ALLAN GIRDLER
Due to the nature of our respective machines, I was aware of the motocross kid long before he was aware of me. I was poking along a one-track trail when out of the brush came that distinctive “Rriiinng, dit-dit-dit” and I thought Aha, the cry of the two-stroke is loose on the land!

Your test on the Moto Guzzi 1000 SP told a lot but not all. Moto Guzzi loyalists exists because of the superb handling stability brought about by the machine’s gyroscopic action stemming from a flywheel and crankshaft rotating inline with the bike’s chassis.

Malcolm Smith ISDE Enduro Pro jacket
$159.95
Malcolm’s newest jacket is made of waterproof Gor-Tex nylon material. Even the seams are sealed to keep out water and wind. The jacket is designed and cut to fit a rider on a bike, not standing erect. The long sleeves are already in a curved riding position. Cuffs and collar are made of closed-cell neoprene (wet suit material) and fitted with Velcro closures. The front features a large nylon zipper, a triple layer Gor-Tex fold over the zipper and a Velcro strip closure. Wind and rain won’t get to the rider when this jacket is worn. The four pockets feature waterproof flaps and Velcro closures. There’s a nylon zipper across the shoulders (under a large flap so wind and water doesn’t get in) and the jacket is line with perforated nylon jersey material. A one year guarantee covers waterproofing and workmanship. They are available in red/blue or solid blue. Sizes are small, medium, large and extra large. Price is $159.95 from dealers or Malcolm Smith, 7563 Indiana Ave., Riverside, Calif. phone (714) 687-1300.

Horsepower is an interesting concept. Everybody knows what power is; yet types of power and methods for achieving it vary widely. An engineer can design an engine for maximum horsepower, wringing out the last bhp with fantastic engine speeds just this side of destruction.

Honda’s XR line is a success story against the odds. When most factories figured the sun had set on the day of the four-stroke Single dirt bike, Honda introduced the XR line, a full range of 500, 250, 185 and 80cc models. They had modern chassis, improved since those first XRs with single rear shocks.

THE TWO-STROKE ENGINE

[no value]
[no value]
Examined in theory and on the work-bench, the two-stroke engine looks infernally simple. There are so few moving parts; a single-cylinder engine will have a piston, a connecting rod and a crankshaft, and that’s it. Yet from this terribly basic assembly comes power that virtually rules the racing world.

Among the world’s pressing problems, the tinkling sounds that come from an engine under load are not the foremost. World hunger, nuclear war and maybe what diet Liz is using are all more important. But some motorcycles still make those irritating pinging noises whenever the throttle is whacked open at low to medium engine speeds.

Windshields are wonderful things to keep wind and rain and bugs off the front of motorcyclists. Ducking behind a windshield is fine when the weather is nasty, and it’s not a problem when the weather is fine, but it can be nice to see over a windshield, too.

When Suzuki introduced the GR650 Twin for the 1983 model year, everybody inside the company and out knew the model was something of a gamble. As a class, the 650 Twin had all but disappeared, leaving an echo of old-fashioned to the engine’s displacement.

Anatomy of a Top Fuel Spectacle

Greg Guarinello
Elmer Trett and his Top Fuel Kawasaki had only traveled 100 feet on the Indianapolis Raceway Park dragstrip before the 14-inch slick lit up in a puff of smoke. The 67,000 people packed into the stands watched as Trett notched back the throttle, felt the tire regain traction, and rolled the power back on.

Rainsuits are like any other form of insurance, in that when you aren't in need they’re a terrible bother and overpriced, and when you are in need there’s no such thing as too much coverage. What we see here, with Slipstreamer’s Thunderwear (aside maybe from a name too big for its britches, ho ho) is what a good insurance agent will do; you’ll never notice it most of the time, but when you look for help, there it is, ready and able.

Kawasaki Motors Corp. has expanded its 1984 motocross team, adding Goat Breker. No surprise is that Jeff Ward will be riding 125 Nationals and Supercrosses, with Billy Liles riding 250 Nationals and Supercrosses. But Kent Howerton has switched from the 500cc class to the 250cc National class with the avowed intention of beating Honda’s Bob “Hurricane” Hannah.

The power it takes to spin an engine depends not so much on the displacement of the engine, as on the displacement of the cylinders. After all, only one cylinder is being compressed at any instant. This means the electric starting system of big Singles and Twins must be stronger than the starting system of big multis.

I have read the frequent complaints about, and suggested fixes for, Honda cold starting problems in your Service column. The real solution to this problem is simple, and takes only a few minutes to accomplish. Look at your Honda’s carb and observe whether or not it has a butterfly choke system.
