THE FLAG MOVED, THE SOUND SWELLED hugely, and the field of 250s surged forward. Out of this mass came one machine, streaking out ahead, gaining a huge advantage in the first seconds of the race. How could one man get so sensational a start against a field of experienced professionals?

Just got the July issue of Cycle World. I found the “Sweet 16” comparison informative, but I feel at odds with some of your opinions. The Honda VTR1000 as best bike? Come on, it barely made headlines because of its lack of real performance and finicky choice of replacement rubber, and you guys pick it first?

If you find even the most radical stock helmet graphics passé, send your lid to T.C.’s Specialized Graphics. Whether you desire simple patterns or an intricate portrait, the company’s artists will reproduce nearly any design-or create their own-with top-quality urethane paint and 16 layers of clearcoat. Turnaround is approximately three weeks, and T.C.’s accommodates most full-and open-face helmets. Pricing starts at $200. DAINESE TST BOOTS & SS5 GLOVES
$230
The effect of things Italian can be intoxicating-just ask Gomez and Morticia Addams. For sportbike riders, it’s Dainese’s TST boots and SS5 gloves that inspire passion. Manufactured from top-grain cowhide, they come in five stylish color combinations designed to complement the latest repli-racers. The $230 roadrace-style boots incorporate locking toe skids, plastic heel armor, and ankle and shin padding. The matching gloves, $100, feature padded knuckles, kevlar palms, elasticized wrists and velcro closures. To quote Gomez, ah cara mia... 1938 Indian race-win poster
Sure, we've all heard of the Duhamels (Yvon and Miguel) and the Roberts (Kenny and KR Jr.), and before that the Emdes (Floyd and Don). But the first famous father-and-son motorcycle racers were "Iron Man" Ed Kretz and son Ed Kretz Jr. Now, sketch artist Lee Bivens has immortalized the duo in a 14 x 21-inch print. Unsigned copies go for $30; a limited run of 200 signed by Kretz Jr. costs $65 each. Also available: A two-color 31 x 22-inch reprint of a 1938 Indian race-win poster ($25) featuring the Iron Man fresh off his Laconia 200-mile victory. Kretz Race Prints, 7480 W. BIKINI FAIRING
$399
The more carbon-fiber, the better. At least, that seems to be the attitude held by many Ducati owners. Given that. European Cycle Specialties’ carbon-fiber Monster bikini fairing should come as no surprise. Available unpainted or in factory colors, the $399 fairing fits all M750s and M900s, and comes with your choice of clear or tinted windscreen.

ACERBIS PHS HANDLEBAR
$170
Rigging your dirtbike with a tapered handlebar shouldn’t require modifying or swapping existing parts. Acerbis’ Professional Handlebar System features universal mounts for mating the company’s extruded aluminum handlebar with stock triple-clamps. The kit comes complete with hardware and pad, and fits most late-model MXers. Suggested retail is $170 Acerbis USA, 13200 Gregg St., Poway, CA 92064; 800/205-8874

AEROSTICH ROADCRAFTER SUIT
$667
Leather riding gear isn’t for everyone, which is why Aerostich created the Roadcrafter. Constructed from cordura nylon and lined with Gore-Tex, the ventilated, one-piece suit slips easily over street clothes, thanks to its ankle-to-neck zipper system. It has nine external pockets, removable armor, adjustable waist, wrist and ankle tabs, and reflective Scotchlite trim. The $667 machine-washable outfit comes in chest sizes 34-50, with custom alterations and a variety of colors available. A two-piece, zip-together version is also offered. Aerostich, 8 South 18th Ave. W, Duluth, MN 55806; 800/222-1994

STOP MOTORCYCLE WATCHDOG PAGER
$150
Sometimes, an alarm isn’t enough. So STOP Anti-Theft Systems created the Watchdog pager. Designed for use with or without an alarm, the $150 system includes a compact, waterproof transmitter, which sends a 4-watt radio signal up to 1 mile away, plus a pocket-sized beeper. The latter will monitor up to three transmitter-equipped bikes. STOP Anti-Theft Systems, 1800 N. W. 167th Pl., #110, Beaverton, OR 97006; 503/690-4460

MUZZY RACING ACTION SCREENSAVER
$25
What do top roadracers Doug Chandler, Scott Russell and Mike Smith have in common with dragracing champ Ricky Gadsen? They all appear in the Team Muzzy Racing Action Screensaver, that’s what. IBM-and Mac-compatible, the programmable, $25 computer slide show features 15 high-resolution color images of the aforementioned riders at racetracks around the country. No flying toasters, here. It’s little secret that Yamaha has a new superbike under development-World Superbike racer Colin Edwards has said as much in recent interviews-but this photo provides the first real evidence. Spied while it was being scrutinized by Edwards and teammate Scott Russell during a recent European racetrack test, the new bike is presumably a 750cc Four, though no one at Yamaha will say for sure.

