BACK WHEN IT WAS FIRST PROPOSED some 15 years ago, it seemed an absurd concept: motocross racing in a football stadium, of all places. But Mike Goodwin, the rock-concert promoter who conceived this idea of “indoor” motocross, never stopped believing in its huge potential for success, and pursued that dream with the tenacity of a runaway tank.

MOTORCYCLISTS ARE RARELY ENTItled to gloat. This is one of those times. You can thank your jackets. Fashion has rediscovered leather. Now. fashion being what it is (fickle, mainly), we know this won't last; we know that this season's haute couture will be next year’s declasse.

Some years ago, I used to go to Grand Prix motorcycle races, usually as a member of the pit crew with my old friends who raced. Now, having moved to Hong Kong from Canada a year and a half ago, I was able to attend the Macau Grand Prix races. All the sights and sounds and smells came to me again as if it were only yesterday that I last sensed them.

Kiwi K20 helmet
$129.95
Switzerland had the tools and Italy had the talent. Kiwi, a Swiss helmet manufacturer, employed Bertone, an Italian design studio, to pen the shape for Kiwi's new K-20. The result, a carbon-composite-shell helmet, meets DOT standards, and features vents in the top and sides, as well as for the faceshield. Available in sizes XS-XL, the K-20 comes in black, burgundy or silver for $129.95, and in black/gray, red/gray and pearl/gray for $149.95. To find out more about this mixed marriage, contact Dyna-Tour Corp., 1944 N. Narragansett, Chicago, IL 60639; (312) 637-5049.
Dyna-Tour Corp.
tank bibs
$27.95
Taking a cue from culinary couture, Targa offers its tank bibs for motorcycles. Instead of guarding your tank from barbeque or bernaise sauces, though, Targa's foam-padded, flannel-backed, black-vinyl bibs are designed to protect it from jacket zippers, snaps and buckles. Available for most current sport bikes, the bib retails for $27.95 from your dealer, or from Targa Accessories Inc., 10 McLaren, Suite B, Irvine, CA 92714;(714)472-1022.
Dyna-Tour Corp.
spark arrestor
$39.95
How would you like to deal with a large, angry mammal in a ranger's hat? That could be the case if you go riding in Smokey the Bear's woods without a spark arrestor. Instead, play it safe and consider Cobra Engineering's aluminum-bodied Sparky. Available to fit all 1986-87 motocross bikes, the Sparky clamps onto the stock silencer, and Cobra claims it's U.S. Forestry-legal and that it causes no power-loss. Suggested retail price is $39.95, and you can find out more from Cobra Engineering, 4760 E. Bryson St., Ana heim, CA 92807;(714)779-7798.
Dyna-Tour Corp.
Kal-Gard 30/30
$4.78
The 30-30 rifle cartridge has been a popular deer-hunting round for more than 50 years. Kal-Gard's 30/30 multi-purpose lubricant, on the other hand, probably won't put any meat on the table, but it will loosen grease, displace moisture and inhibit rust. Plus, it's harmless to most paint, plastics and rubber, some thing you can't say about a 30-30 round. Suggested retail price is $4.78 for a 17-ounce can, and it's available at your motorcycle dealer. For more information, contact Kal-Gard, 16616 Schoenborn St., Sepulveda, CA 91343.
Dyna-Tour Corp.
SBS brake pads
$14
Most riders think a hot Danish is something served with coffee. Not in this case, though. The Danish in question are disc brake pads from SBS of Denmark, and they come in different compounds for front and rear brakes. SBS pads are available for most motorcycles, with prices starting at $14 a pair. To find out more, contact Performance Machine Inc., P.O. Box 927, Paramount, CA 90723;(213)634-6532.
Dyna-Tour Corp.
Nelson-Rigg Enforcer glove
$39.95
Is the temperature going to be in the 70s or in the 30s? Well, in all the excitement, you might have forgotten the weather report. But seeing as how these leather Enforcer gloves from Nelson-Rigg are lined with 3M Thinsulate, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do you want to be cold ... or warm? The gloves are available in black only, in sizes SXL, with a retail price of $39.95, from motorcycle dealers. For more information, contact Nelson-Rigg USA Inc., 5082 Bolsa Ave., Unit 109, Huntington Beach, CA 92649:(714)891-8111.

Kawasaki: Will half as many cylinders bring twice the market-share?
[no value]
[no value]
Kengo Yagawa
Most people don’t know it, but over 80 percent of Kawasaki’s total motorcycle production—including the bikes built in the Lincoln, Nebraska, plant—is aimed at markets outside of Japan. Two things make that figure interesting: One is that except for Japan, nearly every motorcycle market around the world is declining; the other is that Kawasaki has only a two-percent share of the Japanese domestic market.

Someone has quickly built the bike that Honda didn’t—a V-Four rival to the GSX-R750 Suzuki and the new Deltabox-framed FZR750 Yamaha. As odd as it might might seem to riders in the U.S., Honda’s VF- and VFR-series machines have not enjoyed the success they’ve had in the States.

MOTORCYCLES DON'T EXACTLY QUALify as objets d'art, but don't try to tell that to their owners. Indeed, many riders guard their steed's finish jealously, and react to scratches, nicks and chips with the same horror art lovers felt when Laszlo Toth took a hammer to Michelangelo’s Pieta.

IN ITS DAY, YAMAHA’S DTI WAS CALLED LOTS OF NAMES, most of which were well-earned. But perhaps the DTl’s least-deserved name was “Enduro.” Even though the DT1 was not much of a true enduro bike, that was the tough-guy image Yamaha wanted to give the dual-purpose machine when it was introduced.

PAUL DEAN
WHEN YOU HEAR TALES OF international espionage, the-sky's-the-limit bidding and high-level politicking, you don’t expect them to be about anything so mundane as vintage motorcycles. But those sorts of machinations are exactly what transpired during Gruppo Agusta’s recent sale of its historic MV racebike collection.

Would you please do me the favor of explaining the meaning behind the terms preload, rebound, damping and any other such word having to do with the suspension of my motorcycle? And how do they all work together? I own a 1986 VF500F Interceptor, and in almost every road test done on my bike, the attitude toward the suspension seems to be the same: The bike is undersprung and underdamped.
