MARK HOYER
My idea of essential gear on longer motorcycle rides has changed quite a bit over the years. There was a time when I'd wear an open-face helmet and sunglasses for a 500-mile day, that I wouldn't take a sleeping bag to camp overnight in mild weather (sleep in the Aerostich, right?) and that I didn't carry stuff to fix a flat.

"Superbikes with Soul" (June) was just mind-blowing, beyond awesome, beyond anything I've read anywhere in the last decade. Freddie Spencer is one of my childhood heroes (in addition to Kevin Schwantz, Eddie Lawson and Wayne Rainey), and I've grown up lusting after and wanting almost every one of the bikes mentioned in the story While I've never ridden an RC300 or a ZX-7R or an OW-01,I continue to dream of these bikes and look at pics and read stories like this one.

THE OFFICIAL ANIMAL of Scotland is the unicorn, which says so much. And out here in the castle-strewn Highlands, you'd almost expect to see one raise its fabled white head from the velvety grass. It might even be less of a surprise than seeing a pack of Tigers charging out of the woods, all whoops and wagging tails.

Andrew Bornhop
AT THE PRESS RIDE for the new CB500F, Honda PR maven Jon Seidel slung the superlatives like a pro, calling the bike affordable, attractive and cool, just the thing to get more people riding again. You know what? He's right. The naked CB500F, along with its mechanically similar siblings, the sporty CBR500R and ADV-look CB500X, is refined and easy to ride, great for commuting but by no means a slouch on twisty canyon roads.

THE INITIALS tell the story. With the F800ST that BMW has been building since 2007, the "ST" stands for "sporttouring." But for 2013, the boys in Bavaria redesigned the 798cc ST to provide less of the "S" and more of the "T," then rebadged it "GT" for "grand touring."

The big question surrounding Suzuki's return to MotoGP next year has two parts. Why did a company famed for its transverse inline-Fours go GP racing with V-Fours, and why switch to an inline engine for next year? There are sub-questions, as well, which is why we had an illustrator modify this spy photo of the new MotoGP Suzuki, adding GSX-R-like graphics, a muffler and rain-grooved tires.

2014 YAMAHA YZ450F ALL-NEW, STILL BACKWARD

Ryan Dudek
Let's face it, Yamaha's YZ450F has gotten a bad rap. Blame James Stewart's less-thanstellar results on the bike in 2012 prior to his leap to Suzuki, combined with slanderous comments on Internet forums. But guess what? The "backward" design is back, and Yamaha's engineers, led by Mr. Hiroshi Ito (WR450F project leader, too) still believe in the rearward-leaning cylinder with intake at the front and exhaust at the rear.

TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE
PANNING FOR GOLD ON SIX OF THE SWEETEST SPORTBIKES OUT THERE
[no value]
[no value]
John Burns
Right, we actually rode these six great motorcycles all over the Sierra Nevada Mountains, but there's no Humphrey Bogart film named that. And we didn't really want to go to Mexico, where the real Sierra Madres are: Who needs to deal with banditos when we knew we'd have our hands full avoiding our home-grown federales? Like Bogey's character in that classic film, we're cheapskates in search of not just treasure, but real everyday value and usability—so we went for the base model of each bike whenever we could. Further, we included bikes of varying displacement to more deeply examine the performance-perdollar equation.

True, an MV Agusta is no motorcycle for a tightwad, but the new base model F4, at a mere $17,498, is a smoking deal at $2k less than last year's F4R. One-hundred sixty-five horsepower seems like enough nearly all the time, and we don't need the Ti rods and electronic Öhlins suspension of the $24,998 F4RR to get to the mine every day.

Speaking of highly evolved, the original CBR600F got here right on the heels of the first GSX-R750, circa 1987, and Honda has been chipping steadily away at it ever since. In all those years, while some 600s went racier and some went streetier (and some OEMs just built two 600s when buyers were thick on the ground), Honda always kept to its "big umbrella" theme with the CBR, building a bike that could hold its own on the track while never losing sight of the fact that this machine would be transportation for most of its owners. All three of the other Japanese brands now offer racier 600s, none of which are quite as street-friendly as this latest CBR.

Even though it's in the middle of the range sizeand weight-wise, the CBR, for some reason, just seems a tad more spacious and substantial, and running along the superslab at 80-ish, the CBR's requisite Showa Big Piston Fork and new "balance-free" shock do smooth work.

Everybody who climbs aboard knows this one's the alpha motorcycle, verging on overkill.

Things that are wrong with this Aprilia RSV4 include: Looking at the exposed wires and the back of the headlights in the cockpit reminds you why we used to call Aprilia "the Kawasaki of Italy" The traction-control left-thumb toggles are great when you're closing on Checa in the final laps, but a pain in the butt every time you want to find the turnsignal button.

ROADRACING CHAMPIONS FIND and maintain a pace that keeps them near the front. The stakes for street riders are higher due to the everchanging and uncontrolled environment; finding an enjoyable, survivable pace on today's exemplary bikes takes mental forethought and physical skills.

OF THE TWO tires above, which has more grip? Correct, #2. More rubber touching the road is more grip. And the best riders in the world are constantly working to be riding on #2. You can, too. Imagine coming into a corner on the brakes: Your front contact patch is expanded and you're on the #2 tire, lots of rubber on the road.

The neatly mown lawn by the Quail Lodge clubhouse in Carmel, California, is just eight acres. You could run across it in 60 seconds or whack a Titleist clear overhead, given a decent swing But it's plenty big enough to contain almost the entire history of motorcycling-yours to savor for just $65?

THERE IS A GENERATION of American motorcyclists growing up that thinks a "rad" Japanese custom bike is a Honda CB350 with its fenders taken off and the paint stripped from its gas tank. They are working within their resources and limited budgets, a good thing.

Q: A decade or so back, "upside-down" or "inverted" forks were heralded as the greatest thing to come along for motorcycles since the discovery of fire. Since that time, a large number of bikes have adopted that kind of fork, but I still see quite a few large, expensive motorcycles that use the conventional style, bikes like the Yamaha FJR1300, Moto Guzzi Norge and lots of big, heavy cruisers.

-> They've been working on the bike for a while and had some good theoriesmainly in the chassis, lateral and torsional stiffness-but we didn't find much of a sten with it. -> At Jerez, I was maybe one-tenth faster. We tested it more in Mugello and were a couple of tenths slower.
