I KNEW WE WERE IN TROUBLE AS SOON as I lined the bike up on the judging field. My circa-1950 Triumph T100 desert bike, done up in orange paint and checker-boards, looked painfully out of place among the classic Norton and Velocette racebikes—all in black with gold pinstripes— that made up most of the Competition/ Modified class at last May's Legend of the Motorcycle International Concours d'Elegance.

WHEN NOVELIST THOMAS WOLFE SAID you can't go home again, he didn't mean it literally. You can obviously go home again, but there's always a risk that things might be a little...different. If enough years have passed, the prom queen may have three chins and five grand-children, while Tony’s Malt Shop where you once heard Gene Vincent on the juke-box might have turned into a tanning salon.

WE ARE ACCUSTOMED TO HEARING THAT high-duty wristpins or aircraft landing gear struts are made of H-11 tool steel, or MX crankpins of 8620, or aluminum castings of alloy 356. There are thick books containing the properties of these alloys, with instructions for their correct application and heat-treatment.

I must question your reasoning regarding the 2007 MasterBike finalists ("Fast Times," CW August) and your Ten Best Bikes choices. When 11 Supersport riders post their best times on the Triumph Daytona 675, why send the Honda CBR600RR to the Ten Best level?

TaylorMade Racing Underbelly Exhaust Kit
$795
The only thing hotter than MotoGP is this GP-style muffler for the 2007 Suzuki GSX-R1000. Said to weigh a whopping 20 pounds less than the stock setup, the three-piece TaylorMade Racing Underbelly Exhaust Kit ($795) replaces the factory-issue under-engine pre-muffler and dual side-mounted canisters with a fully baffled, ceramic-coated titanium silencer. Carbon-fiber trim pieces blend in with the OEM fairing lowers for a clean, aerodynamic appearance. Expect an increase of 6.5 horsepower at 7000 rpm and 3 hp on top, along with a significant bump in sound, from 96 decibels to 105. TaylorMade Racing Inc., 7712 Gloria Ave. #3, Van Nuys, CA 91406; 818/781-8123; www.racetaylormade.com

V35 Monokey Side Cases
$180
Underseat exhausts may look cool, but they can be a nightmare when it comes to fitting luggage. Givi has a solution. Compatible with the new PLX-series mounting system ($180), the neatly integrated, narrow-pro-file V35 Monokey Side Cases provide 35 liters of storage capacity, and lock, unlock and detach with a single key. They are available for various late-model European and Japanese motorcycles. Suggested retail for Matte Black is $519; Gloss Silver, Satin Silver and Gloss Black are priced slightly higher. Available in XS-XXL sizes in three striking graphics—Rocket Science, Solid Edge or Good and Evil—the RKT101 ($270) features a composite-fiberglass shell, a removable, washable interior, intake and exhaust vents, and an optically correct, Pinlock-ready faceshield with tool-less changeability. Nano-Wash & Wax
$6.99
Life is too short to spend hours washing and waxing your motorcycle. Good thing Eagle One Nano-Wash & Wax ($6.99) combines those two tasks. In addition to cleaning and protecting in a single step, the concentrated formula is engineered to dry to a spot-free shine and keep dirt from being re-deposited back onto your bike as you wash. Eagle One, P.O. Box 14000, Lexington, KY 40512; 877/532-4536; www.eagleone.com

GMRS X1 Bluetooth
$400
Don't be afraid to saddle up out of concern that you might miss an important phone call. If you pair your Bluetooth-compatible mobile device with the Chatterbox GMRS X1 Bluetooth ($400), you can answer calls while in transit. The helmet-mounted communicator boasts improved speakers, a 5-mile between-rider range, an illuminated display, 22 channels with 38 talk groups and can simultaneously access an auxiliary music player. Choosing an off-road goggle isn't easy, but X Brand is making the decision-making process a little easier. The GOX ($45) comes with clear and mirrored shatter-resistant, anti-scratch, anti-fog lenses. Six-Piston Calipers
$560
French brake-maker Beringer has developed a six-piston caliper for the 2007 Yamaha YZF-R1. Machined from aircraft-grade billet aluminum, the 775-gram Aerotec ($560 per caliper) is a direct replacement for the stock six-piston brake and features a patented retaining system that allows the proprietary pads to float freely within the caliper, reducing disc drag. Racing versions equipped with titanium pistons and hardware are also available, as are complementary radial master cylinders. Hangin' Leather
$30
Leathers and other heavy riding apparel deserve better than a simple wooden wall peg. Hangin' Leathers handlebar-look-alike hanger ($30) is just the ticket. Manufactured of heavy-duty steel, the patentpending design is offered unpainted or powdercoated black, orange, red or silver. Two sizes provide the perfect fit for any jacket or riding suit, and 5-inch molded-rubber shoulder grips keep gear where it belongs: on the hanger and off the floor of your garage. X-Bike 600
$1195
what do the greatest motocrosser of all time and the current MotoGP World Champion have in common? Ricky Carmichael and Nicky Hayden both employ elite trainer Aldon Baker, who swears by the Trixter X-Bike 600 ($1195) for indoor training. This not-so-stationary bicycle features a rocking handlebar mechanism that allows the rider to work the entire body, as opposed to only the legs. Additional features include a freewheeling drivetrain, 32-levels of resistance, and micro-adjustable handlebar and seat heights. Pedals have toe-clips on one side and SPD-style clipless interfaces on the other. Ride along to one of five 30-minute DVD ($20) workouts and you'll find that the X-Bike is the closest thing to getting an outdoor cycling workout indoors. A wireless handlebar-mounted remote activates a computerized timing sequence that randomly drops the gate within a 1to 5-second period. THERE'S USUALLY A LOT of drama accompanying motorcycle product intros, with more sizzle than steak being the norm. But at its annual dealer meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada, Suzuki rolled out no fewer than six new or heavily revised models. The biggest sizzler, of course, is the 2008 Hayabusa.