"Preview: Ducati 750!” screamed the cover blurb on this fat, 116-page issue. The twin-cylinder sportbike marked a departure for the small Italian company, which until then was renowned for its desmo Singles. “Ducati’s new 750cc V-Twin is as animal as anything you can buy these days,” wrote Senior Editor Dan Hunt.

"CRUISERS WERE EXTREMELY LACKING,” explains Matt Parks, head of the Polaris Victory project, about the rival machines he and his staff examined. “They went well in a straight line and that was about it. We kept asking ourselves, ‘Why can’t they do more?'" It was that question that led Parks and the other members of the Victory team to come up with the V92C, a machine that marches to a uniquely functional cruiser beat.

BMW, THAT STALWART of function, innovation and reliability, is broadening its model range to include-hold on to your spinning-propeller roundels, Beemephiles-cruisers. That’s right. Citing an ongoing cruiser sales swell in Europe and the U.S., the company has conjured up its own boulevard bruiser, the Boxer-engined R1200C. Spearheading this departure is Dr. Michael Genal, the aggressive, impassioned head of BMW’s motorcycle division.

BMW’s new R1200C certainly stands out, though its dramatic styling has yet to garner much applause from the international motorcycle press. Britain’s Bike magazine, for example, called the bike “a bizarre, opinion-dividing piece of strangeness.” Not to be outdone, CW suggested that Ming the Merciless had a hand in the 12’s styling and that a Buick Roadmaster was lurking somewhere in the family tree.

Twenty years later, a Ducati returns to Daytona

PHIL SCHILLING
THE SCHEME BEGAN on the telephone with a perfectly innocent question posed by a perfectly self-interested party-me: Why not take the California Hot Rod, winner of the 1977 AMA Superbike race, back to Daytona for a few ceremonial laps around the Speedway on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of that victory?

AS SOON AS I SEE OLD BLUE THERE at the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute, two days before I am scheduled to take some parade laps around the Daytona Speedway, I am pretty certain it is the same bike. When Glen Newton and I fire it up I know for sure, because 20 years ago it spoke to me with a voice that was utterly its own, and now, as it sits all shimmer and grumble on its ancient oily wooden stool, a tiny motorcycle really, a delicacy, it speaks with the same voice still, and I am moved to tears by the hearing of it.

Hunwick Hallam goes after Ducati

NO NEW MOTORCYCLE MARQUE HAS appeared on the world stage with as much panache, or so unexpectedly, as Australia’s Hunwick Hallam. It arrived on the scene after three years of top-secret development, dressed to kill, funded by Australia’s largest bike retailer, Rod Hunwick, and engineered by cutting-edge Superbike tuner Paul Hallam.

IT’S TIME TO TAKE FOUR-STROKE MOTOCROSSERS SERIOUSLY. CASE IN point: Yamaha is racing and winning with its works YZM Thumper this year, here and around the world. Other people are following the same train of thought. White Brothers and Kawasaki’s Team Green, for example, are dead-serious about Thumping around a motocross track.

DON’T LOOK NOW, BUT THUMPERS ARE WHERE IT' S at off-road. Yamaha’s got one and it’s as serious as a 90-foot triple-jump. It’s the YZ400F,4 available in dealerships this December. A full-blown 400cc four-stroke racebike may be shocking news, especially from a conservative Japanese company, but the hint was there in the hand-built form of Doug Henry’s factory YZM400.

SEATS OFTEN GET A BUM RAP. AFTER ALL, it’s virtually impossible to please everyone-or their backsides. Take off-road riders, for instance. Most motocrossers couldn’t care less if their seats are plank-hard or pillow-soft because they spend a lot of time standing on the footpegs.

YVON DUHAMEL RELAXES IN THE Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, summer sunshine and tells a story about tickling his son Miguel’s toes. Fairly ordinary behavior for a father trying to bring a smile to his child’s face, except that in this case it’s not a toddler he’s talking about, but a 23-year-old adult laid up in Daytona’s infield hospital after a violent motorcycle roadracing accident in 1990.

How good is Honda's GP effort? Well, in the 500cc class it doesn't seem to matter if the Honda in question is a V-Four or a V-Twin, factory or semi-privateer-it's still better than anything else. Besides winning the first six races, Honda has pulled off 1-2-3-4-5 finishes three times.

A friend of mine has just purchased a Suzuki TL1000S and is having some problems with the engine sputtering and spitting when idling and at low speeds. The symptoms clear up, however, when the bike gets up to speed. He has checked with the local Suzuki dealer, and they claim they don’t have any solutions to his problem.
