JAMES M. REID '24
"My hardships were excessive," said Joseph Vaill, Class of 1778, who toiled away his student days working in the College-owned sawmill and then, utterly mortified. graduated $20 in debt. Vaill's account was in the October issue. As the College matured, so did the students' grasp of economics. Here, James M. Reid '24 reveals how laissez faire capitalism worked in his day. In spite of his promise as a robber baron, Reid became a textbook editor and in 1935 escorted Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas to the Yale game. His description of that singular event ("they were fascinated by the huddles") appeared in the November 1974 issue.
