A CRUEL, CRUEL MAN IS PAUL WATTS. Friend of the magazine, one-time collector of oddball Münch Mammuts, he dropped me an enticing note two weeks ago complete with snapshots. Advancing years and a recent knee replacement, he said, meant that his last remaining kickstart classic, a 1974 Ducati 750 GT, was reluctantly on the block.

NEVER HAS THE OWNERSHIP OF A WELL-liked motorcycle been so tragically brief. As mentioned in this column a few months ago, I bought myself a leftover 2001 Suzuki dual-sport DR650 last winter, as a critical part of my grand scheme to take a long off-road Baja trek next fall.

PICK UP ANY MODERN MOTORCYCLE cylinder head and turn it over. In each combustion chamber you will see two or more valve-seat rings, shrunk into the aluminum head material. The rings are there because aluminum is too soft to bear the steady seating impacts of valves directly.

Courier Bag
$87
Okay, so Aerostich’s $87 Courier Bag isn’t exactly new, but the myriad upgrades made to it during the past decade have made it even tougher and more versatile. Patterned after the document bags carried by bicycle and motorcycle messengers, the third-largest (12 x 7 x 18 inches) of the four-bag lineup uses a “rubberized” pvc/nylon lining that is not only stronger than the previous material, it’s waterproof. In addition, there are two inner pockets, a clip-on-type key loop, a wider and more durable closure and a nifty cam-lock shoulder-strap buckle for on-the-go adjustments. There are options aplenty, too, such as a Stabilizer Strap, Cell Phone Holster, Padded Computer Sleeve, Clear Zippered Pockets and much, much more.
Aero Design and Mfg. Co., Inc.
Picture Frames
$24
Display your favorite photograph in a Roadrash picture frame. Offered with a black or silver finish, the 5 x 7-inch wooden frames feature hand-carved motorcycle-theme molds affixed to their borders. Choose from Nac-Nac, Moto Apparel, Street Bike (shown), Dirt Bike and Quad Racer. Glare-resistant glass is supplied. Suggested retail price is $24.
Aero Design and Mfg. Co., Inc.
Facom Ergonomic Pliers
$98
Got the right tool for the job? Facom’s Comfort Grip Plier Line is a good place to start. Selling for $98, the three-piece set shown here includes a 10-inch Multigrip, 8-inch Long Nose with side-cutter, and 6.3-inch Heavy Duty Diagonal Cutters. All have non-slip handles and precision-machined cutting surfaces, and come with a lifetime warranty.
Aero Design and Mfg. Co., Inc.
Sportboards
$399
Now available for late-model BMW LTs and RTs, Ilium Works Sportboards take the place of the stock footpegs, and lower the rider’s feet l¾ inches. The $399 boards are CNC-machined from aluminum, measure 9 inches long and 4 inches wide, and use the stock brake and shift levers. Stainless-steel mounting hardware is supplied.
Aero Design and Mfg. Co., Inc.
Air Blower
$229
If you don’t have access to an air compressor to blow your bike dry post-wash, then you might consider this handy high-flow plug-in from Griot’s Garage. Less than a foot long and weighing only 8 pounds, the 4-horsepower unit is great for difficult-to-reach nooks and crannies, such as those areas between cylinder fins, under fenders and behind exhaust-pipe heat shields. The $229 price includes 10 feet of flexible plastic hose and four nozzles.
Aero Design and Mfg. Co., Inc.
GP1 Exhaust
$1100
Fresh from the creative minds of British engineer Paul Taylor (Saxon-framed Triumph T595, TaylorMade Racing carbon-fiber wheels) and stylist John Keogh (Buell XB9R, Triumph TT600) come this underseat exhaust for 2001-02 Suzuki GSX-R600, 750 and 1000s. Ceramic coating keeps heat inside the aluminum muffler (no burned buns!), while spent gasses exit through twin MV Agusta-esque tips. A fiber-glass undertray relocates the battery and ECU, while an LED tail-light/license-plate holder does away with the rear fender. Yours for $1100.
Aero Design and Mfg. Co., Inc.
Outback'r M14
$20
WHAT WILL $20 BUY YOU THESE DAYS? AN OUTBACK'R M14, THAT'S WHAT! THE COMPACT FOLD-UP IS ONLY 3½ INCHES LONG AND weighs a mere 9 ounces, but it will handle basic roadside repairs. The steel-plate-backed plastic body houses four hex keys (3, 4, 5 and 6mm), slotted and Phillips-type screwdrivers, a ¼-inch socket driver with 8, 10 and 12mm sockets, 13 and 14mm open-end wrenches and three spoke wrenches (6.0, 6.3 and 6.4mm). All of the tools are either heat-treated chrome vanadium or carbon-steel, and manufactured to precision tolerances. An SAE version is under development.

Having won 28 out of a possible 29 AMA 600 and 750cc Supersport Championships is strong evidence that the wheels of development are always turning at Dunlop. And while the new D208 ZR has certainly benefited from lessons learned in competition, it offers characteristics specific to riding on public roads: excellent cold-temperature performance, a balance of wet and dry grip, exceptional ride compliance, solid stability and improved wear.

The fact that the 916 and its successors, the 996 and 998, also worked, to the tune of six World Superbike Championships in the past eight years, only made the job that much more difficult.

ITALIAN CITATION
In Italy, as in America, speeding is illegal only if you get caught
[no value]

BRIAN CATTERSON
IT'S NOT THAT I DIDN'T deserve a speeding ticket, it's just that I didn't deserve this speeding ticket. After spending six days roosting around the Tuscany and Umbria regions of Italy at triple-digit speeds—even if my speedometer had been marked in mph, which it wasn't—it seemed incomprehensible that I got popped by photo radar while following a scooter.

EVER YEAR, IT SEEMS, THERE IS A HEAD-line bike in the dirt wars, but 2003 will go down as the year the floodgates opened. We haven't even ridden '03's most-anticipated bike, Yamaha's all-new YZ450F Thumper yet, but we have sampled more radically changed dirtbikes earlier in the year than ever before.

SAFE TO SAY, HONDA'S INTERCEPTOR has pretty much knocked our socks off. The fuel-injected V-Four topped July’s “World’s Best Streetbike” shootout, and won Best Open Streetbike honors in our 2002 Ten Best balloting. But would our enthusiasm wane over time?

HOW FAR HAVE YOU RIDDEN, AND AT what speed? What time is it? When was the last time you changed your oil? Trail Tech’s 18-function Endurance computer, formerly known as the Panoram, can answer these questions and more. Packed with features, this little plastic-bodied gem is just 3½ inches long, 1¾ inches wide and weighs only a few ounces.

Years ago, I swore that if I heard Queen’s “We are the Champions” one more time, I’d kill somebody. As if the boom-boom-boompf, boom-boom-boompf wasn’t sickening enough, there’s the accompanying visual burned into my brain (too many hours spent watching VH1’s “Behind the Music,” I guess) of Freddie Mercury prancing around in his skintight sequined jumpsuit, microphone held to his pursed lips.

I went to school at the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Phoenix, where they taught us to torque everything to the proper specifications. Shortly after graduation, I got a job at a local dealership as an entry-level tech. One day, while looking in the service manual for the rear-axle nut’s torque specs, I was told by the shop’s top mechanic that torquing wasn’t necessary.

Are you a tool junkie? Should you be enrolled in a 12-step program for garageaholics, people hopelessly addicted to shop equipment? I don’t know about you, but I’m the Imelda Marcos of tools. I can’t walk through the tool department of a Sears, Home Depot or any auto-parts store without buying something, even if I don’t have an immediate use for it.
