BACK IN OLDEN TIMES, WHEN I WORKED full time at Cycle World, or upstairs at Road & Track, there was always a garage full of new test bikes just a few short steps away. Through either duty or pleading, I managed for 10 years—from 1980 to 1990—to ride, essentially, every motorcycle imported to the U.S., and a few that weren’t.

ALL OUR MOTORING ACTIVITIES OCCUR within the highly variable atmosphere. Our engines breathe the air, and are, directly or indirectly, cooled by it. Therefore, local changes in air temperature, barometric pressure, and moisture content can change how engines run.

Vanson’s X-Ray riding glove was designed to complement the company’s Bones jacket and Skeleton racing leathers. Manufactured from topgrain American cowhide, the X-Ray glove is handmade and individually numbered, says Vanson. The skeletal design is also produced by hand and top-stitched using individual pieces of leather. Vanson X-Ray gloves retail for $110 and are available in S-XL. MEZ2 LASER RADIAL
$127
In developing its new MEZ2 Laser radial front tire, Metzeler retained the arrow-shaped groove of its ME33, but redesigned the center and shoulder areas. A circumferential zigzag groove with a stepped cross section was also added to improve water expulsion, says Metzeler (410 Eagleview Blvd., Suite 106, Exton, PA 19341; 610/458-9662). The MEZ2’s tread compound is similar to that of Metzeler’s Comp K and was designed to provide low-temperature and wetweather grip without affecting mileage. Four sizes are available, and retail prices start at $127. For more information, contact Metzeler or your motorcycle dealer.

Box 336, Edmonds, WA 98020; 800/688-6439) has a 4-inch steel hoop that mounts to the back of your motorcycle via custom-made L-brackets ($77 per set), says HSI. A taller, 13-inch Pack Rack ($40) is also available and can be interchanged with the Sport Rack and used in conjunction with the company’s 30-1 iter and 44-liter Aero packs. Popular fitments include Honda’s VFR750F and CBR900RR, Suzuki’s RF600 and RF900, and Yamaha’s 535 Virago and Seca II.

Alisyn Pro21 Synthetic Chain
Alisyn Pro21 Synthetic Chain Lubricant was designed to defeat the leading causes of chain wear; dirt and corrosion. Pro21’s synthetic formula will not attract dust or dirt like petroleum or wax-based compounds, claims the manufacturer, and its antirust additive will not evaporate quickly, providing long-lasting lubricatior and protection. Safe for use with Oring chains, Pro21’s non-drip, no-run formula is also said to reduce flingoff. Alisyn Pro21 Synthetic Chain Lubrication is available in 9-ounce aerosol cans for $8 from motorcycle dealers or direct from the Alisyn Division of Aerospace Lubricants, Inc. (1505 Delashmut Ave., Columbus, OH 43212; 800/441-9160).

YAMAHA'S LONG-AWAITed twin-cylinder sportbike, the TXR850, will appear in April, a couple of months after the debut of a revised YZF600 and YZF750, according to Japanese sources. A sporting Twin has been expected from Yamaha since its 849cc engine appeared in the TDM850, an unusually styled machine that did not sell well.

Italian sources say Bimota will use BMW's four-cylinder K-series engine as the basis for a sport-tourer, which could debut as early as this summer. Bimota refuses to confirm or discuss the project, but a source says the bike’s styling is at least as exotic as that of the company’s Mantra (see Cycle World, January), as it was apparently drawn by Sacha Lakic, the Frenchman who styled Bimota’s newest sensation.

"THIS IS OUR STANDARD model," said BMW when handing over the keys to its new R1100R. If you figure that the 1100R is a shade less specialized than the preceding 1100RS and 1100GS, and if you put the company’s Triples and Fours on one end of the lineup and the upcoming F650 Single at the other, and if you assume that standard means not going in any specialized direction, then, yes, the 1100R is kind of in the middle of the group.

HUNGRY FOR POWER, COMFORT, STYLE AND versatility at a reasonable price? Here's a recipe that ought to satisfy your appetite: Retune one Kawasaki ZX-11 engine for a bit less of a top-end rush and a tad more midrange grunt; mount it in a double-cradle steel frame that's rigid and robust; fit it with modern suspension absent of costly adjusting devices; design bodywork that provides good weather-protection yet allows a clear view of the engine; add a comfortable, reasonable riding position; mix well and serve to the bomber-jacket-and-jeans crowd, a public that Kawasaki hopes is eager for a rapid, non-intimidating, all-around sport motorcycle that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

HONDA WILL ENTER the 1995 Grenada-Dakar race with a bike powered by a novel 402cc two stroke Single, whose operation requires spark ignition only above 40 percent throttle. The rest of the time, the EXP-2 operates on a kind of chemical self-ignition that Honda is calling "AR-Combustion."

FOR ALONG TIME, I'D HAVE GIVEN AN ARM AND A leg to ride a factory Paris-Dakar rallybike. When the opportunity did present itself following the Nevada Rally, the bikes were two of the best: Yamaha's XTZ850 Super Ténéré and its single-cylinder brother, the XTZ660.

THERE'S NO MISTAKING THOSE FACES. They're race faces, every one of them. Even through the helmet and goggles, as the riders sit waiting for their gates to fall, there’s that hardness around the eyes, the thousand-yard stare, the body language that bespeaks the concentration and commitment of the hard-core motocross racer.

Australian Troy Corser, who won the 1994 AMA Superbike Championship and promptly announced plans to move on to World Superbike Ducatis for 1995, will have some familiar paddock-mates when he arrives in Europe. Yamaha sources confirm that Colin Edwards II, who seemed to find his form toward the end of last year's AMA Superbike season, will run in World Superbikes on a Yamaha factory team that will field YZF750SPs.

I have a 1991 Suzuki DR350S that absolutely refuses to start when the engine is hot. When it's cold, two or three kicks (with choke, of course) are enough to get it running. And once it fires up, it runs perfectly and will idle indefinitely. But if I shut it off and then try to restart it right away, it just won't come to life.
