We have a letter from Paul Haggard which he wants published in our pages either in full or not at all. It was addressed to The Sound and the Fury, but that overcrowded department is already creaking under the load of problems we have piled onto it this month, so if we are to print Paul Haggard’s letter at all it will have to come in here where we always seem to have room for anything and everything.

I would like a little more enlightenment on Earle V. Weller’s article entitled One, Two, Three . . . and Win Six, appearing in the January, 1940 ESQUIRE. My first question is where did the number “7” come from in the first example described by Mr. Weller? I can follow the playing and reasoning up to number “6” in the series or in other words, until the gambler is ready to make his fifth bet of eight chips.

FISH STORY. It has been said that the barometer is “an ingenious invention which tells what kind of weather we are having right now”. Here is one that goes a bit further than that — telling the angler whether or not the fish are running today. Get a fisherman’s barometer and tell a better fish story than your neighbor . . . and just to make sure, you really ought to have a good reel.

The de luxe performers of stage, screen, and radio who do their stuff nightly at the Versailles (151 East 50th) are just so much parsley to chef Alfred Lagrange as he presides over his subterranean kingdom where the simmer of casseroles and the sizzle of steaks is to him the most exquisite music in the world.

Our Florida gadabout, Ralph Pierson, reports that there are so many new hostelries down there that he falls over them, even without a drink. Miami Beach has had the greatest hotel building boom in its history—over fifty new palacios rushed to completion during the past Summer and Fall to take care of the influxers arriving daily on Silver Meteors, Orange Blossom Specials and what not.

To watch headwaiter Jules of La Belle Meunière (12 East 52nd) carve wafer-thin slices of smoked Nova Scotia salmon is to behold fastidious virtuosity such as this restaurant is a headquarters of. A touch of olive oil, a black flurry from the pepper-mill, and a glass of dry Sherry for companionship, and you and your salmon are atuned.

SOME time ago a well-known French playwright who had worked in Hollywood for a number of years decided to return to Paris. Are We Becoming Paranoid?
In this enlightened era we know our neighbors more intimately than ever before and yet intolerance increases

LYNDON BABCOCK
ONE of the most interesting types of mental disorder is paranoia, or the “reasoning insanity,” usually characterized by delusions of persecution. There are several forms, but they vary chiefly in degree, from the mild paranoiac, who is so nearly normal that he passes unnoticed, to the paranoid schizophrenic* whose ravings against his imagined persecutors make him one of the most dangerous and hopeless of mental patients.

IT is unlikely that many can recollect with accuracy the first time they met love; or that they could trace again the lineaments of the beloved on that occasion, the expression in her eyes, the way she walked, the clothes she wore. They may say they can, but this is because the memory of events immediately subsequent to that meeting has rendered them maudlin.

PARKE CUMMINGS
OUR only quarrel with the numerous polls on public opinion is that they are almost exclusively concerned with questions of a transitory nature. It is all right to know how people feel about the third term, neutrality, and double features, but ten years in the future these all may be dead issues.

“SOOP, mon, soop,” the doctor had ordered. “Ye’ll get to know the zip and the thrill of it. It’ll do ye good.” There had been warning that he was an unorthodox man of medicine. His bland chuckle at ordering a previous patient to stoke the furnace and find health among the clinkers confirmed it.

Bohrod: Chicago’s Gift to Art

HARRY SALPETER
AARON BOHROD is an artist with many distinctions. Beginning with the least of them, he is the only painter of merit and prestige to confess that he ever tried to study art by correspondence school and actually learned a little that way. His greater distinction, however, lies in that he is Chicago’s most nationally known gift to art, the one young painter who came to the big picture town called New York without stirring from the city of his birth and breeding.

DOLCEMENTE.—Sentiment, the last remaining despairful refuge of the pessimist in the modern world, has again after years of intellectual ostracism come into its critical-theatrical own. MARCH is a great month for country racing. They hold hunt races all over both of the Carolinas, which gives you an idea. All right, you're not interested. Could we interest you, then, in some brand new tweeds? They're very nice—that frisky topcoat number at the left, for instance.

HERE’S a right smart collection of checked tweed topcoats—forerunners of the sports trend for spring. All are correct for wear in town or country, as well as for traveling. At upper left is a single breasted fly front peak lapel tweed coat in two-button style with lapel rolled to the waistline. This is a brown cheviot with colorful Glen pattern, and comes only two inches below the knee.
