You DON'T KNOW ED BURKE, BUT YOU do know his bikes. You've most likely ridden one; may have even owned an example or two. At one time, Burke was the most important man in all of American motorcycling. That time was the late 1970s and early '80s. The bikes were Yamaha Specials, Maxims and Viragos, cruisers all, some of the best-selling bikes America has ever seen-maybe ever will see.

Peter Egan
I CAN’T REMEMBER WHEN I FIRST HEARD the term “cafe-racer,” but I think it was during my high school years in the early Sixties. My first reaction was to laugh, thinking it a term of derision, like “sunshine patriot” or “drugstore cowboy.” Just as a drugstore cowboy is one who dresses like a cowboy but hangs around in town and never gets near a horse or a cow, I figured a cafe-racer was a motorcycle rider who dressed like a roadracer and prepared his bike to look like a racebike, but hung around the cafe, drinking coffee and swapping lies rather than taking him-self and his bike to the racetrack for a true test of riding ability.

After scrutinizing your September cover and its nose-wheeling KTM Duke, I've concluded: a) The Duke must have some kind of secret, new anti-gravity device that hoists the rear wheel for easy parking in tight spaces; b) squeezing the clutch lever engages a reverse gear, i.e.

FAIRING BRAS
$45
Lockhart Phillips gives new meaning to the term Wonder Bra with its half-coverage Glasmask Fairing Bra. Designed to keep painted body parts looking new without covering the entire fairing, it is said to be particularly protective of the nose and the lower cowl area. Priced at $45, the Glasmask is available from motorcycle dealers, or direct from Lockhart Phillips, 151 Calle Iglesia, San Clemente, CA 92672; 800/221-7291.
LOCKHART PHILLIPS
SCOTT SUMMERS REPLICA
$487
In the market for a new off-road lid? Check out the Scott Summers Replica from Arai (P.O. Box 9485, Daytona, FL 32120; 904/253-5100). An adjustable top scoop forces air into the helmet at high speeds, and replaceable earcups provide a secure fit. What's more, it's color-coordinated Aerodyne peak minimizes lift, says the company. Available with a black or white base in XS-XXL, the helmet retails for $487 from motorcycle dealers.
LOCKHART PHILLIPS
MITYVAC COMPRESSION TESTER
$8
Mityvac's compression tester is designed to accurately measure how effectively your engine squeezes its fuel/air mixture. A rubber-covered quick-check adaptor and screw-in 14mm and 18mm fittings are included with the gauge—10mm and 12mm adaptors cost $8 each. Suggested retail for the tester is $38 from White Bros., 24845 Corbit Pl., Yorba Linda, CA 92687; 714/692-3404.
LOCKHART PHILLIPS
ACCUTRONIX FORWARD CONTROLS
$548
Accutronix's forward foot controls are machined from 6061-T6 aluminum, polished and assembled with stainless-steel hardware. They fit 1991-95 Harley-Davidson Sportsters and retail for $548. For more information, contact Drag Specialties (P.O. Box 9336, Minneapolis, MN 55440; 612/942-7890) or any authorized dealer.

OF THE JAPANESE SPORTBIKES built in the early 1980s, none had styling more radical than Suzuki's GS1000S and GS1100S Katanas. Paul Dean
A few months ago, my dad bought me an aftermarket headlamp for my 1989 Yamaha Radian 600. This new light has a 90/100-watt rating, almost double that of the stock, 55/60-watt bulb. He earlier had put one of these bulbs in his '93 Intruder and had no problems, and the shop he bought it from said that I wouldn't, either.
