LIKE ALL SAD STORIES, THIS ONE HAS A happy beginning. The year is 1960 and crew-cut Dave Jorgensen, freshly matriculated from university, is sniffing around a small farming town in western Nebraska. He’s on the trail of a Manx Norton. Not just any Manx, mind you, but the very same works 500cc Single used by hotshoe Dick Klamfoth to win the Daytona 200 beach race in 1951.

ONE OF THE CENTRAL PROBLEMS IN THE design of large, powerful motorcycles is limited front-tire size. Even though a 286-pound 500cc GP bike or a 363pound Superbike may have 170-190 horsepower, they both use front tires no bigger than found on a 200-pound 250.

Being a Norton owner and enthusiast, I have watched the goings-on at Norton Motors International over the last year or so with some interest. As overly ambitious as the new company’s plans might have seemed, I kept track of their activities in the print publications and on their web site, and generally wished them all the best.

CRUISERS HAVE GOBS OF bottom-end torque. Sportbikes are strong on top. We want engines that are powerful everywhere. Honda's new Hyper VTEC variable valve-timing system is a step in that direction. The cruiser's torque fades as you rev it up because its valve timing is too short for best high-rpm cylinder filling, and its port sizes are small, so peak flow comes at low revs.

HONDA HAS MUCH experience building large-displacement dual-purpose bikes, but with the new XL1000V Varadero, the company has taken the concept to new heights. The Varadero (ostensibly named after a town in Cuba, though the word means “shipyard” in Spanish) is much more than an adventure tourer; it’s really closer to a grand tourer, thanks to the broad range of uses it serves.

ON ANY GIVEN DAY HERE AT THE CYCLE WORLD offices, we have a half-dozen or more brand-new motorcycles just waiting to be ridden. Thing is, over time the bikes in our garage have become super-specialized. Niche-oriented, if you will. In the streetbike category alone, you have your sportbikes, sport-tourers, luxo-tourers, touring cruisers, mega-cruisers, etc.

HERE COMES FUN. THIS book's subtitle, A Three Dimensional Tribute to an American Icon, says it all. Contained within five spreads are no less than 30 pop-up pictographs-one, an eagle clutching the H-D bar-and-shield, rising to a lofty 9 inches above the page.

CAN WE HAVE IT?" THOSE WORDS, SPOKEN BY EDITOR-IN-CHIEF DAVID EDWARDS, SET this story in motion. Having reverted to a GSX-R750-only Superbike program for 1999, Suzuki had put the exotic race version of its TL1000R V-Twin on the show circuit.

REMEMBER RUBIK's CUBE? JUST like the multi-colored brain teaser that drove many to their wits' end in the 1980s, the task of sorting out an untried Superbike is a puzzle of the tallest order. Doubly so when starting from scratch while battling for a championship-get the setup close at one racetrack, only to be re-immersed in a maze of options at the next venue.

IT WAS A TELEPHONE CALL TWO years in the making. Jerry Greer is on the other end, speaking from his Indian Engineering workshop. "Hey, Dave, got a second? Too damn bad if ya don't. Listen to this..." With that, he holds the receiver at arm's length and signals for his partner, John Bivens, to romp down on the kickstarter of a spartan, silver-and-black motorcycle.

When you're on an advisory board, you advise, so last year when the curators of the Guggenheim Museum asked what models I thought should be included in their upcoming exhibit, I didn't hesitate: "Any show titled `The Art of the Motorcycle' has to have customs-choppers, cafe-racers, bob-jobs..."

FOR FANS OF JAPANESE SPORT-TWINS, Suzuki's racy TL1000R is rhapsody on wheels. Some might even call it an apex-strafer supreme. Too bad, then, that the bike's sexy, upswept mufflers secrete the most woeful, watered-down exhaust note this side of a Yugo.

WHEN IT COMES TO PROTECTING your feet while riding, nothing beats a good set of calf-length motor cycle boots. When it comes to walking around off the bike, however, there are far more comfortable alternatives. Not to mention more stylish: How many times have you ridden to a social function only to have some dweeb ask, "Du-hude, like, what's the deal with those shoo-hoos?" If you're safety-conscious, but tired of committing fash ion faux pas, Alpinestars' Jet shoes are the answer to your dilemma.

HOW DIFFICULT CAN IT BE TO CREATE A quality enduro jacket? Very, apparently. Particularly when some come with promises of waterproof this or ventilated that, but don't function as advertised. In a recent photo shoot, however, we stumbled across the Answer Summit Jacket.

MENTION DAXAR, AND BMW ISN'T FAR OFF. For many motorcyclists, the two are endlessly tied. Any mention of the world's toughest off-road race brings to mind helicopter-perspective images of bulbous-tanked Boxers moving impossibly fast across the sands of the world's largest desert.

Paul Dean This past May, I purchased a 1998 KTM Adventure Rally. I am happy with the bike and have 2300 miles on it, but I'd like to make a change to the lighting system. The low beam has a nice, wide spread with good peripheral coverage, and the high beam has more of a pencil-type pattern with good long-range illumination but poor pe npheral coverage.
