LOOKS LIKE ANY OTHER RAT TRIUMPH chopper, right? Hacked together by the thousands in the late '60s and early '70s, then relegated to the scrapheap or-at best-the back of the garage as styles changed...or riders wised up and moved on to something more survivable.

AFTER SPENDING A SUNNY AFTERNOON out in our yard yesterday-raking up the leaves I should have raked last fall—I was too tired to make anything but popcorn for dinner, so I made a big batch and kicked back to read for the evening. Casting about for something deeper and more intellectually stimulating than the usual pile of old motorcycle traders that dominate my “reading,” I sifted down and discovered an actual book-yes, a thing with hardly any pictures-that my sister, Barbara, gave me last Christmas.

I HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THE SPLIT between large Chinese motorcycle manufacturer Haojue and former Aprilia racing manager Jan Witteveen. Witteveen and engine-development engineer Franco Moro (ex-Aprilia, ex-Fantic) were contracted to design for Haojue a 125cc two-stroke Single for Grand Prix roadracing-something surely straightforward if not actually easy, given their background.

I just finished reading Peter Egan’s “A Triumph in the Crescent City” (CW, July) and I noticed one disparity. Having spent the first 26 years growing up in the Big Easy, unless they moved after Katrina, Liuzza’s was always on Bienville and N. Telemachus, the 3500 block, if memory serves.

Yoshimura R&D of America, Inc.,
YZF-R1
$809
Nothing roaring around the MotoGP paddock sounds quite like Valentino Rossi's Yamaha YZR-Ml with its uneven firing order. Now you, too, can enjoy much the same aural experience with your crossplane-crankshaft 2009 YZF-R1 by fitting a Yoshimura R-77 (shown) or TRC-D undertail slip-on exhaust system. Both designs retain the stock catalytic converter, come with stainless-steel mid-pipes and are available with either carbon-fiber, stainless or titanium mufflers with carbon or stainless endcaps. Suggested retail prices start at $809i.

Wiseco Pistons
Friction? What friction? Wiseco's tough. slippery ArmorGlide piston skirt coating is said to compensate for thermal growth, allowing tighter piston-to-cylinder-wall tolerances and better sealing. Offered on a wide range of high-performance applications, the patented coating will allegedly last the life of the piston.
Yoshimura R&D of America, Inc.,
EVS Factor and TakT helmets
$250
Protect your brain from off-road knocks with the latest Snell-certified, DOT/ECE-approved helmets from EVS. Both the composite TakT ($250; XS-XXL) and the polycarbonate Factor ($169; XS-XXL) feature removable moisture-wicking liners, integrated venting, large eyeports and EVS'S exclusive ProtEdge Soft Impact Zone, designed to reduce neck and clavicle injuries.

Many trendy shades don't fit well inside helmets, their thick metal or plastic framework hanging up on everything from the eyeport to the interior. Even if you are somehow able to stuff your fashionforward glasses into place, comfort, vision and possibly even safety may be compromised. TAG Heuer's new Curves, Squadra, Night Vision, Reflex and Zenith collections feature ultra-slim, rubbercovered titanium temples that flex to better facilitate under-helmet wear. Furthermore, the French company claims its ophthalmic-quality, prescription-ready lenses-available in a selection of shapes and colors-are UV A-, Band C-resistant and shatterproof. Suggested retail prices for the lightweight, handmade Squadra and Night Vision models shown here are $350 and $450, respectively.
Yoshimura R&D of America, Inc.,
Airtex Shirt
$149
Streetand off-road riders alike will appreciate the upperand lower-torso protection provided by Bohn Body Armor. Designed to be worn under a riding jacket and jeans, leathers or Bohn's own line of off-road enduro gear, the armored shirts, shorts and pants come in a variety of materials and styles. Top sellers include the Airtex Shirt ($149) and Adventure Pants ($159). Back and chest protectors are also available.
Yoshimura R&D of America, Inc.,
Willie & Max Black Label seat
$160-$400
Kick back in comfort on your latemodel Honda, Kawasaki or Suzuki cruiser with a Willie & Max Black Label seat ($160-$400). All models feature thermoformed bases, highdensity/resiliency foam and UVresistant automotive-grade synthetic leather with top-stitched reinforced seams.

Best new-bike bargain for 2009? One of the frontrunners has to be the Star V Star 950, pricing starting at $7890. What to do with the thousands of dollars saved? Spend 'em on Cobra Accessories-more than 25 in all. Selection includes seven full exhaust systems as well as this slip-on muffler ($240). Cool thing is, the slashcut, billet-aluminum tip can be oriented up, down or at various angles by simply rotating the tip in the desired direction.

The 2010 KX45OF received multiple updates in an effort to improve what was already one of the best 450cc motocrossers available. Changes include a new bridged-box-bottom piston (short-skirt, slipper-type), crankshaft, clutch, intake cam, ECU and larger radiators, all of which contribute to more power and improved response.

Not only did the race provide a second stateside round for the globe-trotting MotoGP series, it led off the first of many onand off-track events planned for The Brickyard's much-anticipated centennial celebration.

GETTING A FLAT TIRE IN AN AUTOMObile is aggravating enough. But on motorcycles, flats are a lot scarier, more troublesome to repair and can easily lead to serious harm for the bike’s operators. No wonder riders dread them so much. New York-based Rhino Tire is out to assuage those fears with a patented “Rhinotire” tire treatment claimed to seal punctures immediately after they occur.

ALLAN GIRDLER
HAP ALZINA LOVED MOTORCYCLING. There was no doubt whatsoever about that. Born in 1894, at the dawn of the sport, Alzina got his first motorcycle when he was barely in his teens and went to work as a mechanic as soon as he turned 16. He raced dirt-track and hillclimbs and endurance runs, in which he was good enough to defeat the legendary Cannonball Baker at least once.

Q I own a well-maintained 2003 Kawasaki ZZR1200 with 12,000 miles on it. I bought it new and have never abused it. So, why do I manage to get this bike into what I guess you would call a “false neutral” or “in between gears”? I wear proper hard-soled riding boots, but I still often get the transmission stuck between gears, and it makes a “clankityclank” noise that sounds like it’s not properly engaged (which of course it isn’t).

This getting-old thing is, well, getting old. The normal effects of age, combined with the aftermath of far too many crashes over more than 50 years of riding and racing, have left me with, among other unwelcome gifts, ankles that don’t quite articulate like they once did.

If I were you readers, I'd really have to start wondering about me. Because for the second time in recent months, I have to issue a correction and an apology for providing misinformation. When responding to a July Service letter, titled “Dyno numbers game,” from a reader named Rod Havens, I stated that “if a motorcycle develops 100 hp at the rear wheel and the overall gear ratio is 3:1, the engine is indeed producing 33.3 hp—not counting frictional losses between crank and rear wheel.” That is incorrect.

Q What is it about Harley-Davidson XR-750s that have allowed them to dominate dirt-track racing, while that same traditional H-D design has proven not to be competitive in other forms of racing? Posted on www.cycleworld.com Peter Whitworth A Some people claim that the XR's uneven firing order is very helpful to traction, and I won’t dispute that, but there is another factor: Their peak torque appears at the lowest rpm at which the engine can smoothly pull on the dyno-/'.e., at about 5500 rpm-and it falls steadily and slowly from there to peak power, just at or a bit above 9000.
