to a new subject, men’s fashions. Specifically, his theme is color in sportswear. The jacket is a smoothfinish tweed, showing the new screenweave Glen plaid with brown and natural tone threads.

Tradition suggests, for example, that sauterne, Rhine or Chablis wines blend with seafood, chicken or white meat, while claret, burgundy or cabernet enhance red meats and wild fowl.