MARK YOUR CALENdars: On September 14, 2008, motorcycle racing will return to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Return? Yes. While Indy's world-class reputation was built on open-wheel car racing, initial on-track competition at the famed Brickyard was two-wheels-only and took place on August 14, 1909, nearly two years before the inaugural 500-miler.

OVER THE PAST TWO years, the rumor mill has been pumping out a generous portion of hot air regarding fuel-injected dirtbikes, though the reality has been the continued use of carburetors. And from what we can gather at press time, the majority of manufacturers—except for Suzuki and its newly EFI'd RM-Z450—will still be using jets and needles in 2008.

ERIK BUELL IN THE 1970s WAS ONE OF AMERICA'S YOUNG MEN who had to race motorcycles. Soon, racing other people's designs just rubbed his fur backward. He wanted to be responsible for everything from the design concept forward. It has taken him years—2007 marks Buell Motor Company's 25th—to achieve this, but at last he is building a sportbike with a sportbike engine, the new-for-2008 Buell 1125R. A 72-degree Rotax "Helicon" V-Twin, designed to specific Buell requirements, powers this new bike.

Pity the poor chopper. Its day is done. Again. And for the same reasons the original long bikes fell from favor a generation ago. The g.d. things are a right royal pain in the arse to ride—quite literally. Somewhere out there is a rogue pothole waiting to pound your aging vertebrae into dust.

CREDIBILITY, THAT'S WHAT SUPERMOTO streetbikes have needed. Otherwise, most seemed like little more than a fashionable way to dress up motocross bikes so you could legally ride them on the road. Which, mind you, is not such a terrible thing.

IT HAD BEEN EXACTLY 10 YEARS SINCE MY LAST VISIT, five years since the first Enduro India charity event and, fittingly, 60 years since India celebrated its independence from the British. Times have changed considerably for this ancient and exotic nation that has embraced the epoch of information technology and is firmly in control of its destiny.

UNFAMILIAR WITH BENELLI? You are excused. The historic marque hasn't made as big of a splash recently on American soil as more established Italian brands like Aprilia, Bimota, Ducati, Moto Guzzi and MV Agusta. In fact, Benelli's only notable presence in this country over the past decade has been participation in Laguna Seca's World Superbike rounds in 2001 and '02.

Benelli's greatest moment of roadrace history almost didn't happen. In 1969, Australian Kel Carruthers took the 250cc Grand Prix championship aboard an eight-speed Four producing 64 horse-power at 14,500 rpm. Carruthers taking the title was something his Benelli employers never intended.

Benelli’s Coord3 MCT Starlight three-axis measuring machine is the coolest piece of factory machinery I’ve ever seen. It looks like something out of a sci-fi film and is used to measure components with unerring accuracy. Gianluca Galasso, Benelli’s test rider/press officer, doesn’t know how much it costs.

THE CAPTAIN IS NERVOUS. HE PUTS A CIGARETTE to his lips, picks up a lighter then remembers he doesn't smoke. We haven't heard a word from him in 30 minutes. We're in his North Wales garden under a faultless blue sky. Fifty-five miles away, the Isle of Man is gearing up for the first race of the Centenary TT. If you love motorcycle racing, it's the only show in town.

Steven L. Thompson
For some motorcycle roadracers, competing in the Isle of Man is an end in itself. I know; I'm one of them. I began roadracing when I was just 18years old, in March of 1967. I finished second in my first race, which left me hooked on racing as hard as any heroin addict is to his drug of choice.

POP QUIZ: WHAT DO BRAKE CALIPERS and disc locks have in common? Answer: They both straddle a brake rotor. One pinches the rotor to slow the bike, the other inserts a pin through it to deter theft. Kinda makes you wonder why no one has consolidated both functions into one unit.

Nothing new about fuel-injection remapping devices. Products such as the Power Commander, the Fi2000, the G-Pack and others have been around for quite a while. But one of the latest entries in the field of EFI tuning has not just raised the bar; it has elevated the bar almost out of sight.
