If there is any single issue of this magazine I've ever worked on that I would consider "my baby," the Handbuilt Issue is it. I’ve always liked getting my hands dirty, and, as a working writer, there is nothing more wonderful than starting with a blank sheet of paper.

After reading the April 2016 issue, I must say I can’t take it anymore! The flat-black paint job trend needs to stop. On bikes, cars, hot rods, and everywhere. Our eyes have six million cones in them for a reason-wake up people. In color! JEFF WILKENING ELK RIVER, MW

Triumph has been producing a bike called a Tiger since 1937 or so, and while it has morphed a lot over that time, it has always had an adventurous travel quality. Ted Simon wrote Jupiter’s Travels about his ride around the world on his Tiger, so one could understand if Triumph didn’t want to take any risks with such an iconic name.

I am clearly amongst the first group and have been wearing various brands of knee braces for 15 years. With multiple companies making high-quality motocross-/off-road-specific braces these days, finding well-made, protective units isn’t that difficult.

When Sylvester H. Roper attached a small steam engine to an iron-frame "boneshaker" bicycle near Boston in the late 1860s, he had no idea Guillaume Perreaux was fitting a micro-steamer to a pedal-velocipede at the same time in Paris. Kevin Cameron and I disagree on their species; he calls them “steam cycles,” but I think any motorized two-wheeler that delivers yeehaw is a motorcycle.

The first Norton Commando I ever kickstarted was the Kenny Dreer-built, alloybodied VR880 that graced our September 1999 cover. I’ve been scarred ever since. It was then, and remains now, one of the great motorcycle experiences of a long and varied riding career and directly resulted in buying my own low-mileage original 1974 850 Commando.

If the devil lives in the details, this Yamaha-powered Norton "Clubman" special built by Northern California's Paul Adams must be totally possessed. Exquisitely crafted with various leftover parts from 1950s and ’60s Nortons that Adams had restored over the years—plus a 1985 Yamaha FJ600 engine found at a motorcycle wrecker—it quite literally represents what the storied English firm might have built if it had not fallen on hard times 60 years ago.
