MOTORCYCLING LOST ONE OF ITS GOOD guys this past September when Mike Traynor, co-founder of the Ride for Kids program, succumbed to a viral lung infection. He was 70 years old. Back in 1984, Traynor and wife Dianne were moved to action when a co-worker’s 5-month-old daughter was diagnosed with brain cancer.

∧ UP: To C.R. Axtell, 82, for a life at full throttle. The legendary Southern California race tuner passed away August 29, but he leaves behind tributes that read in bhp. BSA, Triumph and Norton flat-trackers all responded well to Axtell’s touch, as did Harley-Davidsons, and even Cycle magazine’s famous Ducati 750SS roadracer.

Inside, the first thing that grabbed my attention in this “Preview ’85” edition was the coverage in Roundup from the Cologne Show in Germany. The then-new GSX-R750 (which would hit our shores a year later) opened the section, followed by images of a pair of not-for-American-consumption two-strokes, including Suzuki’s RG500 Gamma squareFour and Honda’s NS400R V-Three.

SUPERMOTO HAS BEEN A bit of an empty promise over the years, both in terms of the converted dirtbikes racing on asphalt and with the large street-bikes inspired by them. Don’t get me wrong, the racing is great and the bikes are a lot of fun. But neither has really attracted crowds to the racetrack or showroom.

THROUGH THE YEARS 1975-2001, WHEN two-strokes dominated 500cc roadracing, the high power and steep powerbands of those engines forced the development of capable chassis, suspensions and tires. Those emerging technologies, combined through the 1980s with compact and lightweight liquid-cooled four-stroke engines, made the modern high-powered sportbike possible.

WELL, THE PLANNING HAS BEEN GOing on for months now. Three of us-my local riding buddy Lew Terpstra, Mike Mosiman from Colorado and I— are plotting a late-autumn bike trip. From here in Wisconsin to the Smokies and then up along the Blue Ridge into Virginia, back along the Ohio River, home through Indiana and Illinois.

APRILIA'S NEW 1000CC V-Four went straight to the front in World Superbike Racing this year, with MotoGP veteran Max Biaggi at the throttle. It evidently makes a difference that Aprilia has a ton ot GP and Superbike experience, because Biaggi was able to make trouble for series "heavies" Noriyuki Haga (Ducati 1198R) and Beii Spies ( \`amalia Y7 F~ R 1).

LET'S FACE IT, CRUISING IS AS MUCH ABOUT THE image conveyed as by the experience of riding itself. Some may hate me for saying that, but the reality is that the bike you buy, how you personalize it and where you ride it says a lot about you. Nowhere is this more evident than in the world of the Harley-Davidson faithful.

DAVID EDWARDS
YES, WE KNOW, THE PHRASE “FACTORY CHOPPER” IS AN OXYMOron. Get over it, they’re here. But no self-respecting chopper should ever be described as “showroom stock.” That’s why we took our Honda Fury testbike to CW's favorite customizer, Denny Berg, and asked, “What could the average owner do to this bike, inexpensively, to personalize it over, say, a long holiday weekend?” Denny suggested we open up the timeframe to several weekends or, better yet, a few weeks.

SXR Street Tracker
$299
Pump up the appearance of nearly any Harley-Davidson Sportster manufactured during the past three decades with an SXR Street Tracker conversion kit. All parts are sold individually and include a color-impregnated plastic gas tank ($495) coated on the inside to prevent corrosion caused by the presence of ethanol in pump fuel. A spacer kit ($299) allows replacement of the stock 16-inch rear wheel with a more dirt-track-authentic 19-inch front wheel.
Phil Little Racing
Arc'teryx Fury AR
$379
Quick show of hands: Who would like to add a few more weeks or even days to their riding season, cold and wind be damned? Intended to be worn under a leather or textile riding jacket, the soft-shell Arc’teryx Fury AR ($379; S-XXL) uses two-way stretch Gore Wind-stopper fabric to block wind and enhance breathability. The waist-length coat was created with on-bike mobility in mind, with a tall collar, articulated elbows, “no-lift” gusseted under-arms and low-profile hook-and-loop sleeve adjusters. Bonus: The Fury AR looks good on its own off the bike and out on the town.
Phil Little Racing
Toschi Compagno
$295
Overpack? Not us. Designer Michael Toschi has just the bag for a weekend ride: the Campagno ($295). This pyramid-shaped, non-collapsing creation is sized to fit comfortably in the large aftermarket or original-equipment top cases commonplace on many of today’s adventure-, luxuryand sport-touring motorcycles. An isolated shoe compartment keeps loafers separate from trousers, and shirts are suspended in the top of the case to help reduce wrinkles. Five zippered storage pouches provide space for personal items. There is even a removable shoulder strap and an anti-skid base.
Phil Little Racing
Motorcyclist's Butt Waxx
$12
Sore ass? Hey, on-bike comfort is no laughing matter, especially when you are many miles from home. To avoid the burning sensation associated with "biker's butt," apply a thin layer of Motorcyclist's Butt Waxx to your hindquarters before embarking on a big day on your bike. Developed by Paceline Products, the same company that brought Chamois Butt'r to the bicycling community, this non-greasy, non-staining formula contains aloe and lanolin to prevent chafing and skin irritation. Motorcyclist's Butt Waxx is available in 5-ounce tubes ($12) and .3-ounce individual-use packets ($0.99). Bottom, um, line: It works.
Phil Little Racing
d3o Armor
If the foam padding that came standard in your riding jacket and pants is so poorly shaped and uncomfortable that you removed it, d3o has a solution: "intelligent armor." The SuperFabric-backed, CE-approved elbow, shoulder, hip and knee protectors are incredibly thin and lightweight, yet they are claimed to absorb and dissipate high levels of energy over a wide range of temperatures. d3o armor is now standard in Firstgear's new three-layer Technical Performance Gear.
Phil Little Racing
Crime Scene Choppers Bad Attitude Finned Primary Cover
$335
Show off the belt and pulleys on any 2or 3-inch Harley-derivative open primary drive with a see-through Crime Scene Choppers Bad Attitude Finned Primary Cover ($335 satin finish; $450 polished). Manufactured in the U.S., the cast-aluminum creation comes with stainless-steel hardware.
Phil Little Racing
Original Bike Spirits Cycle Fuel System Supreme
$7.95
Original Bike Spirits says its Cycle Fuel System Supreme additive ($7.95; 8 ounces) will improve your motorcycle's engine performance and has Dynojet dynamometer readings to back up its claims. In tests conducted by the product's manufacturer, Amrep, adding 1 ounce of Cycle Fuel System Supreme per gallon of gas to an 8000-mile 2003 Suzuki GSX-Rl000 allegedly resulted in a 4 percent bump in horsepower and a nearly 5 percent increase in torque. Original Bike Spirits offers a full line of cleaners, polishes and other motorcycle-specific chemicals.
