THERE HAD BEEN ECHOES OF MY grandfather’s life, reflected mostly by my dad. “He was an orphan who came to America from Hamburg before the first World War.” “He accidentally broke ‘Skinny Jimmy’s’ ribs at the bar around the corner.” “He was a milkman in a horse-drawn wagon.”

ADD HONDA'S ZERO-SHIFT-DELAY MotoGP transmission to the novel shift systems that have appeared on motorcycles lately. Honda introduced its pushbutton-or-automatic Dual-Clutch Transmission on the VFR1200F DCT, and Yamaha's FJR1300AE uses the foot-or-pushbutton-shift YCC-S system.

IT DOESN’T TAKE CALCULUS OR CLAIRVOYANCE TO FIGURE OUT THAT BMW has worked on a 600cc sportbike, one in the same vein as its crushingly successful S1000RR. Rumors were piping-hot last year, fueled when BMW secured an Internet domain name incorporating S600RR, but the Germans denied such a bike was in the offing anytime soon.

WHEN CW ASSOCIATE EDITOR MARK CERNICKY COULDN’T decide on a color to paint his resurrected Honda Hawk GT NT650 project bike, he approached Sport Chrome (www.sportchrome.com) in Westminster, California. After some discussion about Cernicky’s chrome-helmet-wearing past life as a skateboarder, owner Jonathan Reed came up with a (ahem) brilliant idea: polish, not paint!

A couple of really cool blasts from Yamaha’s past were featured in this issue, including the FZ600, YX600 Radian and the SRX600 Thumper, all of which got the full road-test treatment. To wrap up the FZ road test, editors borrowed from Winston Churchill, saying, “In the mid-displacement sportbike battle, this may be Yamaha’s ‘finest hour.''' •Anyone looking for a standard motorcycle at a good price that didn’t sacrifice performance would surely have been interested in the $2399 Radian.

I’ve been retired for several years from a quite-successful 30-year career as a high-level corporate headhunter, during which I concluded that most job applicants obsess far too much over the format of their résumé. For the most part, readers of those sorts of documents know exactly what they are looking for and where to find it.

RELEASE A NEW, MORE-POWERFUL Ducati Monster on Mount Etna, an active volcano on the ancient island of Sicily? Am I making this up? Never. What could be more natural? Sicily isn’t that far from Bologna and it’s packed with fantastic roads—the ideal setting and location, really, for the launch of Ducati’s new Monster 1100 EVO. An early-release 2012 model, the 1100 EVO combines the best of the Monster 1100 and 1100S to focus development instead on one Monster.

R-77 Slip-On
$459
We’ve all met—or, more likely, heard— That Guy, the unconscionable cretin with the ready-for-Road-America race pipe bolted on his streetbike. Yoshimura has a quieter, more stylish alternative: an R-77 slip-on muffler ($459 to $629) that meets EPA noise-emissions requirements of 80 dB. Installation on specified models won’t violate federal law or get you thrown out of your neighborhood. The trapezoidal body is available in stainless steel, titanium or carbon fiber. End caps come in either polished stainless steel or carbon fiber. The front cap is MIG-welded, while the end cap is riveted using 304-L polished stainless steel rivets and bands.

Towelettes
$1
Hot day on the highway? Caked with dirt and road grime? Before you head out to dinner and a movie, or even a cup of coffee, take a minute to freshen up with the Paper Shower Wash-and-Dry Towelette System ($1 each). This simple, low-cost combination of moist and dry towelettes—individually sealed in convenient, folding packs— lets you wash up and dry off quickly and easily without feeling wet and sticky.

Keihin FCR Carburetor
$1330
Sudco International promises enhanced grunt-and-go for KTM 950 V-Twins, including the award-winning Adventure, with the installation of its Keihin 39mm FCR Carburetor Kit. The $1330 package features a pair of pre-jetted Keihin FCR flat-slide carburetors, adapters, push/pull throttle cables, velocity stacks, K&N air filters and related hardware necessary for bolt-on, ready-to-ride fitment.

