LIFE around this factory of fun and frivolity was anything but funny or frivolous for the first few days after the appearance of our August issue. It seems that one of our Cheekpayers in that number, putatively good for “one free drink at the nearest bar,” turned out to be good for nothing but an irate letter dropped in the nearest mailbox.

I have just read the article about me in your August issue and write you not as a “200 pound kitten” but as a furious wildcat. The reason for this insensate rage (actually, I am almost irked) is that Woodrow Wirsig, the author, combined two anecdotes in one and created a very false impression.

MUCH BROADWAY history had to move over when Marden-Rivieran Joe Howard (born on this side of the bridge) moved into the attic of the Winter Garden, naming his invasion the Café Zanzibar and doing a well-nigh Amgot job of improvements. For punctual arrivers whose friends are tardy, he has installed a fidget-curing station known as the Safari Bar, and on the wall opposite the bandstand (where Don Redman’s toot ensemble alternates with a rumba outfit) he’s clapped a grand new mural which we could describe better if we hadn’t sat whack up against it, finding the blonde at the next table more ganderable (curse that guy she was with!).

THIS Fall will see men turning out like pioneers to protect themselves, their livestock and crops against rapacious rabbits, ferocious pheasants and dangerous deer. This is more than a joke, as anyone who has tried to garden in deer and rabbit country can testify; but the point is that such self-protection is now the only pretext upon which a person can get ammunition for hunting.

THOSE who knew them at their flood said the bison herds of the American plains were the greatest wildlife spectacle ever seen by man. Travelers who have crossed Africa claim first rank now for the vast game herds of the veldt. Let me nominate, for a place among the great wild brute spectacles, the Steller sea lion herd of Bogoslof Island as you see it from the deck of a small ship reeling in through the long summer groundswell of the Bering Sea.

THE long, curving land bridge of the Aleutian Islands thrusts 1,100 miles west from the North American mainland. Unimak, first of the islands, is incredibly, vividly green in summer from its soft, thick carpet of moss and grass. Timber disappeared far back on the bald, snow-covered Alaska peninsula but on Unimak belts of thick tangled alder mark the course of the snow-fed streams down the hillsides and across the rolling meadows.

And our civilian friend seems to appreciate this as he wistfully fingers the decorations on the chest of the Marine officer.
