As this month’s Sound and Fury Department shows, Esquire has shows, Esquire has again demonstrated its preeminent ability to lose friends and alienate people. In the August issue we permitted a returned American tourist to tell the world what he thought of the New Italy.

This is written in August, to achieve print in mid-September. As it is written, what has cynically been known for the last two years as world peace is even less peaceful. The Japs are still trying as bloodily as ever to make the Chinese feel friendly toward them, Franco is still using Mohammedan Moors as missionaries in an endeavor to Christianize Spain, while Russians and Japs are using tanks, artillery and planes in a determined effort to preserve the peace on the Manchukuan frontier.

OH MANN, OH MANN! The article, The New Italy, by Kenneth Mann, published in your August number, has left me disgusted, for his unfairness and calculated hostility not only to fascism and Mussolini, which is his privilege, but also to Italy as a Nation, against which I protest.

HUMIDOR BRANCHES OUT. If you are looking for a new cigarette box which will startle your friends, the “spreading” humidor will do the trick. Raise the cover, and 20 cigarettes lurch out at you, like the branches of a tree, and as easy to grab. Press down the top, and they disappear inside the handsome confines of the fluted container.

SHORT CUT TO KNOWLEDGE. Not enough that a guy struggles through a semester, cramming his cranium full of facts and stuff. The present mania for “quiz” games carries mental acrobatics into social life. So if you want to be the bright boy who can explain “the origin of the igneous rock,” or “name the man who invented the idea of aircraft driven by a propeller with rotating blades” ... a peachy reference book condenses 12 volumes of encyclopedias into one.

NEWS FOR SHAVERS...LITTLE AND BIG. Manufacturers are certainly doing their best to make the daily grist of mowing the map an easier and quicker performance. Blade users will welcome one of those little box-like sharpeners which will condition any double edged blade for at least a couple of hundred perfect shaves.

THE possibility of being challenged to a duel in the United States seems to be quite remote in these days. I am glad of that. For, as I understand it, the traditional American duel was decidedly a dangerous business. The American duellist went to the ground with the serious expectation of killing his opponent, or being killed by him.

THE old countess was a little, thin woman, small as a moth. She had cross-eyes, a limp, rheumatism, of years more than ninety-nine; and still she was incessantly smiling, drawing her eternal mirth from some unknown stratum of the human soul. The garden was full of summer scents; the red and white striped awning of the terrace glared in the sunshine; wasps were flitting above the breakfast table around the cream, the sugar, the butter.

Do YOU know a candid camera nut? I don’t mean just a fellow who clicks pictures and then lets someone else develop and print them, but a real nut, who goes all the way? Do you know some fellow who is an enthusiastic stamp collector? Do you know a fly fisherman who makes his own flies?

HUNTINGTON HARTFORD
FOR years I had the hazily romantic notion that I wanted to sail in a square-rigger. How grand it would be, I dreamed, to bowl over the seas in the wake of such swaggering adventurers as Morgan and Red Legs, Black-beard and Dampier; to ride my horse on deck, and drink a health in gunpowder and salt water; to line up all my enemies and make them walk the plank; to maroon whichever of my crew I found obnoxious to me; to capture many an iron-studded casket full of doubloons and moidores and pieces of eight, and having melted them down for safety’s sake, to fill the hollow masts of my ship with ever-flowing molten gold.

<p>THE British film industry counts today. And this is a pretty new thing. Ten and even five years ago it scarcely ranked. Serious and massive books discussing the picture-making business could be and were written in which whole chapters would be devoted to even the modest efforts of Czechoslovakia, Austria, Japan and Hungary, let alone the United States, France, Germany and the Soviet Union, while the quantitatively important production of Great Britain would be disposed of with a contemptuous paragraph, as artistically non-existent and commercially insignificant.</p>

You can’t say they’re not asking for it. “Down in front!” There—we feel better now. The man on the left wears a single breasted overcoat with fly front and notch lapels. The moral of this model, first sighted at the Grand National in England, is the two-button front, a fashion feature which makes for a lower opening and thus gives a more breath-taking view of the shirt and tie or the scarf.

THE treachery of the art department passes all belief. As if it weren’t enough work to describe two whole outfits, they deliberately spill the contents of a suitcase all over the place just to make it tougher. We’ll fool ’em. In line of duty, we report that the man on the left, a student by trade, is wearing a short length fly front covert coat, blue unfinished worsted suit, blue “pic and pic” shirt, white ground Spitalfields tie, bowler hat, black calf shoes, and buckskin gloves.

IT’S always later than you think. Which pretty well covers the predicament of these belated night-clubbers but which, unfortunately, seems to get us nowhere. Taking a more direct tack, the man at the left is about to wear a blue fly front topcoat and is wearing an unfinished worsted suit in a two-button single breasted peak lapel model—very Londonish with its red and white striped black ground fabric and its dressy cut.
