It has now and again been suggested that this space has too often been put to purposes of bragging. Remembering how we have so often used it up with coy remarks about the rapid and sustained growth of ESQ’S circulation, and about the arm load of magazine money’s worth we give you every month including the summer, and about how the advertisers could come in if they felt like it but would have to sit quietly on the side-lines and never try to start running the readers’ show, and about what fair-haired boys our Discoveries of the Month are and what Big Names we’ve bagged to stuff and mount and display on our Table of Contents listing due north of this space... remembering all that, we’re inclined to agree that perhaps we have beaten our chests too often in this space.

I had about made up my mind that I would not buy another copy of ESQUIRE because of its utter lack of versatility. Each copy is exactly like the preceding one. The ignorant and offensive article by Lawrence Martin entitled A Report on Man's Best Friend clinched the matter.

“LONG LIVE THE KING” Coronation... Coronation... Coronation! The coffers of the current English king would overflow and dam the Thames could they but collect “royalty” on “Coronation” items sold in America alone. The tea tax of another George that upset the pot in Boston was a mere drop in the harbor compared to the million dollar business being done in the name of the present George.

JOHN MARSTON
TWISTED trees, unroofed homes scattered over acres of plastered-down corn, bloating dead cattle, showed a plain trail from the air where the tornado had sliced through miles of rich Iowa farmland. Farmers counting their losses ducked as a fast red plane swooped low... caught a glimpse of an aerial camera bobbing from a window, snapped by an expert pilot while flying.

To write only of the excellent food of Perona Farms is to miss half the story. The thing is an American saga of the immigrant and what he can do in a hospitable land. The Farms are four miles out of Andover, New Jersey. Crossing the Washington Bridge perfect roads ribbon their way over pleasant hills.

EDWARD J. FITZGERALD feels that his biographical data follows pretty much the pattern expected of poets. He graduated five years ago from the University of Vermont. Since then he’s been a truck loader, worked in department stores, and in an insane asylum, been business manager of a repertory theatre and assistant editor of a poetry magazine.

MAN’S natural chastity has always been an aggravation to women. Eve of Eden had the initial experience with this vexation, it is said, when Adam acted like a shrinking lily on the first evening they spent together. Dido, antiquity’s No. 1 torch singer, was so upset when she found Aeneas couldn’t be sidetracked, that she turned on the heat after he had gone rather than before.

ON THE autumn nights when Fred Billings used to meet his pal, Herrman Neuman, at Madison Square before they went on uptown together, he used to see a young girl in a belted coat and long bobbed hair crossing slowly on the path by the fountain, or, if it was still light enough, stopping a while to feed the flock of pigeons.

CERTAIN sections of the estimable British press have lately been working themselves into a lather over my comments on the surplusage of English actors in America. By way of making the lather more foamful and creamy they have permitted themselves various misquotations and distortions, and have persuaded their readers that I am not only an enemy of British dramatic art (which they presumably and peculiarly seem to view as an existing fact) but that I am, further and by implication, responsible for the late Congressional imbecilities of Mr. Dickstein, the potential reprisals of the American Actors’ Equity Association and the recent Hollywood mortal heart stroke of Sir Guy Standing, to say nothing of the failure of Love From a Stranger and other such great English dramatic masterpieces and the indisposition of the Lotus Club to give banquets to visiting London actors oftener than twice a week.

GO ALONG TO SEE MAYTIME: A smoothly agreeable operetta, with John Barry-more showing up in good form after all his trouble.
