HAND-WRINGERS CAN NOW RELAX. The film Biker Boyz has come and gone. Unlike Marlon Brando’s The Wild One from 50 years ago, it was not the cinematic sucker punch that many feared. It will not cause ordinary citizens to quake at the mere sight of loudly painted GSXRs.

NOT TOO LONG AGO, A READER SENT ME some photos of his sizeable motorcycle collection, all arranged row-upon-row in a beautiful new garage. He had a lot of nice bikes, including quite a few of my all-time favorites, such as a black-andgold Ducati 900SS, circa 1980, and a perfectly restored ’67 Triumph TR6-C. My favorite photo, however, was not of the bikes.

I think the folks at Honda made a typographical error in naming their new Valkyrie (“Elements of Style,” CW, March). After studying photos of the fork on the Rune, I’m sure they meant to call it the Rube (Goldberg)! Dav Pauli Long Beach, California I think Honda heard incorrectly when seeking rider input on the styling of their new Valkyrie.

IN A MOVE THAT ROCKED the bicycle industry-and to a lesser degree, motorcycling-Cannondale filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this past January. Reportedly, the situation was brought on by financial problems within the publicly held company’s motorsports division, which began producing dirtbikes and ATVs two and a half years ago.

Impressive motorcycle, the 2003 Kawasaki ZX-6R, on both street and track. Only thing is, its 636cc displacement means that, technically, it’s not a 600. It’s one thing to include it in a magazine comparison test, but quite another when it comes to Supersport racing, where class rules mandate 600cc max for four-cylinders.

A MAN'S GOT TO MAKE A living. But a man also has to express himself. So when Yamaha calls up Jeff Palhegyi and asks for an "official" custom bike project, he sits quietly and listens to directions (mostly) and builds what the Tuning Fork Folks want (mostly), with a little riff here and there that might slip by the legal department.

YOU COULD ARGUE THAT in building this bike, Roland Sands had all the advantages. You’d be right. As the son of Performance Machine founder Perry Sands, Roland had everything he needed right in front of him. But just because you’ve got a building full of parts and tools doesn’t mean you can build a bike, much less a gorgeous piece like Sands’ personal ride pictured here.

ow’s THIS FOR POWER of the Press? We JftJ write that the Honda Shadow Spirit 750 is one of our favorite cruisers; tidily styled, raspy sounding and at $5999, a srceamin’ good deal. Make a great little cutdown custom, we suggest. Some 2500 miles away, Paul Spradlin, owner of Underground Cycles (www.undergroundcycle.com ; 631/254-4507), a Long Island bike shop, reads our words and agrees.

I KNOW, I KNOW, I AM VERY LUCKY. RIDING YOUR mate's RC5 1 down the bypass is one thing, but being one of the first to shakedown a brand-new racing Superbike is quite another. Not only have I ridden Carl Fogarty's Petronas FP1 at Germany's Eurospeedway circuit, I spent three whole days huddling with the team.

THE FOGGY-PETRONAS FP1 MAY be crucial to the future of World Superbike. Without it-and with Honda out-there is only Ducati in the first rank, opposed by teams of lesser reputation. Malaysian oil company Petronas has reportedly allocated $50 million for the development and operation of the new Superbike.

Russia's largest motorcycle club, The Night Wolves, was born in an era of uncertainty and chaos that in the West is affectionately know as Perestroika. Among other things, the previously unheard-of freedoms led to a cultural explosion of rock music and rebellion, and for the first time, non-government-sanctioned groups could enjoy the right to assemble.

Icon's TiMax gloves might be intended for motorcycling, but when the going gets down and dirty, they'll make a set of brass knuckles seem about as threatening as a pair of snow mittens.

BRING UP THE WORD "INDIAN" AROUND BIKE NUTS and everyone immediately thinks of the grand skirted-fender Chiefs, those stylish highway cruisers with perhaps the most distinctive silhouette in motorcycling. But to really understand the soul of what was once America's biggest bike-maker, you have to move downstream to the Scout series, nicely detailed in this recent effort by marque historian Jerry Hatfield.

ANYONE CAN DO THE DAKAR RALLY,” STATES SEAN PRICE. HE would know, because he’s just done it. Maybe not “anyone,” but if you have the desire, the motivation and the money, you too can attack the world’s biggest off-road race as a privateer. Price was no factory racer on the latest equipment with a huge supporting crew of mechanics and trucks, such as KTM-mounted winner Richard Sainct, but simply a 39-year-old re-entry motorcyclist with a dream to ride the Dakar.
