Read your May magazine, referring to article by James W. Burke; I think this piece is what every instructor, Army and Navy man and every C.A.A. man should read. They won’t like it because it is the gospel truth, in most points. I am an Army instructor and believe that all of the cadets can fly, provided the Army will give them enough time; and when the slower ones do learn, they soon pass up the ones who learned fast.

IT’S a little late for guests at Riverside Drive’s hump-perched Claremont to clink luck to Robert Fulton’s steamboat which he named after it. In fact, they’ve missed the boat entirely and don’t seem to care, for there’s dancing both indoors and out, to two bands, and the eats are as sustaining as the drinks ...

While the lift WILLIAM THEODORE CAMPBELL got from his sale of The Dare-Devil's Last Jump to this magazine was chiefly a moral one, it inspired this reminiscence: “Once I was drilling a well in Oklahoma. I had nursed myself and a bride of a few months through a ghastly epidemic of duds.

IN his civilian seersucker suit, Sam Robbins felt low. Just because of a shell splinter in his shoulder and a few ribs knitted in a queer way, the Navy had forced an honorable discharge on him when he didn’t want it and had set him ashore. Home in Colusa, baking in the Florida sun, Sam diffidently approached the county courthouse.

STANLEY BAUMGARTNER
CONNIE MACK, veteran presidentmanager of the Athletics and one of the keenest analysts of the diamond, recently predicted several astounding changes in baseball after the war. The eighty-one-year-old patriarch prophesied the downfall of the Yankee dynasty; the failure of such stars as Joe DiMaggio, Bob Feller, Sam Chapman and Ted Williams to regain their old form when they return, and the growth of an entire new set of heroes from the thirteento seventeen-year-old boys of today.

STAGE and screen have firmly fixed the type of the boss newspaper man: a loud, tough, shirtsleeves guy, always in stormy motion, his wild eyes flashing lightning from under a green eyeshade. But the greatest news editor of them all was, even in his vigorous prime, a quiet little man with a small, dry voice who didn’t move out of his chair unless he had to—which was seldom enough.

The big questionalwaysis:“What’re the odds?” Your gambler studies the cards as an insurance underwriter studies his rate book. In any game you must know the answers to two questions before you can calculate your chance of winning.

THIS country rolled into the distance with a reaching quality that brought to a man’s eye the farseeing look of an Indian astride his pony on a hilltop, of a captain on the bridge of his ship. It was country the Indians loved, where they killed buffalo and packed the meat on dog travois over prairies that rolled in the heat-shimmer like a lumpy sea.

GEORGES SURDEZ
CAPTAIN Hardtberg hung up his damp coat and cap in the hallway, entered the living room. He was about thirty-six, tall, red and fleshy, with small, placid blue eyes set deep, like little porcelain globes. He motioned for his host, Monsieur Breguel, to remain seated, sank into an easy chair opposite the white-haired Frenchman, grunted and sighed, rubbing his hands.