Rear Protection Bar Kit
$299
Protect the pricey factory sidepanels and saddle-bags on your BMW R1200RT with a Rear Protection Bar Kit from Wunderlich (Black or Silver, $299; Chrome, $309). Manufactured in Germany exclusively for Wunderlich, the rigid, seamless tubular steel bumpers protect against tip-over damage without obstructing either rider or passenger mobility. Also available for the RT: Wind Deflector ($124), Engine Protection Bars ($329), Cylinder Head Protectors ($229) and Top Case Rack ($145).
Yoshimura R&D of America, Inc.
Racetracks
$199
Own your own track—or two or even three! Hockenheim, Laguna Seca, Le Mans, Monza, Nürburgring, Silverstone and Spa are but a few of the 48 famous racing circuits from around the world that are now available for wall mounting in your garage, home or office. Each custom design is CNC-machined from Baltic birch and laminated with black Formica. Layouts vary, of course, but the average size of each piece is 36 inches square. Prices start at $199.

Z-Clean Chain Lube
$14.15
In motor oil, the zinc-based additive ZDDP (Zinc Dialkyl Dithio Phosphate) helps reduce wear on engine components that make metal-to-metal contact. Spectro Oils has applied that highly beneficial attribute to its new Z-Clean Chain Lube ($14.15 per can), which uses a special zinc formulation claimed to provide exceptional anti-wear protection for longer chain and sprocket life. Z-Clean does not attract dirt or grit and will not fling off, and it’s suitable for all chains, including O-, Zand X-ring, on both street and off-road bikes.

Anza Jacket and Saipan Shoes
$80
Nothing says "old school" like a simple windbreaker and a pair of canvas high-top sneakers. Maybe that's why Chrome's Anza jacket (black, sizes S-XL; $80) and Saipan shoes (black or gray, sizes 4.5-14; $80) are so popular with the custom bobber crowd. Chrome says the three-pocket, water-repellant polyester Anza “makes a great layering piece to throw on under your motorcycle jacket for cutting the morning chill. Or during warmer seasons, it’s all you need.” And the Saipan with its arrest-me-red, heavy rubber sole? “This shoe is tough. Reminds us of something The Outsiders would wear.” Metal-tipped laces have their own “garages” built into the tongue, so when you’re riding, the laces won’t get hung up on the shift lever or brake pedal. A side zipper makes for easy on and off.

IF YOU WERE A FAN OF THE TV SHOW “The X-Files,” you must have wondered, “Can’t the FBI afford real flash-lights?” Every time agents Mulder and Scully entered a dark room where undoubtedly existential terror lurked in a corner, they held lights that cast a laser-like beam, illuminating about a 6-inch circle on the far wall.

MOTORCYCLISTS WHO FAVOR TANK-bags for carrying their workday and weekend essentials have long relied on two simple hold-down methods: magnets or adjustable straps. Problem is, gas tanks on many late-model sporty bikes are now partly or completely shrouded in (or made of) plastic; magnets don’t stick.

PAUL DEAN
Q I have a bucket full of water at the bottom of a well. A rope is attached to the bucket at one end and a winch at the other. I apply X amount of force to the winch handle (torque) and wind the bucket to the top in 20 seconds. Drop the bucket in again, refill it with water and apply the same force to the handle but wind it faster.

Just about any toolbox worth its weight in navel lint contains at least one pair of adjustable pliers called “tongue & groove,” “arc joint,” “groove joint” or some other descriptive name, depending on their manufacturer. The concept was invented by Channellock nearly 80 years ago, and many other tool companies have put their own spin on that basic design ever since.

Q In the May issue’s Service section, the reply to Craig Mclnerny’s question related to torque and horsepower includes this simple, clear (but clearly wrong) statement: “...the only possible way an engine can have a peak horsepower number that is bigger than its peak torque number is if the torque peak arrives above 5252 rpm.”
