AWRIGHT, PUT THE REFLECTORIZED tape down and back away from the bike. Enough already with the debate over daytime high-beams. And if you buy one more piece of articulated, armor-plated, day-glo riding gear, you run the risk of being taken for some kind of post-Chernobyl armadillo mutant.

A FEW YEARS BACK, I FLEW TO YORK, Pennsylvania to do a story for our nowdeparted sister publication, Big Twin magazine. The idea was to interview Harley owners who work on the assembly line at the Harley-Davidson plant, find out which models they owned and what kind of modifications they’d made to their bikes.

I hope you can handle another letter about the “real biker” issue. When I read the letters from all those guys ripping David Edwards for his “Trouble by the Beach” column, I had to write. I have been riding motorcycles since my early teens, and since I now have more gray hair than I care to think about, I feel I can comment on who is a real biker.

Rust-Oleum Epoxy Shield
$58
WHAT MOTORCYCLIST wouldn’t delight in a showroomquality garage floor on which to park his pride-andjoy? Problem is, most do-ityourself floor treatments call for back-breaking prep and lots of downtime between coats. And commercial jobs are pricey. Well, RustOleum’s non-toxic, waterbased Epoxy Shield offers an affordable, easily applied, low-maintenance alternative. Said to provide 250 square feet of coverage, each $58 kit includes a mop-on cleaner/degreaser, two-part "epoxy," decorative chips for a non-slip finish, stirrer and instructional video. Best of all, a single brushor roller-applied coat (gray or tan) is all that’s needed. Downsides? The rest of the house may appear shabby in comparison.

RM125
Jimmy Lewis
BASED ON THE RESULTS OF THIS year’s motocross comparisons, Suzuki owned the 125cc class and was a solid contender in the 250cc ranks. Considering that both RMs were all-new for ’01, we suspected there wouldn’t be any major changes to the yellow bikes for ’02, and early photos confirmed that.

IF SANTA CLAUS CAME FROM the Land of the Rising Sun instead of the North Pole and drove a big blue box van instead of a miniature sleigh drawn by eight tiny reindeer, every kid would be getting a Yamaha YZ85 for Christmas. An all-new YZ85, that is.

PRIOR SERVICE HANG-UPS HANDLED, our long-term Dyna T-Sport is back on the road-in a big way. Keith May, art director for CW specials Harley-Davidson Power & Performance and Motorcycle Travel & Adventure, unwound from his stressful deadline schedule with a 30-day, 6500-mile tour of the southern U.S. He even chronicled the ride on his website, www.mayphotoanddesign.com.

DURING THE CENTURY THAT’S JUST BEEN PUT TO bed, maybe the best years to have been really young, really alive and a really balls-out motorcycle racer were the mid-to-late 1950s. Hot tracks, hot artillery, hot players. Serious action. And having the most fun and always seeming to be in the center of great adventures was this small but fanatical tribe of outcasts racing lime-juicer issue and playing the role of lonely Don Quixotes vs.

PULLED OUT OF AMSTERDAM AT ABOUT NOON AND HEADED FOR GERMANY singing, "The pills are alive, with the sound of music..." Contrary to how it might appear, I wasn’t whacked from a late-night visit to the city’s notorious red-light district, but rather was singing the praises of some righteously potent over-the-counter decongestants picked up at the airport pharmacy to combat the symptoms of a lingering cold.

Is SIDI’S VERTEBRA RACE A TITANIC leap forward in crash defense, or tech overkill? Yes, on both accounts. Foundation for the Race’s extensive support structure is the Italian bootmaker’s Vertebra System. Designed to enhance calf-to-heel protection without hindering on-bike movement, the patented articulating spine is double stitched to the boot’s upper.

CAN A BELL BE MADE OF HOT GAS? I HEAR IT RINGING-A V-Eight engine in a strong-running modified roadster. The powerful, straining reverberation seems to come from everywhere, and I see the car moving fast on the long course. Like many others here, this car is capable of more than 200 mph.

Downcourse, bright-orange mile markers appear as specks on the horizon. In succession, each dot grows in size to that of a roadside postal drop box as I rush past. With luck, I’ll be haulin’ the mail in excess of 200 mph through the final timed mile of the 5-mile course at Bonneville’s National Speed Week.

I own a 1983 Kawasaki KZ1 100 LTD, which is an excellent bike. I noticed re cently that the nut had come off one of the studs that hold the exhaust headers to the cylinder head, and when attempting to replace it, I discovered that the stud hole was stripped out.
