THE HOUSTON ASTRODOME WAS A SPEcial place for a motorcycle race. For 18 years starting in 1968, the so-called "Eighth Wonder of the World," the first fully enclosed sports stadium, hosted the opening rounds of the AMA Grand National Championship-a TT and a short-track-beneath its floodlamps and lattice-work ceiling.

IT WAS 5 BELOW ZERO HERE IN WISCONSIN this morning, so I cleverly decided to drink coffee and read the paper instead of tak inga ride. After the mandatory scan of motorcy cle want ads (slim pickin's in winter), I found myself reading a column called "Tech Smart" (quite beneficial to those of us who are "Tech Stupid") and ran across a product review of a new portable GPS unit.

WHO IS REALLY DESIGNING MOTORCY cles these days? We'd like to think that the answer is experienced, insightful engi neers, constantly pushing the limits of hu man knowledge. In certain respects, that is a reasonable answer. Consider the new R6 Yamaha, with its 1 7,500-rpm redline, its effective and light labor-saving die cast chassis and its single-butterfly, com puter-modulated throttle system.

Deuter Trans Alpine 30 backpack
With m~re than a century of experie ce in the backpack-making business, Deu ter is one of the leading international pack brands. So what, right? WellS many features found on the German company's current products, such as the contoured, circulation-enhancing Airstripes system, the Wide Pac Opening Streamer hydra tion reservoirs and the armored Shield Back System, work well for motorcycling, both onand off-road. The $125 Trans Alpine 30, for example, weighs less than 3 pounds, yet its dividable main compartment and multiple smaller pockets gobble up an enormous amount of gear. A dedicated pocket for the supplied 3-liter water reservoir is a nice touch. Ditto the integrated rain cover and snap together zipper pulls. Deuter USA, P0. I LIKE WRITING ABOUT engineering changes that make sense-in this case for the 2006 Suzuki GSX R600 and 750. Sportbikes, like fighter aircraft, are mar keted on the basis of what they can do-performance is king. Sales competition drives bike performance, pushing up power through higher revs and reduced fric tion, forcing chassis revi sions to handle the result.

The WP suspension's adjustability made it easy to zero in on the potential of its forgiving chassis, allowing the bike to be run in hard and deep over road distortions without deflection just absorption, the wheels tracking perfectly.

" N 0 WONDER THERE ARE SO MANY BLUEGRASS references to fog," I mumbled, wiping off my visor with one hand and peering blindly into the pure whiteness. "Foggy Mountain Breakdown. . .the Foggy Mountain Boys.. .these moun tains are full of it." A gas station and convenience store loomed out of the ether as I crested a ridge, and I pulled in for a warming cup of coffee.

A FTER AN EX-EXECUTIVE EDITOR made an unintended departure from the racetrack on our longterm Triumph Daytona 600, we wondered what the future held for the yellow Britbike. Something in the front end wasn't right, but we couldn't pinpoint the problem.

DOES THIS SOUND LIKE MARKETING lingo for the helmet of the future? “Glance up from your line of sight down the road, and your speed, engine rpm and gear pop into perfectly focused view on your faceshield. If your radar detector goes off, the display, always visible in your peripheral vision, starts flashing RADAR.” It’s not as if the technology isn’t available.

TWO HOURS OF STRAIGHT-ROAD RID ing on a stock-saddled dual-purpose bike is not as bad as you might think. It is better, for instance, than two hours plant ed on a splintered railroad tie, but only because the seats on D-P bikes usually don't have splinters.

I recently did something so dumb that even I marvel at it. I live in Alaska and race a Yamaha Rl that normally has WaterWetter in it, but no anti-freeze. When I put the bike and trailer in storage this fall, I forgot to drain the cooling system. A month later, after some really cold weather, I accidentally kicked the bottle that was supposed to contain the drained WaterWetter (it was under my lathe) and saw that it was empty !

Your December issue contained a letter from a fellow who was having a problem with the charging system on his Honda VFR75O ("Stalking on a VFR"). I have run into this problem on a few Hondas and have always found the cause to be the ptastic connector between the stator wires and the main wiring harness.
