On page 40 of this issue we shriek Eureka louder than we have yelled it at any time in the last three years. Every month we’ve shouted “Discovery,” and sometimes twice in the same month, and every time we’ve meant it. We’ve meant, that is to say, that we have discovered, among the month’s five hundred or so of manuscripts from unpublished authors, one that we considered publishable both as a performance and as a promise. But this month, with no disrespect to all our Discoveries of these past three years, we find ourselves wishing for a stronger word with which to introduce the first published writing of Pietro di Donato, an almost incredibly talented young Italian bricklayer lately turned author.

RICHARD L. NEUBERGER
EIGHT years ago the most publicized marriage ever to titillate the tabloid-addicts took place at the estate of Dwight W. Morrow in Englewood, New Jersey. Every feature of the event was blazoned across the front pages. All persons blessed with vision, and gifted with the ability to read, knew what the bride, Miss Anne Morrow, ate for breakfast, and approximately how many drops of sweat glistened on the brow of the groom, Colonel Charles A. Lindbergh.

Torso, the Tenth Muse
Murders may seem exciting to you but to a writer of headlines they are boringly alike
[no value]
[no value]
R. B. SULLIVAN
MURDER often is called an art, and from the discerning pens of such as Edmund Pearson, world’s foremost authority on the Fall River Horror, it often so emerges. So much has been written of murder, in veins analytical, psychological and polemical, and sometimes for sheer horripilating effect, that there might be added to the nonet of Muses one of Murder, resembling, let us say, a Gorgon, her herpetic locks writhing in gouts of blood and her crimson lips fleering in a hoyden grin.

WHEN a major-league baseball-club manager contemplates a purchase or trade of players he estimates the value of the “ivory” he is about to acquire or discard strictly in the light of what batting averages indicate as to each player’s offensive power and what fielding averages have to say on the issue of value on defense.

JOSEPH FELDMAN
OLIN JENNINGS had certain charms which none of the thousand odd males of the white town of Eastchester, Vermont, fully appreciated. But the fourteen women to whom an extraordinary thing was to happen considered him a man of rare parts. Not that Olin liked women.

The Idiot in Cell 33
Life in the prison walls was an empty thing, told, quite truly, by an idiot

JON EDGAR WEBB
IT WAS two-thirty in the morning and the idiot in cell 33, the end cell on range five, was sitting at the foot of his bunk rolling a cigarette in the dark. Every morning, between two and three o’clock, the idiot would wake up craving a smoke. He would turn over on his back and lie perfectly still for several minutes, staring up into the darkness above him.

YESTERDAY Bernard Karfiol began painting for tomorrow so that today he has come, so to speak, into the middle of his recognition. This is to state the position of Karfiol with caution and decorum and in deference to the natural ignorance of the public, for which the artist himself is partly to blame, of the place which he holds in the esteem of artists.

THE rear view of the jacket in the foreground is of interest because it shows the extreme amount of fullness at the shoulder blades on each side. This is the London innovation now accepted by the majority of the best tailors in this country. This coat is cut in the new cubbing model, resembling a riding coat, with a long center vent and slanting flap pockets.
