LORDY, THE VIN-ET-FROMAGE SET MUST be reeling. Right there in New York City's acclaimed Guggenheim Museum, a sanctified space usually reserved for Picassos, Calders and Oldenburgs, are all these, these...motorcycles, everything from an 1868 Michaux-Perreaux steamer to the sultry new MV Agusta F4.

DEEP SUMMER HAS ARRIVED IN THE Midwest, and the want ads are finally in full bloom. They came out in the spring like lilacs or black locust blossoms, and, at this writing, fill nearly two full columns in the newspaper. I count 89 bikes for sale this week.

COMPARING THE FOUR-CYCLE RECIPROCating internal-combustion engine with other prime movers reveals where its weaknesses and compromises are, and how much we are paying for them. In a gas-turbine engine, for instance, each function-compression, combustion and expansion (power)-occurs in a different part of the engine, specialized for only that function.

When I opened your July issue and saw that you chose the Suzuki Katana 750 as Best 750cc Streetbike, my jaw hit the ground. Hello!? You chose a 10-year-old design as the Best 750 because it's cheap and has new plastic? Maybe you should flip through the Suzuki catalog a little farther until you hit the GSX-R750 with its new fuel injection.

OMAR'S STREET TRACKER CONVERSION KIT
$1350
Tantalized by visions of steel shoes and dirt ovals, but not ready for your own dirt-tracker? Then get the next-best thing, with Omar's Street Tracker Conversion Kit. For 1970s Yamaha 650 Twins, it comes with a fiberglass tank, seat/rear fender piece with side numberplates, half-mile pipes with silencers, and a flush-mount taillight. Flat-track bars, numberplate/ headlight box, front fender and graphics also are included. Purchase the components separately, or as a $1350 package.

QC OIL CHANGE KIT
$37
Changing motorcycle engine oil has always been a nasty job, but the QC Spill-Free Oil Change Kit may improve that. Designed for all motorcycle applications, the $37 system includes an adapter to replace the stock drainplug and a brass, spring-loaded valve and hose. Together, they can drain oil directly into any container. No muss, no fuss.

HAMMERHEAD GRAPHICS CUSTOM HELMET
$875
Considering that most motorcycles sport chrome these days, it's no surprise to find helmet painters dipping into the shiny sauce, too. Take, for example, this dazzlingly different helmet from Hammerhead Graphics. Combining plasti-chrome plating and paint, the company claims it can provide such lustrous graphics for most helmets. Turn-around is eight to 16 weeks, and prices start at $875.

SRC MUDSKINS
$99
Being a nine-time off-road champion just isn't enough for Scott Summers. In his spare time, the entrepreneurial racer invents nifty devices like Mudskins for his compafly SRC. Designed to conform to the front and rear fenders of most Japanese dirtbikes, the heavy duty lycra covers attach with velcro and lessen mud accumutation. Furthermore, they come in OEM colors and can be personalized with team logos. Suggested retail is $99 per three piece set.

BIG BIKE PARTS ULTRAGARD PREMIER CRUISER COVER
$111
Not all cruiser owners have the luxury of a garage, which begs the question: How do you protect your bike from the elements? Big Bike Parts suggests its Ultragard Premier Cruiser Cover. With zip-out pockets for windscreens and backrests, the elasticized polyester cover provides a custom fit. It incorporates a water-repellent undercoating, two tie-down straps and a storage pouch. Priced at $111, it comes in Black/Sand.
Omar Dirt Track Racing
RAD HEX HUBS
$199 to $299
Because off-road riders are easily distracted by shiny objects, RAD Manufacturing's Hex Hubs are exactly that. Designed to fit most late-model dirtbikes, the aluminum hubs are CNC-machined from billet and incorporate a non-stock spoke pattern. Furthermore, they can be anodized in any shade and are also available as a complete wheel kit with Buchanan's spokes and Excel rims. Price per hub ranges from $199 to $299.

BMW SYNTHETIC MOTOR OIL
$6.75
Those wacky Germans are at it again! Taking a marketing cue from their Japanese and American counterparts, the folks at BMW have come up with two synthetic lubricants for their motorcycles. The first is the Super Synthetic 15w50 Engine Oil, for all BMWs with singleplate dry clutches. The second is Super Synthetic 75w140 Gear Oil, with a detergent/dispersant system, for transmissions. The former costs $6.75 per quart, while the latter retails for $14.75.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON STREET STALKER KIT
$995 to $2995
Any of Harley-Davidson's three Street Stalker Kits can turn a latemodel Softail into a lean, mean, custom machine. First up is Stage I. which has a solo saddle, primered rear fender, dash panel and electrics. Next is Stage II, which includes the former's components as well as a front fender and arched headlight nacelle. Then, there's Stage III (pictured), which incorporates all of the above with a 5-gallon gas tank, front spoiler and burgundy bodywork. Prices range from $995 to $2995.

Matthew Miles
HOT ON THE HEELS OF last month's fuel-injected CBR600FI comes word that Honda will unleash an Open-class version of its homemarket Hornet 600. The latest entry in the budding unfairedsport category, the machine will take on Buell's new X-l Lightning, Kawasaki's ZRX 1100 and Suzuki's Bandit 1200S. With its Buck Rogers-esque headlight, faired-in radiator shroud, stepped seat and sexy, underseat exhaust, the bike re sembles Honda's FN-1 (Roundup, February, 1998), the Tokyo Show concept bike that designers labeled "a modern form injected with a pure, wild, naked sportiness."

WHITHER BRITTEN? BY the time of John Britten's death in September, 1995, his work had created a respected and influential place for itself in motorcycle design. In rapid-fire succession, the New Zealand native produced a successful racing V-Twin, carbon-fiber chassis technology, a workable non-telescopic fork and practical, safe, carbon-fiber wheelswork that any large manufacturer could be proud of.

FEW MOTORCYCLES HAVE ever been more aptly named than Moto Guzzi's V1O Centauro. Just one look at the muscular V-Twin sport-cruiser triggers references to the mythological halfman/half-horse. First launched two years ago as Mandello's answer to the Ducati Monster and Buell S1 Lightning, the Centauro is unfortunately a Clydesdale compared to those two quarter horses-a fact that the new Centauro Sport means to address.

IF IMITATION IS THE SINCEREST FORM OF flattery, then Ducati must be flush with pride. Since the birth of the World Superbike Championship a decade ago, no bike has enjoyed as much success as the fire-engine-red Italian V-Twins. It's safe to say that the racing achievements and resultant sales success of Ducati's 916 Superbike have given rise to the recent wave of two-cylinder sportbikes emanating from the Orient.

The press crackles with radical rumor: Grand Prix racing's premier class will switch from 500cc two-strokes to 1000cc four-strokes. Dennis Noyes, press officer for Dorna, the Spanish organization that manages GP racing, reports that Mr. Iio, competition director for Yamaha, is backing the idea 100 percent.

On my Sportster, the brake light stays on all the time. The brake-light switch is good, and I can't find a short anywhere. Also, the tach and speedo lights do not come on at all, and the neutral light won't come on unless I step on the brake! Any suggestions?
