FOR SOMETHING THAT WAS ALL BUT UNKNOWN 10 years ago, blogs have done pretty well for themselves. Chroniclers of the genre can identify just 23 “personal online journals” (later “web logs,” soon contracted to “blogs”) as 1999 began, maintained by pointy-headed computer wonks who knew how to code HTML, the “tag language” of the Internet.

NOT EVERYONE IS ABLE TO THROW HIS BACK out merely by sneezing, but I managed this difficult feat about a week ago. Since then, I’ve been shuffling around like one of those zombies from Night of the Living Dead. But-luckily for all concerned-I have no appetite for human flesh and have been getting by quite nicely on my usual diet, which is based on the premise that ancho peppers and dark beer are the basic building blocks of life.

I ALWAYS RESENTED IT DURING THE 1970S when motorcycling was classified as a “leisure activity ”-as if it excited the same lukewarm passions as shuffleboard or solitaire. Today it is acknowledged that motorcyclists remain more technically interested in their vehicles than are most of the sporty auto crowd, and you can see that difference in their magazines (or I wouldn’t be here).

Fantastic! “Memories of the Mile” (Race Watch, January) completely took me by surprise and blew my ridin’ boots off. I knew Speed Channel’s Dave Despain had a motorcycle background, but I never realized how extensive it was. His writing style is so smooth and easy to read, I could almost smell the castor oil and race gas.

HT09
$500
As most motorcyclists are already aware, a garage is more than a place for storing your stuff; it’s a refuge and gathering place. With a wall-mountable HT09 ($500) from HANNspree, title sponsor of the World Superbike series, you and your friends won’t miss any racing while you’re wrenching. The 28-inch HT09 boasts full highdefinition 1080p resolution, a 3millisecond response time, a 16:10 aspect ratio and 160-degree viewing angle. Multiple device inputs, including two HDMI ports, let you connect a personal computer, an HD cable box, a gaming console or a Blu-ray disc player. Powerstands Racing Power Platform
$280
Munching over a motorcycle for hours on end can’t be good for the long-term health of your back. Featuring height-adjustable legs to accommodate uneven surfaces, the Powerstands Racing Power Platform ($280) is manufactured of heavyduty mild steel, powdercoated gray and folds in half to ease portability. It is 88 inches long, 24 inches wide

Porter-Cable Job Boss
$399
Pop the bead on a new knobby with a bicycle pump? Forget about it! Porter-Cable’s Job Boss air compressor ($399) is small enough to fit under a workbench but powerful enough to support common air tools. Better yet, it’s portable. The 3.5-peak-horsepower motor delivers a mass flow rate of 7.8 Standard Cubic Feet per Minute at 40 psi and 6.0 SCFM at 90 psi, draws only 15 amps and runs on 120-volt household current. The stars of the sport, from Jorge Lorenzo to Chris Vermeulen, Casey Stoner, Valentino Rossi, Colin Edwards, Nicky Elayden and Loris Capirossi, come clean in this 120-minute video on a variety of subjects, including braking, cornering, overtaking, training and even crashing. Plus, it can be connected for months or even years at a stretch. A backlit LCD shows the realtime charging rate, including voltage and amperage. A wall bracket and extra-long cables are supplied. KEVIN CAMERON
DRAG RACING IS HUGE IN THE U.S., and Pro Stock Motorcycle has number-four billing at NHRA nationals. The three Ages of Pro Stock are: 1) Age of Suzuki, when big-inch Fours based on the 66mm-stroke GS1100 and 1150 dominated; 2) Age of the Vance & Hines big Twin-to boost partisanship, rules were written to match 160-cubic-inch Twins with two valves and pushrods against two-valve, 101-inch Fours; V&H built such a “Harley V-Rod” from scratch, zero H-D parts, and made a winner of it; 3) Age of the S&S Twin.

Forget about the bike on the cover-the third-generation Honda GL1200 Gold Wing. I’m sure it was “a nice place to sit while the world glides by,” as stated on the table of contents. My attention, however, was on the brandnew, bumblebee-yellow Yamaha YZ250 featured elsewhere in that issue.

KTM may not be the first to dabble with an electric off-road motorcycle, but the Austrian company promises that its Zero Emission Motorcycle prototype embodies the company’s “Ready to Race” philosophy. Built in cooperation with Arsenal Research, the motorcycle proves that you don’t need a fuel tank, an airbox or a clutch to produce an off-road-worthy bike.

IT’S NO SECRET THAT FOURstroke motocross sales have put two-strokes on life support. We’ve already seen Kawasaki and Suzuki remove big-boy models from their lineups, while Honda has stopped selling them altogether, leaving Yamaha the sole Japanese importer still flying the 250cc smoker flag.

THIS THING IS POSITIVELY brilliant! Not necessarily as a scooter, understand. For you and me, a conventional two-wheeled scooter is lighter, less complex and less expensive. Thing is, the MP3 wasn’t built for you and me. Two impediments that keep “civilians” from riding are the need to master a manual clutch/gearbox and the fear of tipping over.

WE HAD ARRIVED ON the other side of the Earth. Not only is India a land far, far away, but it felt a bit like we had traveled through time, too. And it wasn’t just the jetlag and 3 a.m. arrival after almost 30 hours of flying. No, the greatest sense of time travel came from visiting the Royal Enfield factory in the coastal city of Chennai, on the Bay of Bengal, where they have been making essentially the same Royal Enfield Bullets since 1955, when the English factory shipped the tooling over so they could build bikes for the Indian army.

NICK IENATSCH
THINK NFL LINEBACKERS ARE scary? The ferocity of a quarterback blitz can’t hold a candle to AMA Dragbike’s Pro Street class. Picture 6-foot-1, 250-pound, nine-time Pro Bowler Ray Lewis of the Baltimore Ravens armed with a grenade launcher and a hair-trigger machine gun and you begin to get the picture.

Kent Stotz began drag racing in 1977 at age 19. Told he was too old for a career in motocross, the Chi-Town kid parked his dirtbike and took on the quarter-mile. His inspiration? None other than the wild man of motorcycle drag racing, Russ Collins.

Q I could not sleep until I had my Harley dealer install a Vance & Hines 2-into-1 Pro Pipe, a V&H Fuelpak and an H-D high-volume air cleaner on my new ’08 Heritage Classic. Riding home from the dealership, a trip of 230 miles, I watched in horror as the fuel gauge fell to empty much sooner than it ever had with the stock pipes and fuel-metering setup.

Q The image of the new YZF-R1 ’s “crossplane” crankshaft (“2009 Yamaha YZF-R1 : More MotoGP” December, 2008) shows that numbers 2 and 3 crank throws are 180 degrees apart, but the text in that story claims otherwise (“Crossplane crankshaft places each connecting rod throw 90 degrees from the next...”).

Snap rings rarely jump out of their mounting grooves, but it does happen on occasion. And when it does, the failure usually is due to a worn snap ring, an exceptionally large, sudden force pushing against the ring or incorrect installation.
